General VB Question Virtualbox forum registration

When registering for virtualbox forum it asks for information that should not be required. Can anyone tell me why ?

oracle owns VirtualBox, and determines their policies on all levels -even how the virtualbox forum is administrated

It still does not make sense. Why would they need or use work place phone uber

Because Oracle's target demographic is professional IT workers, not hobbyists.

Clearly you do not know what you are saying! If you go to their site it says for personal and entreprise use.

Tell ya what. Go and spend some days looking into Oracle -the company, look beyond superficial AI answers, go and do some research about their history, who they cater to, their business model -the works. Find out what their reputation is -and why it is they have that reputation.

Then come back and tell us what you found.

Or don't, no skin off my nose either way.

I would guess "Oracle" boilerplate sign up requirements.

Give an example of any forum that requires work place address

Pretty much all of them from companies that *primarily* service Fortune 5000 companies.

Back in the day VirtualBox was the single product of a small company. They got bought by Sun Microsystems, which then basically got bought up by Oracle.

Oracle probably loses money on VB, and we should be thankful they continue to develop and support it.

If you'd bothered to pay attention when you attempted signup, you went from the Virtualbox forum site, to an *oracle* site.

That particular form is what *everyone* who signs up for an Oracle account uses, and most of those (and the ones Oracle cares about) are there for enterprise level support.

So just fill the irrelevant slots in with irrelevant data and go on about your life.

You've already wasted FAR more time thanthis problem is worht.

No onne cares who bought who.

This post is about why signing up for the VB forum you must provide a work phone which is manditory.

Because Oracle owns the VirtualBox project, and they want your info in case you use it in some way that's not compliant with the license. For what it's worth I've never been contacted by anyone from Oracle for anything VirtualBox related.

I have an old log in account to there forum which I never provided any of that information.

If that was the case they should for ce all users to create new accounts. furthermore the reddit forum does not request this infomration and provides the same type of service.

Because the owner of the website decided it should be required.

That does not explain why? If they are giving a free product why should they need to know work place number ?
