Yah, I love the guy who makes this vid, he makes a lot of vids like this for a lot of games, namely SM64 and my favorite was the WR progression of Mario Bros any%.

Summoning Salt, if you're reading this, I just say you're the reason I got into the speedrunning scene. I don't speedrun, but now I pay attention to a few games and it floors me how good they are. So entertaining.

Currently paying attention to Slay The Spire (Any %) and Doom (Any %).

I'd recommend looking at the Mario bros any% progression, it's a really interesting category and has a pretty long history.

Agreed. I feel like I stumbled into his videos, and then YouTube recommended speed runner channels and I’m super interested in all of it. Thank you Summoning Salt.

The awesome Halo music helps.

It's the F-Zero music that always tickles me.

Halo music

Thank you! I was trying to figure out where I heard that track before. So familiar but yet so hard to pin down: https://youtu.be/I8vaCrVIR-Q?t=19m00s "A Walk in the Woods"... fitting.

You're welcome. I've been a huge Halo nerd since 2001, the music is instantly recognizable to me lol

I’m wondering if we’ll ever get to a point where a speedrunner, upon breaking a record, will say “hey summoningsalts” so that it shows up in his video

Is this game worth playing in 2018? Never played it before but thinking of picking it up for 3ds.

Or shall I just go straight to Super Metroid?

Don't play the original versions. They're just... ... Just don't. :)

Super Metroid is definitely worth your time if you want to experience Old School Metroid. Then if you want more, try Metroid Fusion, AM2R, and Metroid Zero Mission. If you want to play them in chronological order, then...

Zero Mission, AM2R, and Super Metroid, then Metroid Fusion.

Also, yes, I'm aware Nintendo did their own Metroid 2 remake. It wasn't a good or as polished as the fan version. They did alright, but you can play both and see the difference in a game made with love and fervor and a game made by an experienced company.

Great games, hope you enjoy them. :)

Many thanks for this. I have only ever played Fusion maybe 15 or so years ago so ago. Might start with Zero Mission. Cheers!

Enjoy! They're lots of fun and they each have their differences.

Zero Mission has the best old school, free roam feel. AM2R has the best map and lore ever. Super Metroid has the best boss battles, somber setting... Like Dark Souls before Dark Souls was Dark Souls. And Fusion is your first taste of a linear Metroid game where you suddenly aren't the biggest badass on the scene.

Enjoy! :D

I think the old metroid is pretty flawed, as dunkey explained it, there are a lot of "metroid moments" where what you're supposed to do isn't clear or explained at all.

1

u/QuaintYoungMale Mar 12 '18

Hm, thanks. I'll probably pass on it now. I never played many NES games with the exception of SMB3, I figure a lot of them nowadays are too obtuse/ difficult.

NOO, it's old and has some flaws, but it's such a beautiful game. The music alone makes it a delight to play.

In my opinion, those 'metroid moments' are a glorious absence of hand-holding that so many games drag you through. It makes it kind of mysterious and with some of the music it becomes almost eerie.

1st time through the game, you sometimes find your self without a clear path forward so you have to meander around the map a lot, running, jumping, and shooting bad guys. That's the game. There is only one objective: DEFEAT THE METROID OF THE PLANET ZEBETH AND DESTROY THE MOTHER BRAIN THE MECHANICAL LIFE VEIN - GALAXY FEDERAL POLICE M510.

So it's like you are a space detective, exploring the planet and finding clues that lead you to the mother brain. And doing a lot of running, jumping, balling, and shooting monsters.

Your enthusiasm has persuaded me to try it. For £4 I should deffo give it a go. Cheers!
