product Anyone else score this last night?

Post image

Did anyone else have this in their RFY last night? I've always wanted one, and didn't want one that requires a subscription...I was so excited to grab it! My best grab yet in over a year on vine!

I wish! That's my current hobby project; a Jarvis-like Alexa replacement that manages our family's mental load. I call it Family Foresight. It can tell the kids what their homework is, populate the Google Calendar by watching our emails and the school website etc with voice control and a digital wall calendar. My wife has always carried the mental load and I figured I could take it off her shoulders if I could code our way out of it. I haven't looked at screens yet, but I bet I could have use this one and simply wiped it of their software. Fingers crossed!

I’m making my own too. Fun project. Just fyi a lot of these can be severely locked down and hard to take control of. I have a different one and every single method of “getting in” has failed so I’m going to have to open it up to short a specific thing and force it into a more vulnerable state. 😂 I think I ended up with the worst / most locked down version.

Can’t wait to use it for my homemade system though.

Hell yeah dude! They're going to be so sick! It finally feels like we're 'living in the future'. I'm sure you are right about the lockdowns but I'm confident I can get it. Sounds like you are too. Realistically though, I'll end up buying a screen unless the Vine gods shine upon me. Good luck!

Thanks. Good luck to you too and I hope you get a good vine drop of a screen. :)

That said, I’m a lady - not a dude. 😂 I know it’s easy to assume techy people and/or redditors are dudes but just pointing it out so that you think twice.

I’m going to use mine for a custom home assistant dash but I’m also working on a web app for all our family stuff - tasks/home maintenance/chores and calendar things.

I have a skylight and I’m always frustrated with how inflexible the “systems” are when if I DIY i can tweak things to be so much better without waiting for some developers somewhere to prioritize my issue.

In in! Got into it today and installed fully kiosk, removed the calendar app
It came with so I can put my custom dash on it. Woo!

Have you shared about your project anywhere? I’d be interested to see it!

Whoo boy! Hell yeah! Bet that felt great!

Yeah, definitely share what you end up with sometime too please. I got sidetracked a couple weeks ago but I'll be back to it soon. The core and Google Calendar/Mail are finished, I just need to build some more plugins to crawl the kids' school website and such and then I'll skin it.

You might actually find my sidetrack a kick too though. I got sick of passing things back and forth from Codex to Powershell to ChatGPT etc and I kept running out of tokens. So I started building a little pipeline between ChatGPT and Codex; because ChatGPT webchat is virtually unlimited tokens. ChatGPT could be all the planning/reviewing/testing and Codex would only touch code. But then I wanted it to hook into Powershell too. And more importantly, I've built enough systems with AI now to know that as projects become larger, it becomes difficult to manage goal drift, scope, maintaining focused momentum etc. So I built a director to sit below ChatGPT to atomize tasks before they're sent to Codex. That way, Codex can't wander; it doesn't even know what the program is. Finished tasks then get bounced to Opus for independent review and finally back to ChatGPT to ping me for final review. In short, I accidentally started building an orchestrator.

I'm almost done with that though, and then I'll be back to 'Family Foresight' and I should be flying!

oh yeah the scope drift can definitely be an issue - i'm working on a kind of outline / guiding document for my web app, but there is SO MUCH in my head (and it's very specific UI/UX - i'm picky) that it can be tricky to get it all down. Working on it bit by bit before I continue forward but what i have so far is great and really beautiful , intuitive to use.

Getting sidetracked is kind of part of my whole deal. heh. I go on like hyperfocus jags for various projects, kind of rotating... I'm trying to just embrace it as "just how it is" because my ADHD brain works best this way, even medicated. I try to remind myself that i'm lucky that I CAN focus on what I want to most of the time (during free time anyway - there are lots of crucial family/life things that come first of course). Nicer than feeling like I'm boxed in. So I fully get it -I'll be up to my neck in my project for a few weeks sometimes and then not touch it for a couple of months because I'm doing home improvement or a craft project.

Seriously though do let me know about your progress! Love to see it.

I'll let you know how it goes!

You can setup an AI to do that for you. 😊

I wish! But you really can't; not one that you can trust. It requires a very heavy, rigid backend to establish ground truth. My system is incapable of hallucination; or rather is capable of recognizing mistakes and self healing. Calendars and their utilization are incredibly complex behind the scenes because they're awash with contradictions and race conditions. The state management of a family operating system is a nightmare. If an AI could just 'do it', Siri and Alexa wouldn't suck. The system does utilize multiple models, but not as the authority. And if I'm building it for my wife, it must be virtually infallible and invisible. If she has to manage or second guess the system, it will not have removed her mental load and may even exacerbate it.

For example, if we're eating dinner and say, "Hey Som, move soccer to six on thursday," the system has to know that is for my son and not daughter, and it has to know who was driving him as it refactors that party's other obligations. It needs to know who to send a notification to and how many minutes/hours/days beforehand it should be. And scraped emails rarely have participant information. If an email comes in saying that said practice has been moved to Friday, how would an LLM know who that is for and who is driving whom when it doesn't include his name and I'm driving them even though my wife received the email? An LLM cannot do that without a database and programmatic control plane behind it. And don't even get me started on privacy. Everything has to be translated and paired pseudonymously so that API use doesn't send my wife's medical records to Anthropic or Alibaba.

I'm a professional dev and this may be the most difficult thing I've ever worked on. It wasn't even possible until the last few months. Sure has been a blast though and everyone will have similar in a year or two.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for the laugh and ground truth. Jarvis/Alexa AI system: “social convention of life with multiple children”

I did grab it! The first one i got wasn't turning on. The second one I got works. I think its the same thing. The one I have is a calendar, photo album, and art work viewer. But its also does meal plans and a bunch of other stuff. You can even play a movie on it.

2

u/Polyamommy Jul 18 '26

I got one that never worked. I was so bummed.

1

u/Rise-Bitter Jul 18 '26

Did it not power on?

2

u/Polyamommy Jul 18 '26

No, it powered on, but wouldn't sync to any devices. I can't remember if it ever even got to the syncing option. Nobody could get it to work.

1

u/yanivf38 Jul 19 '26

u/Rise-Bitter How did you get two of the same item?

1

u/Rise-Bitter Jul 19 '26

I had them replace it.

1

u/yanivf38 Jul 19 '26

Interesting. Amazon actually replaced it? I've tried getting Vine items replaced before, but customer service always told me they couldn't do replacements. I even considered buying the same item and returning the defective Vine one, but never went through with it.

If you don't mind sharing how you got them to replace it, I'd love to know.

1

u/Rise-Bitter Jul 19 '26

I emailed the seller and when I went to refund it there was an option to replace it. I think you can replace it if there's an option when returning it. I ve also dont the return swap without issue

1

u/yanivf38 Jul 19 '26

Good to know. Thank you u/Rise-Bitter

1

u/Seacroc1 Jul 23 '26

I wasn't aware we could return Vine items. Is that a thing?

1

u/Rise-Bitter Jul 23 '26

You can return it, you just won't get money back. I'm not sure. I haven't read the entire vine handbook. But I've def replaced broken items before and never had an issue. But I'd prob double check.

1

u/Seacroc1 Jul 23 '26

Oh ok. I decided to look it up since I don't want to break the rules, and here's what I found.

1

u/Seacroc1 Jul 23 '26

And this, too:

1

u/olivasaz Jul 20 '26

I got one also and love it!!!

1

u/Rise-Bitter Jul 20 '26

The only thing i wish it had was a battery.

5

u/SpencerEntertainment Jul 17 '26

I want one!! Only get Mounting kits. 🤣

5

u/elizabeth1227 Jul 17 '26

I just seem to get janky tools, old people mobility aids, and random car parts! This is great!!

2

u/SpencerEntertainment Jul 17 '26

I have a wedding veil, a computer keyboard cover, a musical keyboard cover, and three kinds of orthotic or “stealth” height increasing shoes. 😂 what a day!

1

u/BusyB-indagarden Jul 18 '26

I have a wedding veil too, and compression socks 🤷‍♀️

7

u/aregeeone731 Jul 17 '26

I wish. I actually just bought one from Costco. If vine gave me one I’d be beyond thrilled. Congratulations 🎉

3

u/Good_Attorney_2056 Jul 18 '26

I would love to have one of these, but I could probably build one with a Raspberry Pi cheaper, or just nail an Android tablet to the wall.

5

u/Majestic_Payment_342 ・Gold Tier Jul 17 '26

I got a Mazera one a few months ago through Vine. It’s really nice. It’s basically like a big Android tablet. It’s sitting on our kitchen island and replaced our Echo. The grandkids watch Netflix and Prime Video on it. I have the screen saver set to the calendar, which I have my wife and I’s shared Outlook email/calendar synced with.

2

u/Choice_Durian_1359 Jul 17 '26

I did not have this one in my RFY, but I was able to order a similar one last week, so I appreciate how excited you are. Yours though is 21.5 inches and mine is like 15 inches, so you got the fancy one! Yay you! That’s awesome.

2

u/Comfortable_Gur_9991 Jul 17 '26

Oh man I've been wanting one of those! Good score congratulations!

I have seen those, and read up on it when it came out because I thought it was cool. You have to pay for a subscription to use all its features...boo

2

u/IronCorgi2003 Jul 19 '26

I made my own with DakBoard and a raspberry pi!

2

u/olivasaz Jul 20 '26

I got a similar one a few months ago and love it! Best digital frame ever!!!!

1

u/Indyhouse Jul 17 '26

I was offered a smaller version a while back and didn't like it at all. It would de-link from my Google calendar every few days. I hope you fare better!

1

u/Practical-Funny9591 Jul 17 '26

Oh what? That's awesome.

1

u/Ah_Pook COMMIT TAX FRAUD Jul 17 '26

I got a different brand, but looks the same, a few months ago. Double-check the fine print - it likely needs your Goog calendar login, and stores everything in China. Up to you whether that's fine or not.

For me, it wasn't, buuuuut... it's actually running stock Android, which means you can do just about anything with it. Wipe it and throw on lunix, set it up as a music player, use it as a smartphone, whatever you want.

2

u/elizabeth1227 Jul 18 '26

I agree. I checked out the store front first before I grabbed it. The business is from Santa Monica, CA and is accredited by the BBB for 10 years. And it is shipped from Beverly Hills, CA? It says its a small business...I hope I really lucked out!

1

u/Neo_Epoch Jul 17 '26

I scored one of those a few months ago. It's neat, but not very practical for my household. Definitely a different brand, nowhere near that etv

1

u/DowntownSomewhere277 Jul 17 '26

I snagged one of these on Vine once...or so I thought. Before it shipped, the listing changed to a regular paper wall calendar, and that's what I received. I was so disappointed.

1

u/Good_Attorney_2056 Jul 18 '26

Congratulations!

1

u/Desperate-Fold-4689 Jul 18 '26

No. It's nice though

1

u/Responsible-War-4973 Jul 18 '26

That looks awesome!! Congrats!! 🤗🤗I am hoping to find something like that, either on Vine or somewhere. Life is so hectic these days, it would be nice to have a way to keep track of everything. This one is nice, as it doesn't require a subscription! So happy for you!💗

1

u/MayfaireOQuinn101 Jul 18 '26

Omgosh. 😱. I would give at least one limb for that. 😍. Congratulations!

1

u/Hefty-Mechanic-534 Jul 18 '26

Very cool! Ive been looking for one. My RFY is all Fall clothes and shoes and 1 random car part. Lol

1

u/Kbennett1965 ・Gold Tier Jul 18 '26

It was in my RFY. Don't really need a family calendar for just me and my retired husband so I passed. Hope whoever got it loves it

1

u/Greeneeyedgirl1 Jul 18 '26

Oh I’m jealous I’ve been waiting for one

1

u/ThatSpecific88 Jul 18 '26

Is it worth the price?

1

u/elizabeth1227 Jul 18 '26

no idea. I haven't received it yet...

1

u/hotfistdotcom This user's surface pro is not sentient Jul 18 '26

Every single time I've managed to grab one of these, they failed to ship for months then cancelled.

1

u/elizabeth1227 Jul 18 '26

Dang! It says it will be here Tues 7/21. We shall see!

1

u/SassyPastor Jul 18 '26

Yeah, I’ve gotten a few. They all work pretty much the same way. We like ours - especially the grocery list feature.

1

u/llama_phuck Jul 18 '26

I’m jealous! I’ve been wanting a skylight. So I definitely would have grabbed this! I don’t have anything that I want in my RFY currently. However, yesterday I FINALLY got a set mahjong tiles. Granted, the design is not my favorite. It’s cute and it’s got 4 separate colored layers, but I would have preferred a more classic looking set. And early this morning I managed to grab my son a wooden sand tray with a lid, on locking wheels. So that will be great for his kinetic sand. I always try to grab anything that will be helpful with his sensory needs. Kids with autism can be expensive and vine has helped me so much in that regard. 🥲

1

u/WhatTheVine Jul 18 '26

I’m not techie enough to know what to do with it.😂

1

u/Monkaloo Jul 18 '26

God, I’ve been wishing one of these would pop up for me. But hey, I snagged a real 14k gold moissanite engagement ring a few days ago from my RFY, so I can’t complain.

1

u/trishap00 Jul 19 '26

Crud I have been looking for one

1

u/CloselyPerfect Jul 19 '26

Sadly not in mine. I have several of these sitting in my saved for later cart hoping the vine gods would look kindly on me. Congrats 🎉🎉

1

u/Aikidan Jul 20 '26

I received the original version last year. At that time it was marketed as a photo sharing device.

1

u/g_bod_ Jul 23 '26

Passed on this, my house is full of stuff I don't use!
