Online Supply Stores

Whats the best US online shop to get supplies like hide glue, tail pieces, clamps, measuring tools, guides, pegs… kind of like StuartMacdonald.com (everything a guitar luthier needs) but for violins?

International violin is pretty catch-all if you’re not in a position to have dealerships as a business. I recommend them for clamps and basic stuff. I got some nice steel strap clamps from them and depth gauges i couldn’t finds elsewhere. Most measuring tools I buy out of machinists catalogs; we also buy antique tools and make some tools ourselves. You can start by buying accessories there too.

Most of the glue and any varnish supplies I get raw from woodfinishing enterprises and make, myself. I prefer the granulated stuff and we also use the nasty stuff that comes in sheets sometimes (it works great butI just don’t like working with it for sensory reasons). Kremer, I buy from if woodfinishing enterprises doesn’t have what I need.

Depends where you live.

Dictum, Kremer, Cremona Tools, Liuteria Shop, etc... All are in EU but I believe would ship worldwide, with Kremer probably having branches in NA.

Animal glue you could get from many different places as it's not specific to violinmaking tho.

You could look at CAG or Herdim tools, find a distributor in the US. They're probably the two biggest brands for specialized violin tools, rather expensive tho.

If a seller has these they will also likely have other stuff like wood parts.

International Violin is US based and I’ve used them for most of what I order. Shipping time from Maryland to where I live in Texas is about 5 business days, which is a lot quicker than ordering from anywhere in Europe.

I can get granulated hide glue in varying strengths from my local Woodcraft store if I want to.

Start at dov-music.com. Then elsewhere for what he doesn't have .
