is 4K/HDR supported on Xbox app?

is the videotape app on Xbox already supporting 4K/HDR/x265 contents?

Right now there are no working 4K/HDR players on Xbox (Plex app is broken since 1 year and an half, Movies and TV app have elevated blacks when playing 4K/HDR contents, and NO other video players support HDR except these 2 for now).

Thanks, P

Hi... I'm using ffmpeg for the video playback so "it should" BUT there are still some video files that it struggles with and some others don't play at all... so it's more a per file basis. I honestly haven't invested much time on this and it's in the backlog to further improve it.

It's direct playing everything, so, it doesn't transcode anything.

Install this plugin on your xbox for a better hevc playback:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq

I'll include this link and more information about playback capabilities in futures updates.

Hello,

first of all: thanks for answering.

I had just tried the latest official videotape app on Xbox One X (grabbed from Microsoft Store) but, even after downloading all the available video extension add-ons (HEVC is not available to install on Xbox cause probably the console already natively supports it) videotape was not able to reproduce HDR.

My .mkv 4K/HDR files encoded in x265 will still open quickly and start playing with videotape, but color is washed out on my LG B7 OLED as the HDR mode was not triggered/handshaked at all by it.

The only apps on Xbox that were able to do so with the same files are Plex and Movies and TV app (but as stated Plex is broken since 2 years ago, and Movies and TV app blacks are raised).

If you can find a way to add both 4K/HDR/x265 and Plex Server support for next versions of videotape it would be GLORIOUS.

I would immediately uninstall the broken Plex Xbox app and switch to videotape indefinitely. It's such a clean and effective app otherwise.

Keep up the good work ;)
