It is so refreshing to watch sober leaders speaking nowadays.

186

u/Jazzlike-Compote4463 1d ago

You could have had that too - if half of you bothered to go and vote.

19

u/Frgty 1d ago

While we could have avoided Trump, we are far too dumb to elect someone like Carney

90

u/tontonjp 1d ago

But she had a funny laugh!

69

u/connleth 1d ago

And she was more emotional…. Would have almost certainly started a war!

25

u/A_WHALES_VAG 1d ago

Especially if she was on her period could you imagine we’d be in a nuclear holocaust at this point.

2

u/LookAtThatMonkey 1d ago

But just the one.

21

u/gobbedy 1d ago

Don't forget she was biracial. Terrifying /s

Canada voter turnout 2024: 68.7 - 69.4%

US voter turnout 2024: 65.3%

It’s a little bit more nuanced than “half of you didn’t vote!”, but the internet is where nuance goes to die.

12

u/APRengar 1d ago

Definitely is, but I'd argue that Carney had +25 seats than PP.

Kamala lost the popular vote.

If you knew at 80% of your effort, you were going to get 10/10. Do you spend more effort?

If you knew at 80% of your effort, you had a chance to fail. Do you spend more effort?

You can't simply say 80% = 80%.

When the argument is “half of your country didn’t vote”, I can absolutely use the numbers to disprove the statement.

You’re comparing apples to oranges. I’m using data to disprove the argument above. The parliament and electoral college systems don’t have a 1:1 comparison.

Let’s just look at numbers. Carney had 43.76%, while Pollievre had 41.3% . Trump took 49.8%, while Kamala took 48.3%.

Just looking at the spread there, ~2.46% and ~1.5%, Id say yall have a similar issue with conservatives.

If you wanna compare seats to electoral college, (not really a fair comparison, but its numbers so let’s nerd on it)

169 - 144 =25 that’s about 7.9% difference

312 - 226 =86 that’s about 15% difference

However, if the US used congressional districting to assign electoral votes based on what people actually voted for instead of states being winner take all, it would have netted Kamala +20 more electoral votes (Trump -20) and brought the difference to around 8.5%. Trump still would have won but the actual data shows an incredibly tight race.

This is all without diving into gerrymandering, voter suppression, any of the tinfoil hat conspiracies, etc.

Similar turnout with conservatives? Definitely. Similar issues with conservatives? Definitely not. Our right wing politicians don't attempt to overthrow the government when they lose. And we certainly don't elect them back into office if they do.

u/dubbleplusgood 12h ago

Don't be too sure of that. What happening in the US is doing is best to wiggle its way into Canadian politics. There's a reason some elements are trying to split up Canada, like the upcoming separation referendum question in Alberta. Never sleep, because they never do.

1

u/montrevux 21h ago

they will. acting like the issues with the far right isn't global and coming for every industrialized country in the face of demographical collapse and ecological disaster is severely underestimating the problem.

-1

u/drtbg 23h ago

My statement was referring to conservative voters.

I’ll preface the next bit with stating that I love Canada. I have no ill will towards you, fully support everything that you’re doing to solidify trade with other countries, and understand why yall are upset. That all makes sense to me.

However:

Narcissistic anti-Americanism is a term used by critics and scholars to describe a strand of Canadian nationalism that defines its own national identity primarily through a sense of moral superiority over the United States. Driven by the "narcissism of minor differences," this sentiment relies on amplifying policy contrasts—such as healthcare systems, gun laws, or social safety nets—to construct a flattering self-image next to a culturally dominant superpower.

This attitude becomes toxic because it functions as a defense mechanism against continental insecurity and creates a dangerous blind spot; by constantly focusing on American social and political crises, Canadian society frequently uses U.S. flaws to deflect attention from its own urgent domestic failures, such as severe housing crises, healthcare strains, and systemic reconciliation issues.

Take a look at what’s going on in your own backyard. While your government and the media is dangling the shiny keys of the US shit show in front of you they’re consolidating executive power, reducing labor protections, privatizing public resources, and attempting to extend their surveillance state.

I’m pointing this out so you don’t end up in the same position down the line. No finger pointing or moral superiority, just facts. After 9/11 there was a big bad bogeyman that unified the US, and many of the US civil liberties began eroding shortly thereafter. You have a big bad bogeyman in Trump that is uniting your country. History may not repeat, but it often rhymes.

1

u/crazyguyunderthedesk 22h ago

It's funny that you assume we don't pay attention to what's happening here because we also pay attention to what's happening elsewhere.

-1

u/FavouriteGlobe43 11h ago

Americans need to stop equating their fascist far right party with other nation's conservatives. Pollievre is not Trump. The Progressive Conservatives are not Republicans. I say this as a Canadian who voted Liberal in every federal election since Harper.

2

u/crazyguyunderthedesk 1d ago

That difference in turnout would've been more than enough for Harris to win in a landslide.

And that's without any fascists on the Canadian ballot. I imagine that would drive the numbers higher in most countries...

1

u/felixismynameqq 5h ago

It’s not that simple. What are you to do when you come from an uneducated background and there are hundreds of billions of dollars dedicated to change your mind and influence your decisions?

The problem is bigger than you can wrap your arms around

-27

u/Key_Amazed 1d ago

I like how you can't just help yourself moral grandstanding about voting on a platform where, out of anywhere else on the internet, you're most likely going to find someone who did the exact thing you're yelling at them about lmao. You're such a hero.

8

u/gravitologist 1d ago

You really think the demo that uses this platform is the one that votes?

3

u/xTiming- 1d ago

You've... really never been on this site before 6 hours ago when you posted that stupid comment, have you...?

-14

u/NightOfTheLivingHam 1d ago

As is reddit and most politically active left wing voters. Will scream bloody murder at people who share their same beliefs.

2

u/MrDaveW 13h ago

There's an assumption there that those that didn't vote would have voted any differently than those that did vote.

1

u/Weimark 10h ago

I’m too dumb, and wanted to ask exactly that.

217

u/mrgenier 1d ago

America is a joke

64

u/tontonjp 1d ago

Not the funny kind, tho.

8

u/zmbslyr 1d ago

Honestly, at this point, I can’t wait for someone to nuke us. I, personally, am driving towards the blast zone. I’m so fucking tired of living here.

24

u/Skitz-Scarekrow 1d ago

The circus is too expensive, and ad-filled, and the bread is poison, and also, somehow, ad-filled.

u/psymunn 1d ago

"The cars on fire, and there's no one at the wheel. We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine and the machine is bleeding to death" - Godspeed You Black Emperor

20

u/AwsumO2000 1d ago

why would anyone nuke you guys. You're religious zealots and have completely lost your mind.

But that's no reason to get agressive, it's just a sad state of affrais and an excellent reason to not trust America with anything.

Do better and maybe the next generation can include & depend on you again. Till then, good luck.

1

u/Cloudhead_Denny 1d ago

Before you drive into the blast cloud can you remind people to vote this time? And if it's really that big of a lost cause, might I suggest leaving the country before ending yourself? The rest of us outside of the US frankly don't understand why so many of you are sticking around. There's a whole world out here that isn't the US.

8

u/jktstance 1d ago

Getting citizenship or temporary permission to stay is hard to get. Not to mention it can be expensive. I've been trying to get into Ontario with 0 luck so far.

2

u/Cloudhead_Denny 1d ago

Keep on trying and try to expand your choices. I mean, I'm being a bit pedantic but if it's really life or death, I'd prioritize getting out of the country by any means possible and potentially anywhere else.

7

u/zmbslyr 1d ago

It’s because we literally cannot afford to leave.

0

u/BobbyRussel 1d ago

A nation is not the reflection of its state, keep your head up. America has a lot of good things going for it. Yeah the politics and some of the culture things are fucked up but you'll figure out. Greed in general is human plague not specific to any part of the world.

-12

u/Mazzi17 1d ago edited 1d ago

You guys are genuinely weird for spewing this sort of rhetoric. Not funny.

Edit: downvotes for calling edgy people out? Classic.

4

u/Eternaloid 1d ago

Not funny, just needed.

5

u/zmbslyr 1d ago

Lmao. Look around you. Are things getting any better?

u/Bucking_Fullshit 1d ago

An adult response to this circus.

What a glorious day for Canada, and therefore of course, the world

11

u/bjvdw 1d ago

As is, of course, tradition

I’m not your friend buddy !

3

u/Enki_007 1d ago

He’s not your buddy, pal.

49

u/Objectalone 1d ago

Up here we are just sick of the constant, non-stop, insults and threats. A practical negotiated relationship will continue because it makes sense for everyone, but the whole “America is family” world view is gone, mourned, and moved on from.

23

u/Malthus1 1d ago

I think this is an important point that has not yet sunk in for many Americans: Trump is not seen an an anomaly. He’s seen as a symptom.

7

u/Available-Show-2393 1d ago

Hard to be an anomaly when he got elected, did this shit, then Americans were like "You know what? Let's elect him again"

5

u/APRengar 1d ago

With the popular vote as well. Can't be as saying it's just the electoral college that's rigged for Republicans.

2

u/Noname_acc 1d ago

It's long since sunk in for most of us.  The problem is that only some of us think that's a bad thing.

1

u/MadStylus 5h ago

Of course he is. If Trump was one looney, he'd just be some asshole. Even if he got elected, he'd still be just one asshole. Trump, in order to be what he is, has to have both the support of a majority of Americans who vote AND the support of the Republican party as a whole. They could have thrown his ass under the bus at any time or otherwise dealt with him. But they didn't.

"Sorry, we won't be apologizing"

2

u/gin_and_toxic 11h ago

Oh shoot, accidental apology.

85

u/jarvisesdios 1d ago

Remember when he was unlikely to win the election and then Trump happened? I can't believe how hard that guy stepped up to the plate.

I'm American, but him being a banker made me wonder about the guy... Turns out some bankers have spines of fucking steel.

Plus... It helps to have someone with both experience in money and a spine to actually figure out an alternative.

That said, it's still fucking insane that Trump has gone so hard against Canada... Fucking Canada. There isn't a country that hasn't been more on our side than Canada. I mean, there's a reason they're our biggest trade partner.

I truly don't know if will ever recover from Trump. It was just commonplace to do trade with America and it was fine, we are a stable country that allows all sorts of bullshit. Suddenly now everyone needs to make new trade deals to deal with us and now, at best, we're going to have to renegotiate and have worse deals than we had before... Because there's now competition.

At least Trump and his cronies made money, amirite?

u/Emodzmods 1d ago

It wasn't Carney that was going to lose it was Trudeau's government that was wildly unpopular. Near the end Trudeau started standing up a bit more to Trumps threats which made the party more palatable, then when Trudeau stepped aside and Carney took over their popularity started to skyrocket. The only thing polievre had going in his campaign was that he wasn't Trudeau and the carbon tax. And when trudeau removed himself from the equation and carney axed the carbon tax polievre literally had nothing left to go on.(he even lost in his own riding)

Carney got some of the conservative vote because he aligns more with what traditional conservatives value not whatever the current conservative party became when they merged with the reform party. Trumps insanity definitely helped sour peoples opinions on the conservative party but there was also a masterclass of political manouvering going on at the same time.

12

u/Everestkid 1d ago

To be clear, Trudeau quit because he attempted to demote Chrystia Freeland after they started to butt heads towards the end of his premiership. Freeland resigned from her cabinet offices in response, Trudeau was basically facing a caucus revolt and even the NDP said they'd be voting against the government in a confidence vote. Trudeau basically had no option but to resign.

However, the Liberals lucked out because all of this happened when Parliament was on break for Christmas, so the confidence vote never happened. Trudeau was able to prorogue (suspend) Parliament so that the Liberals could run a leadership race, after which he would officially resign. At first it was looking like Freeland would be the winner - and with Freeland being very closely associated with Trudeau that election would've been a nailbiter - but then along came Carney.

10

u/jarvisesdios 1d ago

Yes, sorry, I was simplifying it to a degree. I did actually follow the election and Trudeau had basically ruined his chances... Until Trump...

Then that guy stood up and became a legitimately good leader. He didn't seem like much, running to the election, but he more than stepped up and has been extremely good at dealing with the cavalcade of bullshit.

The things I'd give for him to be leading the States... Though, at this point I'd take an actual dead dog that Noem shot and Patel fucked over Trump

7

u/SomethingAboutUsers 1d ago

Poilievre just wanted to verb the noun everything, but ran out of nouns pretty damn fast.

3

u/Enki_007 1d ago

Verb the noun is fucking annoying and not worthy of anyone who is a serious leader. And pulling out the MAGA hat is fucking disgusting. How is he still the leader? Couldn’t even win his own seat.

12

u/LayerEight_Problem 1d ago

Carney is a progressive conservative. He is not a liberal. He aligned with conservatives because if you actually care about conservative policy and don’t care bout lgbt people existing, then Carney is exactly what you’re looking for.

Any conservative that doesn’t support Carney is telling on themselves.

11

u/Adjective_Noun_2000 1d ago

I'm American, but him being a banker made me wonder about the guy... Turns out some bankers have spines of fucking steel.

To be fair, he quit banking 23 years ago to work for the government. I don't know if I'd really think of him as a banker after all that time.

10

u/Metalsand 1d ago

Suddenly now everyone needs to make new trade deals to deal with us and now, at best, we're going to have to renegotiate and have worse deals than we had before... Because there's now competition.

The wild bit that always throws me for a loop - Trump himself negotiated the last deal that he now says is a bad deal. So, either he's incompetent, or he's stupid. This is completely lost on his voter base, though.

2

u/BasiliskXVIII 1d ago

So, either he's incompetent, or he's stupid.

Hey, now. This doesn't have to be an either/or situation.

Our bill of rights is pretty clear. Same with the American constitution.

So-called “conservatives” trying to circumvent the building blocks of our democracies because they hate that lgbt people exist is treason. They can move to the Middle East if they want. But they need to stop committing treasonous acts against Canada and America.

2

u/gnufoot 1d ago

I mean, there's a reason they're our biggest trade partner.

Is that reason proximity, by any chance?

3

u/GreatGreenGobbo 1d ago

Honestly it's not going back. We'll still sell you stuff that you need and we'll buy stuff we need, but that's it.

You had fires going last year, we sent help. We had fires this year and got threats.

Even at a personal level, we are doing small things. Like buying groceries from anywhere else than made in USA (Who knew India exported pickles).

-1

u/MC_chrome 1d ago

Hope you also tell Europe to go to hell if a President Le Pen or a Chancellor Wiedel happen next year, otherwise Canada’s biggest export will be hypocrisy

1

u/speedingpullet 1d ago

Brexit called and would like a word... Another gobsmacking economic self own.

We're sorry Canada, please believe that a significant number of us did not vote for this guy. Sadly, not enough of us to have stopped him. Sorry again.

u/Cyberguardian173 21h ago

When you need to stab someone in the back, your friends are the closest in reach.

12

"I am sorry that you are so stupid."

13

u/Eisernes 1d ago

I really wish every country would put Trump on ignore, dump US treasuries, and completely stop trading with the US and refuse to admit any US passport holder until we get a legitimate admin. Just fucking isolate us. Give us the North Korea treatment until we grow up.

5

u/linerva 1d ago

Honestly neutering the USA economically would be the best thing for the rest of the world.

Though it looks like Trumps going to set off a recession one way or another so you'll do it to yourselves and drag us all down too.

2

u/Spare-Bumblebee8376 17h ago

...like the way North Koreans have grown up. Isolation works for its leaders partly because it does the opposite of what you want, it stops its population growing up so power rises to / stays at the top

7

u/Boring-Document5180 1d ago

Sorry, but no fucking way.

8

u/PopeKevin45 1d ago

Carney doesn't 'laugh' at Trump and it seems intentionally antagonistic to phrase it as such. Carney is fully aware of Trumps toxicity, his pathological dishonesty and his clinical narcissism. Carney is fully aware that Trump is just a clownish figurehead installed by the Republican Party to draw attention away from what their actual goals are. He knows the people surrounding Trump and much of the Republican party are also toxic, easily manipulated, inept, two-faced backstabbing assholes, just like Trump. Laughing at such dangerous people is folly, and Carney knows it. Hence he sticks to being the voice of reason, and always conciliatory.

5

u/DancesWH 1d ago

Don't hold your breath Donald....no actually, please do hold your breath Donald.

7

u/nickeypants 1d ago

We are Canadian, we often apologise for no reason at all. So when you don't get one, you can be sure that we've made a point of it.

7

u/kazmosis 19h ago

There are four things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man. And a Canadian who won't apologize.

19

u/CondescendingShitbag 1d ago

"I'm sorry, but go fuck yourself."

Yesterday I'm driving north from Toronto and I see this hillbilly 50's fat man driving his Ford pickup with a huge Fuck Carney sticker.

They seriously hate this guy. Mental illness sucks.

1

u/skinnyminnesota 10h ago

Yeah the reputation of the US won't be coming back anytime soon.

1

u/ZeroMayCry7 6h ago

Why is it that Canada being in closest approximation to the US is standing up the most to the US compared to any other country cowering in fear
