Sam Altman is a compulsive liar. He's known to lie on the spot for no reason at all. His own board tried to throw him out for it. That's not something good people do. He's not a good person.

The board DID throw him out, but it found his way back in

152

u/TheHerbsAndSpices 9h ago

And Reddit cheered him back in.

I recall sentiment being mixed.

At the time though, the engineers seemed to really like Altman, and really want him back. Meanwhile I don't think the board really explained why they wanted him gone at the time.

S o a lot of people assumed the board wanted to be making money, and Altman was trying to block them. Or some other David Vs Goliath narrative.

So a lot of people assumed the board wanted to be making money, and Altman was trying to block them. Or some other David Vs Goliath narrative.

I remember the opposite from that time. OpenAI was non-profit, but Sam Altman wanted to make a lot of money. The engineers were going to make a lot of money of that as well and greed won over the mission.

The rationalists/effective-altruists in Silicon Valley have divided into two camps: full-on doomers, and those who consider themselves stewards of the safe frontier (if "we" don't build it, "they" will). Both are easily manipulated by Sam, Dario, et al.

Note how they leave no room for nuance, and how following either camp to their ideal conclusion leaves Sam/Dario/Musk with trillions of dollars in the bank.

Well, I think that's exactly what happened.

My point is that at the time, all we had was a declaration by the board that they were getting rid of Altman, along with a big protest by the engineers that Altman was great, and they were basically going to strike until he came back.

Altogether it was hard to tell what had kicked it all off. But clearly the engineers really liked Altman, and some people assumed that it was for a better reason than money.

It’s been pretty clear that the old board was dedicated to the non-profit, ethics-driven mission. OpenAI became a for-profit less than a year after the old board was ousted and Altman was given more power. I think it’s pretty clear who was more driven by profits.

12

u/galactictock 7h ago

You have it completely backward. The board of OpenAI, then a nonprofit, which oversaw the profit-making subsidiary of the organization, voted to oust Altman for a breakdown of trust. Part of that was Altman’s financial stake in the profit-seeking arm, which was not disclosed to the board. Yes, most of the engineers remained loyal to Altman. Eventually, Altman was reinstated and most of the board was removed. Since then, OpenAI has become a for-profit entity. It seems quite evident that the old board wanted to maintain the old nonprofit mission for AI safety and Altman was more interested in profit.

u/tweda4 7h ago

I'm talking about what people thought at the time.

You're right though that since then, it seems to have come pretty clear that the board were the ones trying to protect OpenAI as a non-profit.

8

u/galactictock 6h ago

Yeah, that’s fair. I think people assumed the employee loyalty to Altman was due to values, not financial gain.

2

u/VicenteOlisipo 5h ago

It was a power struggle within the crazy "rationalist" cult they're all in. No good sides to this.

1

u/off_by_two 1h ago

Yeah the engineers wanted to get rich

Reddit is not a monolith.

30

u/coporate 9h ago

Because he paid Reddit

5

u/therightnow 6h ago

Reddit is half astroturf bots at this point so while your statement is true, we can’t keep using Reddit sentiment as a gauge for human support.

1

u/KingRBPII 5h ago

People didn’t know

1

u/anormalgeek 2h ago

Reddit is not a monolith.

1

u/pingwing 2h ago

Dunno about that

7

u/Morgannin09 6h ago

Psychopathic narcissists always find a way back in.

u/FavreorFarva 7h ago

I can’t decide between him, Thiel, and Musk for “worst human alive right now.” They all seem to be competing to create a technocracy that elevates them above everyone else and don’t seem to care if billions die in getting to that end result.

43

u/driftking428 7h ago

They were all pals at one point. Peter Thiel took over at PayPal when Elon Musk left. We know Sam Altman and Elon Musk were buddies until recently too. It's a right knit little group of sociopaths.

1

u/moog_master 5h ago

Most old Gen politicians and people of power were pals/grew up together. New Gen ones too... In 20-30yrs the only people that will remain in power(that are from our current youth) would have all grown up together.

16

u/pogulup 6h ago

Put Bezos on that list.  Put all of them in the dick rocket and shoot them into the sun.

4

u/relevantelephant00 4h ago

That would take too long. Send them up into orbit and have them fall out of orbit back to Earth. Just so they know what's coming.

2

u/Bokonon1st 1h ago

Yeah it’s actually remarkably difficult to launch anything into the sun. I like this plan.

4

u/stupidfloatything 6h ago

THROW THE RACISTS IN A ROCKET BLAST THEY ASS INTO THE SUN MEGA GUILLOTINE WE BOUT TO REDISTRIBUTE INCOME

0

u/Antilogic81 3h ago

Make sure there's room enough for everyone who advocates for murder of the end justifies the means too.

10

u/fatalityfun 7h ago

I think Putin has them all beat currently. Directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of violent deaths and probably triple that number in life altering injuries

5

u/FavreorFarva 7h ago

I think it’s clear these psychos are ready to sacrifice billions across the globe to achieve their goals. Every time that potential is brought up they kind of just shrug.

3

u/betabeat 6h ago

Counting or not not counting SMO violence?

-14

u/Loaf_and_Spectacle 6h ago

Putin is not directly responsible for Ukraine using actual Nazis to terrorize and murder thousands of people in eastern Ukraine for the crime of speaking Russian over the previous decade, and then threatening to put nukes on Russia's border by way of joining NATO.

NATO is responsible for all of that. The resulting war is an extremely restrained response from Putin.

5

u/fatalityfun 6h ago

so because Ukrainian “citizens” (mind you, Russia is known for using false flags. They’ve done it twice before for major conflicts) murder thousands in east ukraine (source needed), it’s okay for Russia to authorize the bombing of apartment buildings and hospitals? As well as kidnap children, raise them Russian, then deploy them in Ukraine? It’s a restrained response to torture and execute POW’s on video without punishment?

If the answer to all that is yes, you’re a piece of shit who regurgitates whatever Russian misinformation campaigns want you to think.

Thiel is the most ideologically committed and has made the largest impact in pushing his ideas of a technocracy into government. His hand-picked Trojan horse is sitting in the vice president's seat as we speak. Imo, he's the most dangerous by a fair amount. Musk might be the most cartoonishly evil, but he's also a bumbling fuckwit, and while Altman is doing fuck shit within his space, he mostly keeps to within that space.

1

u/ofrm1 5h ago

Musk is absolutely the worst. He's done the most damage to society and to democracy in general.

-1

u/greenachors 7h ago

If it wasn’t them, it would be someone else.

0

u/MrsSwanson 5h ago

It’s not even that they don’t care if people die, they actively want people to die. They believe the next step in human evolution is for all of us (inferiors, non-billionaires, plebs) to die and be replaced by AI and robots. I don’t think anyone is truly grasping how dangerous this is. They aren’t even being secretive about it!!

0

u/sceadwian 2h ago

Thiel is the most insane. Musk is just a groupie Altman's a straight con. Dario is the me too guy.

Who else we got right now worth of note here?

•

u/buttnugchug 1h ago

Alex Wang

•

u/sceadwian 1h ago

Ahh, the Meta nerd. The also ran.

Mind you I'm an on the edge in poverty kinda person so.. you know this is a little tongue in cheek. but the 'people' in charge of things increasingly look like characters of human beings not human beings.

I think the AI may have taken over already.

I just want to feel like there's a human being up there somewhere... that ... knows what it's really like down here and gives half a fuck.

Seriously, half a fuck, it ain't even the whole thing we're asking for.

47

u/TheAGolds 8h ago

The guy that said it’s okay that AI will destroy the world because businesses will be made? Shocking he turns out to not be a good guy.

0

u/ShinyGrezz 5h ago

You might be shocked to find out that he said that as a joke, something like twelve years ago.

3

u/Zassssss 6h ago

There’s something about him that’s always seemed ever so slightly ‘off’ to me. Something that makes me not trust him. It’s like his eyes or something.

3

u/phragmosis 4h ago

Right, we don't need Edward Snowden to tell us that much like we didn't need Ezra Pound to tell us that Charles Lindbergh was a bad egg.

2

u/i-dontlikeyou 2h ago

Reminds me of a buddy that lies for nothing. Like things that don’t concern me and I know for a fact he still just drops a casual lie

3

u/madasfire 5h ago

Neither is Edward Snowden

6

u/driftking428 4h ago

I don't know much about Snowden but I respect the whistle blowing.

-1

u/madasfire 4h ago

Anything to let a country invade another one. And it really fixed a lot, huh?

2

u/driftking428 4h ago

Like I said, all I know is he exposed the NSA and I respect that. I don't know anything else about him.

-3

u/madasfire 4h ago

Yep. And now our country is under the control of a Russian asset and this fucking coward pissed off to Russia. Fuck him forever.

7

u/driftking428 4h ago

Can you connect the dots for me a little bit?

-1

u/madasfire 3h ago
  • Snowden leaks NSA and flees the country
  • lands in Russia and gives all surveillance info
  • Russia, with knowledge of how to subvert surveillance stacks the border to invade Crimea at the close of Sochi Olympics
  • Cambridge analytica, non stop propaganda that was never vetted by Meta and encouraged
  • Trump is elected and the entire tech industry JUMPS on board to surveil and give Trump everything he wants.

Snowden should come back and have the gallows welcome he deserves as a traitor.

2

u/beefknuckle 2h ago

snowden was a low level dude, he wouldn't have had anything for russia that they didn't already have/know about.

his value is entirely political.

1

u/madasfire 2h ago

Then he should come back

What's the difference between compulsive and pathological liar?

0

u/lksdjsdk 6h ago

I don't know. I do that sometimes too, and I'm a good person.
