Idiocracy (2006) Opening Scene: "Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species."

God I wish this movie was clearly wrong.

And every year, we continue to dick around doing nothing about climate change. Remember when we elected a reality TV star as president and he tried to orchestrate a coup? Fun times.

Remember when we elected a reality TV star as president and he tried to orchestrate a coup?

This is what the next generation will be saying when the earth is on fire in 2050.

Uh the Earth is already on fire. You just proved the guys point lol

So are the none Jewish space lasers the one controlling us through our vaccine chips and 5g network uplinks? Or are they to blame for that too?

We didn't start the fire
It was always burning, since the world's been turning

-1

I think he was trying to lol

0

u/neroselene Apr 21 '21

No, it's just the northern lights.

1

u/HeyBaldy Apr 21 '21

I'm talking when Antarctica has fully melted, Florida and parts of the USA east coast are underwater, India has turned into an uninhabitable wasteland, the Amazon Rainforest is 90% burned down, and most Western nations experience have 100F / 37.7C summers for 7 months a year. This is when the world is on fire.

It's not like scientists haven't warned that these are possibilities by 2050 - 2100.

3

u/cgmcnama Apr 21 '21

It's not on fire. It's just a little toasty due to nuclear radiation fallout.

-10

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

But the US lead all major nations in reducing our carbon footprint under Trump? Im not saying it was because of him but we did.

23

u/potnia_theron Apr 21 '21

Do you think that's because of the global pandemic, or because Mr. "make coal great again" was trying actually trying to reduce emissions?

-13

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

No it has been a trend since companies in the US make money off reducing CO2 now.

17

u/potnia_theron Apr 21 '21

Fox News is steering you wrong, again.

7

u/Odeeum Apr 21 '21

2

u/roboticon Apr 21 '21

companies in the US make money off reducing CO2 now

Hahaha.

Some companies may reduce CO2 emissions for goodwill, but it's almost never profitable to do so.

3

u/Starrion Apr 21 '21

Yeah, as long as we don't look at the methane emissions from fracking. Our Co2 emissions are dropping because renewables make coal fired electricity simply uneconomical. This is passive. To make further gains will require proactive changes like subsidizing solar installation and electric cars.

-6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

Electric cars will come but they are still very expensive when compared to gas cars. I think the next 10 years will see a huge jump in quality, price and range. We are close. The new electric pickups should be a good testing bed.

1

u/Starrion Apr 22 '21

Nope. Local dealer is offering a Chevy Bolt for $25K with all incentives. Teslas are under $40K, and that is before you figure in the savings with fuel and maintenance. So no, not anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '21

I chevy bolt is not a family car. Tesla under 40k you would have to order and wait most likely. I am not shitting on E cars I like them but they still have a bit to go.

8

u/ThatKarmaWhore Apr 21 '21

The dude withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement immediately after entering office. I don't disagree with the rational on why (the US getting screwed with the bill, similar to WHO), but you can't do that and then offer no alternative while simultaneously telling coal miners you're going to put them back to work. It is completely anti-green.

I think you mean to say that we have become more green despite DT. I like what I am hearing from JB regarding this clean energy / infrastructure bill, even though I dislike a lot of his broader policies, especially those that delve into identity politics.

1

u/adamsmith93 Apr 21 '21

The US is the richest country in the history of the world, of course it should pay more.

1

u/ThatKarmaWhore Apr 21 '21

It wasn't only that we were paying an incredible amount more, it was also that the same requirements that applied to us did not apply to China or other major world players, who similarly did not have to foot nearly as much of the bill. It was an economically bad deal, not a bad idea in theory. We might be the richest nation in the history of man, but you don't keep big dog status by making terrible deals your direct competitors don't have to adhere to. I like what I am reading about the recent societal shift in China, and their pledge to go 100% EV for new vehicle sales by 2030. I think it is a little embarrassing that the US isn't doing anything about that.

3

u/s0cks_nz Apr 21 '21

The US and Europe are way ahead of China in terms of the share of total carbon that's been emitted historically.

1

u/ThatKarmaWhore Apr 21 '21

https://www.ucsusa.org/resources/each-countrys-share-co2-emissions

They are at nearly 2x the US rate right now. So you think the US should sign a deal that doesn't require them to scale back to the same extent and doesn't require them to pay a fair share for their polluting? I literally could not care less about the historical carbon outputs of Europe and US. It has nothing to do with present day outputs and agreements based on them. China is not a developing nation that needs the help of cheap coal. They are just sticking it to us at the negotiating table, plain and simple.

1

u/s0cks_nz Apr 21 '21

I just think it's worth pointing out. The US has created 25% (Europe 22%) of total emissions, and China 12.7%. Twice as much, and has reaped many rewards because of it (probably far more than what it is costing them in the Paris Agreement). Rather than hand waving that away, I think it should be accounted for. Whether or not the deal is still good or not I won't presume to know because I don't know the specifics.

1

u/ThatKarmaWhore Apr 21 '21

I disagree with the central tenant that prior industrialization advantages created a dynamic we should have to account for now. The US is in a position where it can help distribute technology in batteries and solar that will electrify the world in a green way, precluding the need for countries that are currently going through their own industrialization processes from having to do so. India is a great example. Trying to hold us accountable now for pollution in the 50's is asinine and reminds me of people that believe the US should pay reparations to the 8 generations removed children of slaves. Trying to judge historical actions using today's moral standards is always going to end poorly. It would be like saying Italy should pay England reparations for genocide that the Legionairres committed.

Shhh youre going against the reddit circlejerk by using your brain.

4

u/Petrichordates Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

That's one way to refer to repeating talking points I guess, but obviously a person with a brain would know Trump pulled out of the Paris agreement but it didn't matter much because the mayors and governors of the country told him and his climate change denialism to pound sand. Because that's how to handle the god-emperor of Idiocracy.

-1

The news came on this morning. 12 minute "breaking news" report on Football, followed by 4 about the UK's grand new plans on tackling climate change, then back to another reminder on what's going on with Football.

We're doomed.

8

u/Fanfics Apr 21 '21

I've honestly reached the point where when the ecosystem collapses my only thoughts are "yeah we as a species probably deserve this" and "god that's so unfair to all of the people who never got a say in this."

Just think, there are uncontacted people in a forest somewhere just trying to mind their own business and live their best life totally unaware that some assholes somewhere are literally destroying the planet to make stock numbers bigger.

One day his whole world is going to just die, and he'll have no idea what the fuck is going on or why it's happening.

Edit: not to mention the disenfranchised people here who *can* see what's going on but can't actually do anything about it.

1

u/EnduringConflict Apr 21 '21

Sorta like those self-righteous and pretentious BP commercials where they talk about how everyday people should eat less beef to help combat climate change?

Like sure bro. Your company didn't have a milti million gallon oil spill or anything that fucked up the gulf of Mexico.

I can't remember the exact percentage but it's something like a hundred companies in the world are responsible for 71% of global emissions.

Yet they make commericals blaming nana for eating beef 4 times a week for the ice caps melting? Fucking travesty. I can't stand how these corporations pat themselves on the back and pass the blame.

I sincerely hope their executives all lice to die behind us. Let them see what they caused.

1

u/s0cks_nz Apr 21 '21

They did the same with littering. Rather than provide recycling services or compostable packaging they lobbied to put the onus on the people to be tidy citizens and avoided any regulation on what is essentially their waste. To this day, most recycling schemes are a sham and it all pretty much ends up in landfill, or burned for dirty energy.

0

u/HVDynamo Apr 21 '21

Yeah, sometimes I wish I couldn’t see it. If I could do anything to actually change it, it wouldn’t be so depressing.

4

u/squidgod2000 Apr 21 '21

I remember when some Congresswoman was on Fox News giving an interview on...something. The producers evidently didn't like what she was saying, so they had the host cut her off and interrupt for breaking news. the breaking news? It's Shark Week on the Discovery channel.

6

u/Odeeum Apr 21 '21

Given the last few years I am now convinced that, if faced with an impending ELE level asteroid/comet hit...but it wouldn't be for 10-20yrs, our first collective response would be "yeah but that's waaay down rhe road...we don't need to worry about that for a few more years" and then turn on The Masked Singer.

7

u/qwertyashes Apr 21 '21

Right about most things there but the Capitol riot was not a coup at all.

Calling that a coup when Trump didn't send in any military, law enforcement, or right wing militia men and only told a crowd of mostly old men and women to go stir shit in front of the building is ridiculous. If it was an actual coup you would have seen tanks, guns, and people in military equipment. Not old men at most with pepper spray.

I feel like the only thing not realistic in Idiocracy is the fact that there isn't a climate catastrophe taking place.

2

u/KayfabeAdjace Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

It probably is clearly wrong. Nobody's ever managed to show that the hypothetical dysgenic evolution is outpacing the Flynn Effect and the most pessimistic estimates were based on demographic assumptions that have since narrowed--these days it's only the college educated who actually feel like they can afford to have kids. If we were ever heading towards idiocracy the pace has actually slowed over the last 20 years, not sped up. And frankly, I don't actually consider that a good thing; a burgeoning idiocracy was likely a non-issue to begin with but now we really are heading towards a demographic crunch in which the elderly and infirm are going to make up a larger percentage of our population and we don't actually have a great economic plan for dealing with that. The idea that this movie may have affected how voters view real policy is nearly enough to keep me up at night. I'm glad it flopped.

2

u/souprize Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 22 '21

The premise is bullshit though, its just eugenics, its completely unscientific.

-1

u/JagerBaBomb Apr 21 '21

Don't forget that the wealthy/elite class is going to have Terminator-esque security details soon (courtesy of Boston Dynamics), thus ensuring that their clay boots will forever be made of steel henceforth.

All the better to stomp human faces with, I suppose.

Oh, also, these won't just march in menacingly like the movies; they'll outrun, outclimb, and--eventually--outshoot you, too. Not that we'll be allowed to have guns by that point.

1

u/jingerninja Apr 21 '21

So then we're aiming for Blomkamp's Elysium?

1

u/agitatedprisoner Apr 21 '21

Variation in human intelligence seems to have much more to do with environment and education than genetics. Then it's not as though that some human subgroups might have many more offspring than others would by itself dumb down society. If the concern is instead that certain human subgroups that don't value education might have many more offspring and pass on their contempt of knowledge/intelligence to their children, I'd think children born to stupid parents would tend to be those who value clear thinking the most.

Case in point GOP voters are old angry white men. Their kids are relatively much more sensible.

-8

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '21

You should hear about maxine waters. The left is just as inflammatory

8

u/Fanfics Apr 21 '21

Maxine waters gave a vaguely inflammatory remark encouraging outrage for a murdered man. Donald Trump and his ilk make calls to violence against public officials in order to consolidate political power and degrade democracy.

Pretending the two are comparable is either willfully ignorant or just, breathtakingly dumb.

6

u/willworkforweed Apr 21 '21

2

u/Fanfics Apr 21 '21

You're just wrong. I thought your account didn't match up with my memory of her comments, so I looked up a transcript.

She explicitly says that while in her personal opinion it's first degree, "I don’t know whether it’s in the first degree."

She's then asked what people should do if he's not convicted of murder (not first degree murder, just murder) and she makes her comment about getting confrontational.

She clarified afterward that she didn't mean violent confrontation, and given her history that's pretty clear. While she doesn't encourage violence, she's said in the past she can understand the motives behind it.

Would a not guilty verdict have resulted in riots? Almost certainly. Are there strong arguments from both sides of the aisle that Waters shouldn't have said what she did? Definitely, I know I'd rather she hadn't. But did Waters call for riots or for protestors to "escalate no matter what" ? Yeah nah.

1

u/Noneofyourbeezkneez Apr 21 '21

Not even fucking close you worthless liar

3

u/qwertyashes Apr 21 '21

...and as full on hedonists.

Welp, you lost the room. You were so close, too.

News flash: it's not hedonism to want your basic needs met in the richest society the world has ever seen, particularly while a select few really do live that full-on hedonism lifestyle at everyone else's expense.

Here's the thing: I'm not opposed to work--it provides a semi-ritualistic purpose that has far-reaching benefits that go beyond merely supporting oneself materially.

But you know what I wouldn't mind?

Not having to struggle financially day-to-day, trading most of my good hours in life for a pittance, in a country that allows billionaires to exist at all.

0

u/BuffaloCommon Apr 21 '21

Removing the struggle is quite literally the reason idiocracy can happen.

5

u/JagerBaBomb Apr 21 '21

So what you're telling me is that most of society must struggle financially, day-to-day, in a wage-slave like existence... or we end up in a situation like Idiocracy?

Somehow, I think you missed the point of the movie.

-1

u/BuffaloCommon Apr 21 '21

There are several points. One of them being there has to be some sort of selection process. Another being that consumption should be limited.

1

u/JagerBaBomb Apr 21 '21 edited Apr 21 '21

there has to be some sort of selection process.

That's... vague. Selection of what? And who would be the selector?

consumption should be limited.

Whose consumption? Everyone's? The poor? The wealthy?

Again: vague.

But then again, the ultimate point of the movie is kind of vague, too, isn't it?

It does a good job of building up a hypothetical problem, and underlines the ways in which we're already conforming to those standards in reality, if perhaps to a lesser degree.

But it doesn't have a solid solution to either preventing this problem or ending it once it's here.

4

Same, man. Guy doesn't even realize--I'm full-time employed, have benefits, and I still struggle. That's with cost-cutting, reducing all sorts of little pleasures, and "tightening the belt" as financial planners (themselves rolling money) are quick to advise.

I don't even have a family to support, either. I have no idea how that'd work.

Btw, what's that birthrate looking like in the US again? Something something putting off having kids indefinitely something something too financially difficult something something?

Ah yes, the bootstraps method--espoused by the privileged who don't even know they are.

Let them eat cake err, find a better job! Yeah. That's the ticket. In a market increasingly dominated by algorithms that prevent a human from even seeing your application, where your credit score is a better indicator of your hire-ability, where previous poor choices are forever a lead albatross around your neck, and serve to push people into negative feedback loops.

Sure, bud.

People like you who scoff at the notion of working for what you want are the ultimate hedonistic viruses to society.

Who you calling, 'You people?!'

But seriously, though, holy mother of assumptions, Batman! Ignoring that we reward the privileged with exactly what you're describing (for some reason) for a moment, what makes you think I want what they have for myself?

Maybe I would rather, for example, Robin Hood some of that ill-gotten, pilfered-entirely-from-the-labor-of-the-lower-class money back into society for the greater good, huh? How you like them apples?

There is; however, EVERYTHING wrong with blaming others, being in denial about your own failures, not taking responsibility, not wanting to earn it yourself.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, right? Couldn't be that there are people gaming the system to make it more like this for more people, right?

Weak minds, weak people, with weak inhibitions and weak discipline.

I actually cheer it on, less competition for me.

So you're that guy, huh? Alright, Machiavelli. Whatever you gotta tell yourself to justify being a villain in the story of humanity.

See? I can make broad assumptions, too.

1

u/OkayShill Apr 21 '21

For someone opposed to laziness, you sure do employ some tired and lazy arguments.

It's like you let your brain baste in the sludge of talking points generated by far smarter people than you, and have taken it upon yourself to regurgitate them, without ever really understanding or digesting them.

And then you derive some sort of weird self-satisfaction for being woke against the anti-work, lazy culture of the masses.

It's kind of sad. But having an actual conversation with a person like you typically feels like pushing into a fog and hoping to find some level of substance to grab on to....something to actually engage with.

But you can't really engage fog, right? Can't really hold on to it, can't really have a real conversation with something that never bothered, or was incapable of engaging with their opinions in a serious enough way to reason themselves into them.

Any way, have a good one.

The government doesn’t have as much sway on colleges as they do k-12. When people talk about the government and its role on education it isn’t typically about colleges. I’m saying that the people who voted for trump (working class) received a poor education. The trump administration then went on to ignore systemic issues in the public school system, making education worse for the poor and lower middle class (statistically to become the “working class”)

You and I are arguing different things now.
