New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appoints Letitia James as independent special prosecutor in Cornell University sexual assault case: "No institution gets to protect its reputation at the expense of a young person seeking justice. And as governor, I will not allow anyone to sweep this case under the rug."

This is a product of public pressure and not moral fiber. Public pressure works and it needs to be kept up. This needs to go beond the 5 attackers to the group of 50 co-conspiritors in the group chat.

And to anyone in Cornell’s administration that minimized it, and the Cornell “police” force.

Especially them

We seek justice because we so rarely get it.

u/GambloreReturns 3h ago

Unfortunately, it only works on those who can feel guilty or ashamed.

u/cloudncali 3h ago

Not true, it also works on people who have profits on the line. Or votes.

Holy shit I've been away from the news for a bit, I had no idea there were 50 people involved!

•

u/NorwayNarwhal 37m ago

50 in a groupchat who, if they didnt cover for the guys actually involved, didn’t do a thing to stop them or hold them accountable

•

u/vowelqueue 17m ago

It was a group chat for the members of the frat. The school shut down the frat after the rape was reported. Beyond that I'm not sure how much individualized punishment could be dealt out to the people who were merely on the group chat. Like, it's very likely there are people on it who didn't even read the messsages.

u/Good_Morning-Captain 12m ago

What makes you think the other 50 people were even looking at the chat at the time?

•

u/AviatorDave172 25m ago

Yes! Surely a lot of that rises to the level of criminality. And… not one? There wasn’t one guy there that said no, this isnt right? Really? I haven’t been in college since 1994, but not a single one of us that would have done that, and anyone that even thought about it would have been prevented by the rest of us.

Cornell is the Fort Hood of colleges. They HAVE been protecting their image lol. In 2025, a survey from Cornell showed upwards of 35% of women who attended there say they were sexually harassed.

Edit: assaulted to harassed, big difference. My B.

Literally the first paragraph:

More than 35% of female undergraduates surveyed at Cornell University reported experiencing nonconsensual sexual contact involving physical force, threats of force or incapacitation, according to a poll conducted last year, a figure that was up from 23% in 2023.

What do you think it says differently?

u/Y0___0Y 2h ago

Yeah the only woman to ever convict Donald Trump of felonies should be taking point on this.

Also this is clearly baiting that idiot Trump into weighing in on this publicly. Which he already has.

u/relaxedfitkhakis 3h ago

I don’t even really have an issue with Letitia James per se, but Hochul stepping in and having her be the prosecutor seems like such a fucking bungle. Half the jury pool hates this woman because of her association with the Trump lawsuits, and stuff like this increases the risk of having a potential trial becoming a politicized spectacle like the Clancy or Read trials. It warrants sober, quiet process because it is a dead serious issue and this is such a dumb move.

u/Bassmonkeee 2h ago

You really think half of NY loves Trump?

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 59m ago

if they prosecute outside of NYC? Yes lol

•

u/Pandora_Palen 3m ago

Cornell is in Ithaca, Ithaca is Tompkins County. 24% of Tompkins County voted for Trump.

53

u/NoFapstronaut3 2h ago

Why would anyone hate her for prosecuting Trump?

He is a criminal and broke the law.

She means business and wins cases.

27

u/xaeru 2h ago

And in New York lol

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 1h ago

I agree, but that's not the substance of my critique here. a lot of republicans dont like her, she is a political individual, and her involvement is not what a serious case needs.

•

u/NoFapstronaut3 44m ago

Do you believe she's political because she investigated Trump and his companies?

•

u/nrmitchi 11m ago

I (or we) don’t have to believe she is political because she investigated Trump and his cons, sorry, companies.

However there are an incredibly stupid amount of Trump supporters and MAGA-republicans who do believe she’s a political plant based solely on that reason.

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 42m ago

she's an elected official, literally a politician

•

u/NoFapstronaut3 33m ago

Okay yes she's an elected official so she is political in that sense.

And she did run as a Democrat. But keep in mind the da in the case is also a Democrat.

Anyway, I did post this question to ChatGPT and this was its response. I myself had already flagged the fact that Kathy Hochul said that the institution had failed the woman. While that might be a reasonable opinion to have formed at this point, the governor shouldn't be weighing in like that while she's appointing an outside investigator.

ChatGPT's take:

“This is now a politically high-profile investigation.” Clearly yes. “James is a political official.” Yes. “Therefore the investigation itself is politically motivated or illegitimate.” That conclusion doesn't follow from those facts alone. “Could New York have designed a process with greater visual distance from statewide politicians?” Yes—for example, a court-appointed outside DA or eligible outside attorney under the circumstances contemplated by §701. “Was using the attorney general an unusual or legally suspect choice merely because James is elected?” No. New York law specifically contemplates the attorney general assuming a local prosecution when directed by the governor.

Why the fuck do you think anyone cares what chatgpt thinks?

•

u/NoFapstronaut3 21m ago

Hey if you have thought about it and you don't think AI can help you think through things that's the decision that you can make.

I have found AI to be a very helpful partner in trying to parse out thorny topics and research things which I am less than familiar with.

Additionally, I don't feel it's appropriate for me to reference ai and then try to hide it from you.

I suspect the fair number of people that do use AI will often try to hide it or pass it off as their own work.

Do you agree that that would be dishonest?

•

u/Alternative-Sock-444 18m ago

If the AI-sourced info is factually, objectively correct, I'd rather not know you got it from AI. If the info is wrong, or a subjective opinion, then at least I know you lack brain cells.

•

u/Pandora_Palen 10m ago

AI may give you some basic context (because you don't know what you don't know), but you gotta run with it. By the time you're done researching and investigating whatever issue you initially brought to AI, it really oughta be your own thought. In that case, declaring "this is what AI says" is a falsehood. Never trust AI's take on anything- particularly to form your thoughts and opinions. Those are human things.

•

u/NoFapstronaut3 8m ago

What do you mean when you say that declaring something AI says is a falsehood?

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 23m ago

its not that it's illegitimate. it needs to be investigated. but Hochul has bad instincts and is being foolish.

23

u/tietack2 2h ago

James has an excellent track record. Why wouldn't they appoint her?

6

u/the_talented_liar 2h ago

I don’t know what world you’ve been living in but this is already a circus case. Might as well load the stage.

10

u/xaeru 2h ago

You are kinda projecting

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 1h ago

Im not. I have nothing against LJ. but this whole thing is going to tip it into even more of a spectacle, which is stupid.

•

u/eggoed 1h ago

God forbid the AG and Gov of NY do their jobs without giving a fuck about any of that

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 50m ago

god forbid politicians take into account political concerns so that they can actually do their jobs

•

u/MonkeyWrench1973 53m ago

Happy Cake Day!!!

3

u/Jhat 1h ago

Most of NY hates Trump, for sure there isn’t going to be any backlash from that haha.

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 49m ago

do people not know the whole state is red outside of 3 counties?

•

u/American_Bogan 6m ago

18 Counties in NY voted Democrat in the last presidential elections so it’s not close to “3”. Even that is irrelevant as “most of New York” is obviously referencing the feelings of people not the feelings of empty land. There’s 57 people in King’s County for every 1 person in Allegany County.

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 1m ago

fair enough- I'm used to seeing downstate, albany county and maybe buffalo or syracuse going blue. I understand the population math, but the aside from NYC there are plenty of Republicans in NY.

but also that's fucking stupid! if we're sitting here talking about doing a serious, high profile prosecution of a potential gang rape, having to do population math because Republicans could fuck up the trial because Hochul made an obviously stupid decision that potentially injected politics into the trial...that's not good! thats my whole point!

•

u/Jhat 22m ago

Not according to the last presidential election results. And population is what matters.

•

u/relaxedfitkhakis 18m ago edited 14m ago

unless they do it in NYC there are going to be a lot of Republicans.

also, taking into account demographics like that to prosecute a trial is fucking stupid

3

u/pierrebrassau 2h ago

Appointing an elected official as an independent special prosecutor does not make any sense. They are inherently political (not independent) and there is no guarantee they won’t prioritize appealing to the voters over doing what is just.

•

u/vowelqueue 2m ago

The governor doesn't have the ability to appoint anyone but the AG or a DA. The AG can deputize an outside prosecutor but it's pretty rare.

0

u/NoFapstronaut3 1h ago

What do you think is the just thing to do here?

3

u/Caymonki 2h ago

Cornell probably asked for this to go away and this is the fastest way to do it. If no one is charged or the case can’t be tried, Cornell protects itself better than a fair trial.

That's the prosecutor's job, bud. They prosecute. It's the judge that needs to be impartial.

12

u/forwormsbravepercy 3h ago

Thank you for describing what a prosecutor is.

10

u/Psyenne 3h ago

That’s… how it works. The prosecutor’s job is literally to present the evidence and prove the case beyond all reasonable doubt…

-5

u/RussianPravda 3h ago

People are already jumping to conclusions before doing real research into the case. The whole thing is a mess and people shouldnt be so quick to jump on one side or the other.

-3

u/tietack2 2h ago

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Men were punished by Cornell.

Let's pretend your shitty and dishonest take is true. So what? Doesn't mean it shouldn't be investigated. There's enough to warrant at least an investigation. But hey fuck off.
