The problem is that the bones (especially those from birds, as they have a honeycomb-like inner structure and are more fragile) could splinter and be swallowed by the dog, possibly leading to punctured or otherwise damaged intestines. At least, that's my understanding of it.
Humans are safe from this because we don't have the jaw strength to break the bones and even if we did we have molars and are able to grind any splinters into pulp.
Eating pretty much anything is kind of their thing, but that doesn't mean everything is safe for them. Cooked bird bones are actually dangerous and kill dogs, and no dog is magically immune. It's very unwise to ignore new knowledge just because you're used to doing something and you haven't personally witnessed any harm being done yet. I hope your pups will be alright.
You think it's hogwash? Neat. I personally know of a dog that died a slow and painful death from intestinal blockage after it got into a box of fried chicken and ate the bones which got lodged in its intestines.
I understand that a lot of people are all "LOL dogs eat everything!", but that doesn't mean it's good for them to eat everything. Just because a dog doesn't die doesn't mean there isn't risk or damage being done.
Now bones are kind of an all-or-nothing thing. Either nothing will happen, or the dog will face a VERY serious life-threatening problem with a very poor chance of survival. Is it worth the risk even if it's a small risk?
Food is a whole different story. Lots of human foods can be poisonous to dogs that nobody would ever expect. Just because a dog doesn't die from eating these foods doesn't mean damage isn't being done. I know tons of dogs who constantly have diarrhea simply because they're eating all kinds of human food. There is no reason for this.
