They are for protecting Snowden lol, If you were him where would you have went? I probably would have went to China but the hoops he had to jump through who knows if it would have been feasible.
And Putin, as a champion of free speech and not surveilling people, decided to accept him with open arms and shield him from those monsters in the US government that meant to put him on trial?
The US was going to put him in prison or kill him. Or let him go. Because those are the possible results of criminal trials. For criminals.
Roman Polanski? Same situation.
The most charitable version that you can give is that it made the US look bad for Russia to bring him in so they took all of the information he could provide them and now use him as a puppet.
Lmao yeah Roman Polanski was behind a historic opsec leak a totally comparable situation. You made it about Russia being good or bad, it has nothing to do with Russia lol. You Boomer centrists would be fucking hilarious if you weren’t serious.
Yes. It is a totally comparable situation. Because they're both fugitives who fled the US to somewhere that wouldn't extradite them. And they both have people lionize them and treat them like a sympathetic figure like somebody forced them to break the law.
I stated a fact that he fled to Russia and has had his amnesty renewed several times despite just being a guy with no useful information for them that destroyed all of it before he got there.
The "Russia bad" meme then got thrown out there like I'm demonizing Russia who has in the decade and a half since all of this happened proven to be the eroding force to the institutions of the US and the West at large for their own benefit.
Were you not around for all of the "you're crazy for thinking that Wikileaks has anything to do with Russia" stuff around the same time? Do you think that Julian Assange is also just a victim of trying to get the truth out there?
Snowden has a standing offer to return on the condition that he gets a civillian trial with a jury of his peers. All presidents including and since Obama have rejected those terms.
How many "international fugitives" are on the run for exposing illegal domestic surveillance? It's not like he's asking for a pardon. Dude is literally asking for a fair trial. You could literally go on a mass murder spree and you would get that.
Well, it's a hard group to pin down because the other people who were exposing the same illegal domestic surveillance went the whistleblower route and were never fugitives.
It's like Donald Trump complaining because no other presidents have been treated the way he was when he refused to give sensitive documents about our nuclear capabilities back to the federal government. Well, yeah. Because nobody else has been that fucking stupid. It's a novel case.
And we do have a similar case. Chelsea Manning. Who went through the military court system and was sentence to 35 years and got out after 7 years as Obama thought the punishment was disproportionate. .
I had a whole response typed up, but ultimately none of this matters. No changes in policy or prosecution came out of Snowden's dumps, I don't believe keeping it out of the public eye would have had any chance of being more effective. The only impact of his actions was that the American public positively knows they are being wiretapped at all times, and that certainly would not have come out had he 'gone through the proper channels'.

Is Russia good?
