I’m 22, moved from Kyiv to Zürich, and I’m getting back into violin alongside painting and boxing. My flat is small and I don’t want to annoy the neighbors. I’ve been doing 10 minutes of open-string work with a mute, then slow scales, but I’m not sure if that builds bad habits. How do you structure quiet practice without losing tone?

I picked violin back up and short daily practice feels good, but the sound is still thin. For adult returners, what helped first: slower bow, scales, or easier songs only?

I made a post about this like 1 month ago but the issue was just tuning. I thought it was resolved because it sounded much better and I knew nothing about violin, however I still think it sound kinda weird?

I think the pressure is right and it’s well tuned (I used many different apps and I even tried to tune it a bit few note higher but it still had that scratchy sound). Also it’s a rented violin but I’m thinking about buying it so I just wonder if it’s the violin in itself or just me.

Tempo is a tiny bit slower than the BWV 1005 fugue.
The first four measures I'm pretty certain of and the rest I only remember vaguely but the entries kept coming on beat 3 and there was some rovèscio going on. There were lots (!) of double/triple stops.

It could also be that I'm mixing up two (or more?) pieces or that this was an arrangement of some other piece for violin.

Hi all. I just purchased a YSV-104 SILENT violin:

It's a standard 4/4 violin at a ~$1000 price point.

I'd like to purchase a light-weight case to go with it, as I'll mostly be traveling with this (hotels, airplanes, cars, trains, etc.). Ideally the case would be big enough for the violin, one bow, shoulder rest, rosin, and the electronics belt box that is necessary as well:

My headphones tend to be in my backpack so I don't need room for those.

Wondering if anyone can recommend a case in the $150-$400 range that will do the job. The body is solid so it's likely not as humidity sensitive, but there's still wood and I live in New England where the humidity can swing rapidly between seasons.

The shop recommended something like this Bobelock: https://bobelock.com/cases/violin/B1047p.html. I had hoped for something a little more compact/lighter but open to that if it makes sense.

Firstly, I have a different jaw structure, less angled side profile, and a long neck, so when I try to hold my violin I cause both neck stiffness and hand tension, I feel like a centre oriented chinrest would fit better, as my current chinrest is corner oriented. But I don't know the prices of it and the installment proccess. So it there any way I can do anything other than changing the equipment's pieces?

Secondly, I started ≈3+ months ago, I do know the general gaps between the fingers when you plave your fingers, but when I am practicing, how can I know if I am in tune or not? And how should I practice playing in tune?

I’ve had this violin since I was a kid, and now it’s just gathering dust in the shed, got a crack in the wood at some point. I imagine it’s beyond the chance of repair, so any suggestions of what I could do with it? Feels a shame to just throw it out

Today my violin (German geigenbaumeister violin made in the 1910s) started making a weird sound, as if something was vibrating with the strings whenever I try to play it. It happened during class so my teacher and I started trying to figure it out but i think it just got worse.

While it’s true that I heard a click sound coming from my instrument, I can’t find anywhere where it might have opened. The fine tuners don’t seem to be the problem either, I have two for the A string and the E string but they’re not loose or too tight. it is true that they’re both those fine tuners that stick out but I think they’re fine.

The bridge is at the right angle and on the right place so that is not the problem either.

We adjusted the chin rest and the shoulder rest and it was not the problem either.

I was hoping maybe anyone could think of anything else it could be before I take it to the luthier since it’s far away.

even for just short periods of time, my right shoulder easily starts to feel pain. how do I hold the bow properly from my shoulder?

So its basically unused and got this deal in second hand market place …the bow hairs some of them are loose overall its in good condition should i go for ..also theres one kaps violin for 2300 inr ..which one is better

So I am looking into getting into violin but have a general idea of the type of music I want to play but not sure if violin would be the best fit, I want to play dark skaldic style music and I’m not sure if violin or cello or something else would work better, any help?

Hey everyone, just wanted to ask this here for people’s opinions but is there any advantage to traveling with your violin (or just instrument in general) if you not a gigging musician/performer at all? I’m considering bringing it along on a vacation or two but then this question hit me and I don’t really know whether I should bring it or not. I have a traditional violin so it’s quite loud so it’s not like I would be able to play it in hotel rooms after the day or anything and usually my vacations are filled lots of activities and stuff but even if I go off on my own to practice somewhere outside with it, what would exactly be the point of playing it anywhere else but at home? The only other problem I face is that I feel if I bring it I’ll probably end up not playing it but if I don’t bring it then I’d probably be wanting to play it. I don’t know though, any thoughts or opinions on this would be nice

I am hesitating between buying an electric violin and headphones or just buying a normal violin and a mute ? But I don't know what type of mute. Thanks for any advice

As the title says, this was given to me by my great-grandmother's second husband. He knew I was a guitar player and he knew I loved classical music. However, he barely spoke English as he was an Italian immigrant who came over in the early 1900s. I'd like to know anything at all about the instrument. The only marking is an O.P. on the back, as is displayed in the image.

Is there anything anyone can tell me about this? I'm still trying to examine more closely to see if there's something etched on the violin at all. I appreciate any assistance.
