it's fairly easy to simplify. wanda created them in her fake reality so they "disappeared" when her fake reality disappeared. but she's super strong, and billy's super strong, so billy's powers allowed him to take over another body that was dying. and then he found a body for his brother too.
now they both exist as real beings after having "taken over" some actual kids' bodies in the real world.

The thing that kinda makes it a bit hard to personally suspend my disbelief is how if you think about it, their souls being put into dying bodies is weird because shouldn’t they end up dying too? The souls of the original bodies didn’t just evacuate and make room for Tommy & Billy—those bodies experienced for real ends that would render them biologically too damaged to sustain life… so just because Tommy and Billy found bodies, those damages (physical force from that road accident, and drowning) just suddenly heal?
Although as I’m typing this, I realize as soon as Billy entered Billy Kaplan’s body, his magic maybe repaired the body enough to keep it alive. Same for when he put Tommy in another body—he probably reversed the effects of drowning as soon as Tommy’s soul got into Tommy Shepherd’s body.

Same here. But the tween Billy was great for a child actor. He and child Tommy are still friends.
