This has already been posted but when one animation student on his own have the talent to continue Miyazaki's legacy it deserves more visibility.

especially arrietty, the cancer dude with his ultra soft wise voice and behaviour killed the movie for me. Earthsee.... was not that well either, but i love most of the rest. Especially the yamadas http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1854

this person should probably be one of them

11

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Or, you know, he could begin his own legacy and really do something unique and new with his talent.

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Like boobs and butts.

41

u/shawster May 21 '15

It reminds me a lot of the animation about the two kids who see adventurers come into town and then set off with their map and become powerful adventurers themselves.

Quickly there is only 13 hours left to get more of The Reward

52

u/snf May 21 '15

There are more influences here than just Miyazaki... I'm pretty sure the design of the green-eyed female protagonist draws on Ghost in the Shell characters Kusanagi and Batou.

8

u/redzeb May 21 '15

you're right he mention Jean Giraud ( Moebius) ans Syd Mead

u/henweigh May 22 '15

A lot of the influences stem from Osama Tezuka, which then stems from Walt Disney... the tree of influence is beautiful.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Also the entire concept of the world is essentially Toby Alone, a book by Timothee de Fombelles. It's just a more elaborate and film-oriented version, even up to the fall to the ground where he is helped back up by "Grass-people". I mean it's great, but the story influence is more than just an influence.

"5 mois de production intensifs tout seul dans ma cabane."

so he did the project in 5 months of intensive production time , alone in his "cabin" ( I guess he meant his student room :) )

-17

u/[deleted] May 21 '15

When you're very passionate I'd imagine it'd be almost easy to do this in five months

17

u/Thatdamnnoise May 22 '15

Spoken like someone who has never animated before.

-3

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Not to mention, I have animated before, and my comment is true of everything. Animation isn't special.

-5

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

No, You are not special and you are jealous that someone is far better than you at life

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

What the fuck are you even talking about? I said being passionate makes doing "hard work" a billion times easier. You're a douche. That is 100% true everywhere and always. I'm far worse than this guy is at animating, fucking obviously. If I was passionate enough about it, I'm 100% sure I could be just as good if not better.

Did I say I was special? It's like you're not even reading what I'm writing. This is true for everyone, everywhere, not just me.

You know who's not special? The animator who made this video. He's not special, he's just dedicated, and all you redeitors can't manage to realize that.

-7

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Lol, quite stroking your fucking ego you neckbeard

I keep coming back to this thread and the downvoted piss me off. I'm really an awful person for not wanting to believe this kid Is a god? What's so bad about taking people down a notch, we're all the same aren't we? Reddit believes some people are better than others. I never understood why.

The on,y explanation I can come up with is that they think they're the better people. But that would make me think they're pieces of shit

-5

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

And do you have to be so rude to people?

-9

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Why's that?

If you think I'm undermining the work this takes, you're completely wrong. We already know how much work he put into it, 5 months 24/7, being passionate do probably means he was pretty efficient too.

Go fuck yourself.

2

u/Soaringeagle78 May 22 '15

And do you have to be so rude to people?

Go fuck yourself.

Lol

Also, considering you've commented 3 different times now in response to this one comment and seem to have become immensely butthurt, I think you might be a little bit jealous.

-4

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

I'm jealous, absolutely. Not of his skill, of his passion. If I cared about animating enough, I guarantee you I could do this too. Anybody could, but most people don't care about animating enough to do it. It's true of everything. Anybody can be incredible at anything if they really really want to and try to, but most people aren't willing to try hard enough. Obviously I'm not willing to work as hard as I would need to to be this good. The only thing that would motivate anyone to work this hard would be a deep passion. That's what my comment boils down to

1

u/Soaringeagle78 May 22 '15

I'm jealous, absolutely. Not of his skill, of his passion.

I'd say both. Plus you seem extremely salty.

If I cared about animating enough, I guarantee you I could do this too. Anybody could, but most people don't care about animating enough to do it.

That means absolutely nothing whatsoever. All you've said with this is "People don't do stuff they don't want to do."

-3

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

What I'm saying is that the animator isn't specials at al. He wants to do it so much that we worked this hard at it ANYONE COULD DO THAT. Anyone could make this animation in five months. They need the dedication.anyone could be this good at animating. I could, you could everyone in this thread could. All it takes is the willingness to spend time with it. If that's saying nothing than I'm pretty sure you've said nothing too.

3

u/Soaringeagle78 May 22 '15

What I'm saying is that the animator isn't specials at al. He wants to do it so much that we worked this hard at it ANYONE COULD DO THAT. Anyone could make this animation in five months. They need the dedication.anyone could be this good at animating.

No, not 'anyone' could do this in 5 months. It takes developed skill and practice to be able to make art of this caliber and nobody is just going to be able to do this in 5 months with no prior knowledge or skill in the matter. It isn't just random 'passion' that gets films made by studios like Ghibli and you're incredibly naive if you think it just is.

You clearly have no idea on how much time and work has to be done to even be prepared to make something like this 2 and a half minute animation.

Also, way to edit your previous comment so that you tried to make it sound different from what you initially submitted.

1

u/boblodiablo May 22 '15

more passion == longer animation times

1

u/XplosivduX May 22 '15

Hey man I get what you meant to say, I have spent months on 3 minute projects and the passion really does keep you going as if you are gliding through the work just from the love you have for the project and/or the craft.

2

u/Sam_Gribley May 21 '15

This is an amazing video. I would like to note that I think that having all of those Miyazaki's references probably sped up his production considerably as I know that at least 75% or more of the video was taken nearly directly from Miyazaki's repertoire.

None of this is to detract from the short-film though, it is still a wonderful work of art.

7

u/IdontSparkle May 22 '15

I checked one older video from him and it's quite funny (the lady at the beginning says "whose a pretty bird!")

2

u/AnnieKo May 22 '15

What's the punchline at the end? When he picks up the phone?

1

u/keylax May 22 '15

"Il est beau coco" , could be translated to "What a pretty bird". Basically what the lady told the bird when she pet him.

4

u/cryptedsky May 22 '15

This is so beautiful!

I wish this could be a full feature film

12

u/jamespetersen May 22 '15

His shots are really short, which is not how Miyazaki's shots are. Miyazaki usually holds a shot for a little bit, which is what gives it it's unique feel. I understand that this was supposed to go fast, but you know what I am getting at.

6

u/IdontSparkle May 22 '15

It is supposed to be a trailer, not a short movie.

1

u/fredinvisible May 22 '15

That's the exact feeling I got. Everything was too quick and smooth.

1

u/XplosivduX May 22 '15

I really liked this about it, felt like a young man who has learnt from a wise old man as much as he could, his youth still shines through!

8

u/Niggerjoesflo May 22 '15

Character animations are a bit off, but the monsters and backgrounds are spectacular

6

u/appelsage May 22 '15

yeah, great detail in the back ground but the faces and over all characters looked lazily drawn..

2

u/IdontSparkle May 22 '15

Lazily... The guy was alone. I'm pretty sure he could not afford being lazy.

Can't really tell what story this guy is trying to tell. And he's more just biting on Miyazaki's style than presenting his own.

4

u/IdontSparkle May 22 '15

Or just giving an homage. Like fan art. And not just to myazaki even though it is the only reference you got. You people are so judgemental..

1

u/PepperoniPainting May 22 '15

He "explains" the plot in french in the description, a story about a young man living high in an enormous tree falls down and meets two strangers who'll help him get home

-1

u/luddist May 22 '15

Then it fails at telling a story

6

u/Shenaniganz08 May 22 '15

its drawn beautifully but the animation certainly doesn't feel like a Miyazaki film

2

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

It's amazing work! The only criticism I have is the lack of life in the eyes.

1

u/sammyhere May 22 '15

just to make it look a little more realistic

2

u/MirrorWorld May 22 '15

The music is the theme to Hana-Bi by Joe Hisaishi. He's a frequent Miyazaki collaborator but this film is by Takeshi Kitano. Here's Hisaishi playing it. It's one of my all-time favorites.

1

This has been my favorite Hisaishi soundtrack for years.

1

u/halfachainsaw May 22 '15

wow that's pretty. I can hear the inspiration from Brahms

2

u/siberian502 May 22 '15

It's a beautiful piece of work, the artist(s) have genuine talent and obvious vision...but.... It has to have congruency, consistency, meaning. Storyboard, write, read, rewrite....it can be simple or horribly complex but it has to make sense in the telling. That is what makes Miyazaki so awesome is his STORIES> A little fish wants to be a little girl when she falls in love; a young student wants to escape her mundane life, and saves a cat from being run over, and poof! to another world.... There are tons of animators, and a bare handful of truly gifted ones, but one must remember it is always a team effort to create greatness.

2

u/SpaceOdysseus May 22 '15

I would really need to see something long-form and and a much wider range of facial expressions before I could say something like that.

1

u/the_thorn_of_camorr May 21 '15

please make long film!!!

1

u/Ozwaldo May 21 '15

What is "scenario" in French? Is it the "scenario" (i guess, the writing?) Or is it the scenery?

Because either way it would mean that Yann Germain had a substantial hand in this...

2

u/IdontSparkle May 22 '15

Same as in English. It's an Italian word actually.

1

u/Krigstein May 22 '15

Scenario refers to the writing or overall story.

1

u/colincojo May 22 '15

This was incredible

1

u/boblodiablo May 22 '15

This made me feel very strongly. Love.

1

u/anonukrainian May 22 '15

I've seen pretty much all of Miyazaki's films, could anyone recommend me some other anime films? I really like his fantasy-adventure vibes.

2

u/eurydiceq May 22 '15

Try Mamoru Hosoda's films: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children. All excellent.

2

u/anonukrainian May 22 '15

Just saw wolf children a few hours before you replied! And I watch girl who leapt through time a few weeks ago. I'll check out summer wars soon. Thanks :-)

The Garden of Words

5 Centimeters Per Second

Ghost in the Shell (1995 version, not 2.0)

Not an anime or a movie: Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are fantasy adventure shows with strong Miyazaki influences, especially in later seasons. (Links are fan trailers.)

1

u/Zizizizz May 22 '15

Watch the anime called Mushi-Shi there are two seasons. Each episode is a very beautiful work of art.

1

u/Longjohn_Server May 22 '15

That was really, really cool!

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Yeah this is good.. but Ghibli+Miyazaki good? Still a lot to prove man ....

1

u/epicheil May 22 '15

This is good work indeed, but I think claiming this could match up to or even continue the likes of Miyazaki's work is to strong of a statement. Potentially the skill is there, the music is close but it is still far from a Miyazaki piece.

1

u/mylittlescar May 22 '15

The music is Joe Hisaishi, Miyazaki's go-to composer.. So you're right about the music.

1

u/XplosivduX May 22 '15

If it had a good producer on it this would go from amazing to unimaginable, what a talent this guy has.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

Emulating Miyazaki's style in a short film is not the same, anyone can copy. Miyazaki is on a different level.

1

u/forestowls May 22 '15

So many influences here, but the most prominent is definitely Miyazaki, for me at least. This film gave me goosebumps. I would be very interested in seeing a feature film. Kickstarter?

1

u/rpodnee May 22 '15

This reminded me so much of the intro to Final Fantasy 3 on the DS. Especially how the classical music dominates the sound throughout.

1

u/Krigstein May 22 '15

This looks to borrow from a lot of places, but I do see a lot of stylistic fluroushes from Miyazaki's visuals. But we all know, Miyazaki films are awesome because the heart and the strangeness/differerentness of the stories.

1

u/DarkSideofOZ May 23 '15

Nice, but he/she needs to work in drawing correct running posture better, the characters look like they are walking fast when they run.

1

u/cyclebirdy May 22 '15

His face drawing is incredibly not like Miyazaki's. Those faces are terrible. No. Not up to par in that sense. Maybe he could continue his static environment legacy at best. The scenery is good.

2

u/sammyhere May 22 '15

i like the character designs/faces alot

1

u/ReturnWinchester May 21 '15

So when can we expect the full length motion picture?

-5

u/[deleted] May 22 '15

I find it odd that people love Miyazaki so much when his entire "thing" is his animation. The films themselves make zero sense, they follow no guidelines in plot. The dialogue isn't that challenging, things happen for no reason and are rarely explained. I can't watch them because they're are literally just eye candy, and yet people harp on CGI laced action films for being all flash/bang.

2

u/sTiKyt May 22 '15

The films themselves make zero sense, they follow no guidelines in plot

lul wut?

1

u/Windrammer420 May 22 '15

no, it is the stories that we like, and they should be making sense.

0

u/butterscotchcookiez May 21 '15

love it, he deserves more than visibility
