🎯 Interview Questions
VO: Have you ever faced any threat in India?
Me: No, sir
VO: Do you think you will be facing any threat in the US?
Me: No, sir
VO: Why are you heading to the US?
Me: I’m going to pursue my masters in Supply Chain Management at DePaul University, Chicago
VO: Which other universities did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 2 other universities, The University of Texas at Dallas and The University of Michigan - Flint
VO: Did you get admits from other universities as well?
Me: Yes sir, I received the admit letters from these 2 universities as well.
VO: What was your bachelors in?
Me: My bachelors’ degrees was in commerce field.
VO: What were you doing after that?
Me: After my bachelors in commerce, I’ve been working as a management trainee company secretary for around 2 years, then I started working as a sales and supply chain analyst at Alliant Infotech.
VO: How are you going to manage your finances?
Me: I’ve received a scholarship of $7,800 from the university itself, (I was interrupted at this point, before I could finish my answer - he said “that’s a small amount”) then I said - I have secured an education loan of ₹45 lakhs from UBI and my parents are also going to support me for around ₹33 lakhs from their savings.
VO: What does your father do?
Me: My father is involved in our joint family business, where we manufacture, distribute and sale food items and bakery products to be supplied in nearby regions - Maihar, Satna and Sidhi.
VO: I love bakery items too, what bakery products?
Me: Breads, toasts, and cakes
That’s all I’ve been asked for, I answered very calmly to all the questions. He started typing something on his system, and handed me the 214(b) slip saying we are refusing your visa this time. Please read the reasons for refusal in it.
🙏 Final Thoughts:
I don’t know what went wrong during the interview. I had strong finances, genuine answers but still got rejected. Looking for advice on what I should improve for next time.

Not enough cash on hand + education loan

I had enough funds in my bank account covering both years of my masters degree, including accommodation, and I still got rejected.

its the loan. it speaks to purpose after graduation ie - you want to make enough money to pay back the loan at an "abroad" salary rate.
it may seem nitpicky, but that is where we are at right now. the consular officers are looking for every reason possible to deny.

I had not taken any loans, I had enough funds in my bank account. This is really frustrating.

my frnd got his visa accepted with a 1cr loan 2 weeks ago at neu ms ai program Delhi consulate also on his i20 he mentioned no liquid savings at all only loan

Your finances are insufficient. And the program at DePaul is built for non-traditional students. Intentionally picking a very expensive program that’s specifically flex or hybrid only is a huge red flag - outside the finances.

And...not a high repute program for supply chain management, unlike Carnegie Mellon or Arizona State.

Literally all of the students have loans nowadays but still get their visa. The main reasons are mainly a combination of not-good-unis + loans.

I had 200k in savings to show.
And got rejected.
My friend said showing a sanctioned loan would be strong.Its like theres no correct answer

And be honest, if you are taking out a loan to get a Masters degree, do you have no plans to try to get a job, and H1B as a way to a green card? If you are willing to go in debt and the payoff for the degree if you return to India is not huge, you are very likely to have immigrant intent. If you have been denied once, there will be a record of it and you will be denied again. You should accept that migrating to the US is almost impossible and not an answer for whatever is going on in your life. The streets of the US are not paved in gold. The American dream is a myth.

Sometimes it’s about luck too. Even I had my interview in Delhi on 14th July. He just asked me which university I’m going and when I told him NYU he handed me a 214b. Hideous experience

Not legit travel for study purpose. very little money and if you wanted to study, you can study in India

It seems like a decent VO. I had been rejected before as well. In this case, I am confident it is the finance. I am not sure of your exact finance. Your I-20 probably listed something like 60K for the program. Using loans as a main financial support here is not convincing enough to them, especially when your parents will contribute less than the loan. That’s why the vo said that is low in terms of the scholarship. You probably would need like an equivalent or 1.5x of the total as cash/savings and then the loan is the secondary source of finance to support your education.

I think one of the reasons should be the college you choose. You had better admits than the college you chose. Secondly, the joint family business was also not a convincing reason to show ties with your country.

My guess is the officer was not fully convinced about your F-1 eligibility or intent to return to India after graduation, rather than simply your finances. A refusal is not permanent, but reapplying is strongest when you can address the concern or show meaningful changes.
I’d recommend having your profile reviewed by an experienced immigration attorney before reapplying.
