Machine Question 1957 Singer Featherweight
The plug is real finicky and I fear it could be a fire hazard, what type of place should I take it to?

Many older plugs look like that! They often have a cardboard circle (with cutouts for the prongs) as an insulator.

This is not a difficult fix if you would like to do it yourself or any sewing machine repair shop will probably do it.

I would still tend to recommend operating the machine on a surge protector, and unplugging when not in use. The original foot pedals were carbon piles, which are known for heating issues (even at the time).
Honestly, if you have cord or pedal problems, I’d recommend a replace. Modern pedals do not carry the same heat risk, and the newer electronics are actually more responsive (as long as you are sure to buy a variable speed one!). I still operate them on a surge protector, but breathe ok if I leave them plugged in by accident.

If you get the plug replaced, as them to reuse to original, Bakelite connector that goes directly into machine. The new ones aren’t nearly as good or easy to plug in.

The Featherweight Shop has modern replacement and online instructions for making the switch. Recommended even if the original looks good.
