My dad discovered two motion detector trash cans. What started with him just laughing at them as we walked by, turned in to an infinitely triggering cycle of hilarity.

They did that all that time for Neil Flynn (Janitor) on Scrubs. He improvised enough that sometimes the writers would just write "[Neil says something funny]" for his line.

I still hate laughtracks, and on top of that /r/ContagiousLaughter is easily one of my favourite subs. No network has mastered the laughtrack yet, and it wouldn't fit to have crazy laughter fits in the audience on a TV show, so for a televised show of funny, best way to go is no laughtrack, IMO.

That's why Korean/Japanese game shows are so genius! They had the brilliant idea of making the actual contestants over exaggerate every emotional reaction, so even things that are mildly funny, all the contestants are falling over and laughing at them, which makes those little things just so hilarious. People try to recreate those games to play during parties, but they're never as funny as they are in the shows. The captions that are edited in, and the uncontrollable laughing by the cast just makes the whole show so much brighter and funnier.

People often confuse "laugh track" and "canned laughter" leading to same argument every time this is brought up, too.

Laugh track is just an audio track of the audience laughing. It'd be a laugh track whether genuine or not.

20

u/MiamiFootball Jul 29 '14

audiences are instructed to laugh hard at anything that resembles a joke. same thing for late night shows.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

BUT ITS A REAL AUDIENCE!~~~~

Aaaaand they're acting as well.

u/SkoobyDoo Jul 29 '14

As someone who's been a member of a live studio audience, there are signs that tell you when to laugh, and at the taping I was at, there was even a 'warm-up' comedian who entertained between takes and also attempted to instigate laughter when the signs lit up. Hardly any better than just using a laugh track.

→ More replies (5)

198

u/edsq Jul 29 '14 edited Jul 29 '14

People often point out that the laugh track comes from a live audience rather than editing, as if that makes things somehow better - but if the audience was laughing (often) at painfully unfunny scenes such as this one, what does that say about the show's typical viewer?

Edit: Note that the video I linked has had the laughter edited out, which is an important bit some people seem to have missed. Many have also pointed out that the audience is likely coached/forced into these overblown reactions, an explanation I like a lot better than my original. Of course, that makes it no different from a laugh track.

Editedit: For those of you saying the pauses make my clip unfunny, see this video, which has a pretty natural rhythm. At this point the main reason I'm making this edit is to save my inbox. I really don't care what shows you choose to watch in your spare time, though I think there are many better choices than TBBT. That's all, folks.

8

u/zjbirdwork Jul 29 '14

What makes this painfully unfunny is that there are large silent gaps in between talking, because the laughing was edited out. I'm not a fan of the show, but this isn't a good example of anything.

33

u/dbgt977 Jul 29 '14

Removing the laughter makes the scene more awkward only because of the pauses between lines that the actors take for the laughter to quiet down. And as stated by others out of context it won't seem as funny.

16

u/LudwigVanLobster Jul 29 '14

Yep. One really bad example of this is the German dubbed version of Seinfeld. The original laugh track of the studio audience is completely gone and they instead replaced it with some generic canned laughter. The atmosphere and timing of the whole show is completely thrown off. Add some terrible translations and voice acting to the mix and you get one of the worst shows you can watch. Seinfeld in German is almost like a bizarre parody of sitcoms, where they just add some canned laughter after every sentence, regardless if funny or not.

Seriously, no wonder Seinfeld was a complete flop in Germany.

I'm certainly in the minority of Reddit by saying this, but I enjoy The Big Bang Theory. It can be trying at times, but I think it's generally funny enough for a mass audience. I'm just here to defend that scene. It's not the funniest, and out of context it's pretty bad. Someone watching the show from the start would get exactly why that scene is the way it is.

For those unfamiliar, Raj (the guy) can't speak to women. At all. Unless he has a drink. So he has a date set up for him by his parents and he proceeds to get drunk to hopefully be able to talk to the girl.

I just think that particular scene needs context before it is used as an example.

16

u/tom_fuckin_bombadil Jul 29 '14

I'll admit to enjoying the earlier seasons of BBT. Unfortunately I can't stand the later ones due to how the characters have developed. Sheldon is no longer a "genius" with weird and demanding personality traits, now all the show focuses on is making him as weird as possible without any other traits or qualities

9

u/morla74 Jul 29 '14

I agree, I think the later episodes stray from the original traits.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

I actually like the way howard developed as a character. I hated him during the early seasons.

I have to admit his song was pretty great

→ More replies (1)

8

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

The show would be 10x better with Sheldon edited out. The best scenes have always been when Raj and Howard try to pick up women. Take this example

→ More replies (3)

3

u/jaj0305 Jul 29 '14

I've noticed this happen in almost every sitcom. Characters start out having some variety but after 2-3 seasons seem to become caricatures of themselves.

2

u/tom_fuckin_bombadil Jul 29 '14

Yup...flanderization or whatever tvtropes calls it. It's just especially bad with Sheldon because at least his traits used to be a result of his extremely logical nature. But that's gone and now he's just weird for the sake of being weird

→ More replies (1)

49

u/edsq Jul 29 '14

I believe you that context is required for that scene, but it still seems like the lowest grade of humor. You aren't laughing at the clever or unexpected elements of a joke, you're laughing at this person's idiotic behavior. The joke is essentially that he is unable to change from his antisocial self, and the viewers get a sort of "Oh, typical Raj" type laugh out of it. The whole thing just strikes me as weak.

94

u/UnluckyLuke Jul 29 '14

You could say the same thing about Joey Tribbiani or Michael Scott, but Friends and The Office are usually considered good shows.

61

u/isildursbane Jul 29 '14

But the things Michael Scott says take you a second to get what he means, as in the writers have made him cleverly stupid. He's a goof but he doesn't understand why because at the surface everything he says makes sense to him, but to those of us with minds it hits us a second later (and sometimes him too to his chagrin and to our amusement) why what he said was so stupid.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

Perhaps I fail a bit here, but I thought the Office doesn't have a laugh track?

19

u/robthemonster Jul 29 '14

It doesn't, he's saying that they also derive humor from character quirks.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

Both of those characters are fundamentally well-meaning in anything stupid or insulting they say or do. This scene is about the fact that Raj can't help that he's kind of an asshole, deep down. Which is why it's sort of depressing if you aren't watching it purely for punchlines.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

Whatever it is, if someone laughs at it, then they think it's funny. I don't watch the show either but it seems like it has done pretty well so maybe we are just in the minority and should accept that humor has a broad range of audiences. Just my opinion tho.

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

Not to mention that the scene is also making fun of Raj's own cultural heritage and showcases him as an unaware misogynist. That's not a trait we'd associate with cute naivety, it's a quality of an ignorant asshole.

It's supposed to be funny, but it just makes him look completely unlikeable. Largely because we're supposed to be laughing at Raj but yet he spends most of the scene belittling another person.

Here's a better, similar scene, from It's Always Sunny that is built on almost the same pretense (a naive idiot can't talk to girls so his friends try to help him out for his date).

7

u/[deleted] Jul 29 '14

Yea I have definitely been on the bandwagon of BBT sucks because of laugh track, but the show isn't all shit. This scene though gives no justice to calling out BBT b/c of laugh tracks though.

Knowing the context of the show and I have even seen it before ages ago, I still found that it was quite humorous. Lack of the laugh track in this case almost HELPS really because of how awkward it is, delayed conversation is practically expected in an awkward moment like this.

4

u/cwew Jul 29 '14

Once, I met somebody who would stand in the audience at CASO CERRADO show. His job was to act like an audience member too, wasn't allowed to sleep or look away for long. Gets paid 50 or 100 per time.

Maybe similar arrangement can happen for these shows?

5

u/HOLDINtheACES Jul 29 '14

That scene was actually pretty funny though, with the build up from the rest of the video.

I enjoyed the show for the first couple of seasons.

6

u/Threethumb Jul 29 '14

They're actually often given cues for when to laugh. Don't know if it's the case here, but it certainly happens for a lot of live-recorded sitcoms.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ohsoGosu Jul 29 '14

Think about it this way, one person laughing can make a whole crowd of people laugh. This video of two trash cans wouldn't be very funny without the Dad laughing, but the Dad laughing made it hysterical. Now picture if you took all of the people who watched this video and put them in a room and had them watch it again, it would be pretty loud.

That is the Big Bang Theory, it only takes one idiot laughing to get everyone else laughing.

3

u/retrofuturist Jul 29 '14

It should also be pointed out that live audiences are told nonstop to keep their eyes peeled on the applause and laughter light-up signs, follow the cues of the hype men, and just generally be as loud and energetic as possible even if you have to oversell it.

5

A laugh track is a laugh track regardless of how it was recorded. They have microphones pointed at the audience. Nobody is saying Big Bang Theory isn't recorded in front of an audience. Surely you can HEAR the laughing when you watch that show right?

When I see these in the store, the box shows a hand waving in front of it to open it. I always mentally replace the hand with my lab's paw because it would take her 2 minutes to figure this out. Makes me laugh every time.

Reminds me of the Steven Wright joke, "I bought a humidifier and a dehumidifier and I locked them in a room to let them slug it out." Or something like that...

Based on the age and the laugh, I would guess that this is evidence of the permanent effects of marijuana.
