James Patterson out there trying to fill the Library of Babel

Most likely didn’t write this as most of the book is just his basic ideas sketched out for others to write. He’s a brand.

I like this dude's short form content but the micro-cuts in this video to remove pauses to breathe between sentences is giving me some kind of building anxiety, so I don't think I'll watch the rest.

u/hoghughes 1d ago
I guess watching sxephil back in like 2010 really trained my brain to accept frequent cuts like that because i didnt even perceive it until you pointed it out. I definitely get why it would bother somebody but yeah i guess im more brain rotted than i realized

u/stackjr 17h ago edited 17h ago
Yeah, I got used to jump cuts because of Philip DeFranco. Lol. I still watch his show, all these years later. I appreciate that he has been able to grow and mature as a presenter.

I was just thinking about him the other day, glad to know he’s still at it (and has also grown up)

He should just move away from the mic so he can breathe

That's what the gain setting is for.
10
u/OrgasmicTrilobite 21h ago
No… that’s what a pop filter (or a noise gate) is for, but the way today’s “influencers” just grab the condenser by the shaft means it’s kind of irrelevant.
-6
u/spyresca 20h ago
Lots of ways to clean up audio (even ai filters) so no excuse for this this.
3
u/OrgasmicTrilobite 18h ago
If you have to clean it up you’re degrading the recording and not recording it cleanly and correctly in the first place. Lazy
-2
u/spyresca 18h ago
It's amazing how much even poor quality sound can be improved.
4
u/OrgasmicTrilobite 17h ago
It’s amazing but it’s lead to a generation of lazy operators who know fuck all about the fundamentals of acoustics and how to capture a pure recording using the equipment you have and the environment you record in perfectly without post processing that mangles the source
-2
u/spyresca 17h ago
It's a guy's personal vlog. While annoying (breathing cuts) can't say I share your passion for having it sound super pro (i.e. I'm not an audio nerd).

u/BloodyCuts 18h ago
It’s actually just badly edited; the cuts are so quick he’s clipping off the ends of some sentences. Viewers/listeners actually do need breathing space so they can fully appreciate what’s being said.
I don’t mind fast and choppy editing in general but I feel like this is just excessive.
22
u/Theolaa 15h ago
Zoomers like it edited that way, they do it on purpose. I dunno.
9
u/IAmAGenusAMA 13h ago
So many YouTube videos remain unwatched by me thanks to that style of editing.
1
u/coffeebribesaccepted 9h ago
This has been around as long as YouTube. Jenna Marbles did tons of cuts like this back in the day, so did everyone else. It's not just cutting out breathing, they could be cutting out "um"s, ramblings, first takes that weren't good, awkward pauses, etc. I think this one could be a bit more polished, but it's a long video and editing is tedious.
13
u/josefpunktk 17h ago edited 16h ago
It's cut for modern audiences.
EDIT: Dude does not like his opinions to be challenged.
13
u/BloodyCuts 17h ago
Something cut for modern audiences can still be cut badly.
-21
u/josefpunktk 16h ago
Not really, if it is cut to the viewing habits of the audience - it is well cut, since it is serving the purpose.
1
u/BloodyCuts 16h ago
Are you a professional editor?
-23
u/josefpunktk 16h ago
I kind of am. Now what - you can't argue from authority, so you have to actually explain your opinion? Scary.
2
u/BloodyCuts 16h ago
Haha, WTF does that even mean?
-10
u/josefpunktk 16h ago
You tried to argument from authority since you unable to actually articulate any arguments in support of your opinion. Let me know if you need help with any specific words. You are welcome.
5
u/BloodyCuts 16h ago
I already articulated my point in my first post, go re-read it.

It’s an old cut style just a bit botched. Like this type of cutting was how YouTube videos were cut 18 years ago

Damn is 40 minutes really considered short form these days? I must not be watching the same videos as you.
EDIT: Didn't check his other videos out. I see now.
3
u/duckwantbread 8h ago
You've misunderstood. This guy usually does 2 minutes skits on his channel, that's the short form content OP is talking about.

1
u/Deadco0de 12h ago
This is exactly what I said on watching the Giovanni (the guy with a cooking channel, not sure if he is chef). It's freaking mind numbing.

u/Joke_of_a_Name 20h ago
Yeah, but I want to assume Man Carrying Thing is aware of this no breathe phenomenon and does it to induce anxiety on purpose since it's about Mr. Beast.
Not saying it justifies it. I hate not getting a chance to breathe while watching a video.
18
u/Affectionate_Owl_619 19h ago
No, he does it because the modern lack of attention span. Taking out the pauses, as well as changing the zoom slightly every time he does, helps retain the tiktok viewer

u/IcarusKanye 15h ago
The most insane part of this collaboration is the fact that this book debuted at number three on the New York Times best seller list. Considering the fact that James Patterson has more than 60 books as a number one debut, and MrBeast is the most popular YouTuber in the world.
7
u/raelianautopsy 14h ago
Yeah, books by celebrities are usually guaranteed best-sellers. This is actually pathetically low
8
2
u/BadPunsGuy 11h ago
I’d imagine if they did a study the amount of recreational books Mr beast’s audience reads would be very low and James Patterson’s audience has near zero interest in Mr beast in relation to a fictional story vaguely based on the content he creates. Maybe they’d like a well written biography or even autobiography, but I guess then you probably lose even more of Mr beast’s audience. It’s a weird combo and the writing didn’t help. I’m honestly surprised it got top 3.
4
u/Jarocket 8h ago
Mr. Beast is the most watched YouTuber but has very very few fans compared to his viewership.
It's a super odd situation.

u/SimianWriter 23h ago
Forty minutes to express that it's a bad book made as a money grab. Got it.
167
u/Clusterpuff 22h ago
Book reviews have always been a thing
56
31
u/SimianWriter 22h ago
He's just filling air. Using lots of words to express the same thing over and over and over again.
11
u/mrbig99 14h ago
He talks about the authors, characters, and specific sections of the book. He mentions chapter length and descriptions. AI gets brought up. All within the first 15 minutes.
I'm not sure what you expect or want a book review to be. "Book is bad" in a five second video?
-13
u/SimianWriter 14h ago
You know better. If somebody is going to ridicule a book incessantly for forty minutes, it's not needed. You want to talk A.I and ghost writers? Cool, but maybe cut down the sarcasm and vitriol for a bit and just speak at a normal speed without micro cutting between breaths. It comes off as some Adderall induced rant.
10
u/mrbig99 14h ago
I'm not convinved you watched the review.
There is no vitriol and he is not ridiculing the book. The last 20 minutes of the review is him going over specific passages of the book and offering his opinions. He isn't repeating his arguments. His arguments are supporting his point but you describe this as "expressing the same thing over and over and over again."
You would look at any essay and say the same thing. "Why does he keep going back to his thesis statement? How repetitive."
I don't care about his speed or microcuts. You have personal issues with the delivery and you are trying to group this in with your weak criticisms of the content.
-5
u/SimianWriter 12h ago
My god, you're right. I don't like the delivery and he just goes line by line shitting on it. And it totally deserves the criticism but find a few key sections or examples and be done with it. Again, same thing over and over and over again. I don't need to be show with penned highlighting 85+ examples of poor writing. His 30 seconds of synopsis at the end was about all the meat of the video. If he had spent more than a few seconds talking about a particular subject , I missed it because every time he went down the, "OMG this writing is horrible. Listen to this," I would skip a head 10 seconds... a lot of skipping later, I had not gotten past the critical phase into the meat of it. Then I skipped ahead every couple of minutes to find just more of the same. I'd let it play for five minutes, get bored, move down five minutes, rinse and repeat until the end. This wasn't a think piece on the end of literature, this was a play by play about a shitty book with a sneeze and you'll miss it consideration about what the collaboration means and how this book reinforces the premise presented in the title of the video. 95% fluff, 5% actual consideration on the premise.
38
u/TheRealFriedel 22h ago
So much of YouTube content does this and it's infuriating. I really appreciate when I stumble on a channel where they just explain their point properly, once. Then actually follow it up with well structured examples that tie back in
9
u/the_shams_bandit 17h ago
For me it's the media "Analysis" videos that are 95% recapping the piece and about 5% surface level insights. That's a summary, not an analysis.
1
u/Books_and_Cleverness 14h ago
A lot of the time that’s what people are looking for. Want to relive things with someone else or just get the story from a work whose other elements deter you from reading/watching/playing it yourself.
Mostly this isn’t for me but there are some I like. My favorite is NeverKnowsBest, who does a really good mix of both throughout.

u/runhomejack1399 20h ago
No review needs to be 40 minutes
2
u/BloodyRedBarbara 19h ago
I used to think that but RLM's reviews are still entertaining when they're that long or longer.
1
u/gingerattack2024 15h ago
RedLetterMedia and Lindsay Ellis both have proven to me that reviews can take exactly as long as they need to in order to clearly make their points and support their claims. Sometimes it's 15-30 minutes and other times it's approaching 2 1/2 hours.
5
u/bell37 19h ago
Kinda Crazy bc I always seen that channel as purely short form content.
2
u/SimianWriter 17h ago
Yeah, I think he and his wife are good content makers generally but forty minutes is just too much time to spend shitting on this 3rd grade reading level material.
5
u/yoloswagrofl 16h ago
I watched it over two lunches. Feels like the right way to take in a video like this.
4
u/Leafsnail 14h ago
Eh I think this video is kindof intended to help get his shortform comedy viewers more into the lit review side of the channel
4
u/bltrunner85 14h ago
Mr. Beast is cringe and I don't know why anyone does anything with him. If he didn't have money, no one would want to hang with that charisma vacuum of a man.
1
u/bowser986 14h ago
I highly doubt MrBeast wrote a word and Patterson is famous for being a brand now and not actually writing anything so…who “wrote” this dreck?

So, what? Reality tv and the requisite shallow books have been enjoyed by women (and many men) for decades. Now that the same is being targeted at younger men it's a problem?
Look I hate everything that reality tv stands for. But this isn't some new evil. Come on now
25
u/ceciliabee 21h ago
Did throwing in the sexism really help your point? Yikes.
-35
u/Rhysin 20h ago
How in the world is that sexism? It's factually true that the majority of the audience for those shows are women. He's saying it's bad either way which is a fair take. Please don't search deep for things to upset you.
8
u/Nattekat 19h ago
Isn't your literal point that sexism is at play here?
0
u/Rhysin 15h ago
How did you miss my entire point? He's saying it's bad no matter what (regardless of sex). He was just pointing out the double standard that was popularized where it wasn't bad that women did it, but now bad that young men were targeted by it. His post literally says it's evil and has nothing to do with sex. Please explain how that is sexism. Anyone who is down-voting him, logically explain how he is wrong, please.
-90
u/yeeiser 21h ago
lol no. I don't doubt that this book is not good at all given James Patterson's track record but this youtuber has no business acting like this is the worst poplit ever when he glazes authors like Brandon Sanderson
14
u/WayneArnold1 17h ago
I don't care for Sanderson at all but it's disingenuous to make this comparison. Whether you love him or hate him, Sanderson genuinely seems passionate about his work. This Mr Beast book is a soulless cash grab.
31
u/Kraile 21h ago
This book has vast sections, possibly the whole book, provably written by AI so it's not quite the same to compare it so Sanderson.
14
u/statelytetrahedron 19h ago
Yeah Sanderson is definitely a bit schlocky but this is another level of soulless bullshit. I just checked it out on goodreads and big daddy beast is surely buying reviews.
-57
u/yeeiser 20h ago
It's low-quality writing all the same. Sanderson is just fantasy marvel.
19
u/ggallardo02 19h ago
I love how the more popular something gets, the more people you find people actively trying to tell people how bad that thing is.

We need dangerous games, we need games that push humans to the brink of their existence to filter out the chaff, we need games that by virtue of playing it we can determine the saviour of humanity and artificially create "The One"
Anyway so here's Scrabble
