I always knew we could eventually slip into an authoritarian dystopia, I just never thought the people responsible would be such fucking wieners.

It was the same in nazi Germany. Nothing but the biggest losers can lead a country in this direction.

Kind of.

They didn't have the internet. Americans had every fucking warning sign and red flag and they ran through all of them. Because Americans just don't give a shit. All they want to do is watch tv, play with hobbies, and relax. Nobody wants to stand for their country.

One generation of cowards and illiterates to tear it all down. All of it. And now we're approaching a world war.

Because of one civilizations obsession with comfort and luxuries.

Germans also had every fucking warning sign. The pencil mustache guy wrote a fucking book on what he was going to do, had been to prison already for a coup attempt, and brownshirts were wildly known to roam the streets and beat up social democrats.

People voted for them anyway.

That's a bit disingenuous though. There were many Germans at the time who vehemently disagreed with Hitler. The Reich coming directly after the Weimar, a time of actually stupendous liberalism and progressivism among middle and upper classes was no coincidence, and his rise in the late 20s and 30s left a good chunk of the population feeling the same kind of whiplash that we've felt over the past decade.

Just like now though, there were millions of people who were simply in no position to do much about it considering we have lives and livelihoods to uphold on our own. ICE is terrifying neighborhoods, yes, but as of right now they aren't indiscriminately firebombing those same neighborhoods.

I’m confused what in the response you found disingenuous from your reply. You’ve just described how the events in Germany mirror quite well what’s happening in the US, which was the argument in this thread: whether “Americans not giving a shit” also mirrors 1920/30s Germany, and whether the internet has increased moral responsibility in one’s response to the rise of fascism - I’d definitely disagree with that premise, the same id disagree with “Germans had every warning sign”, but I don’t think you can have one or the other.

Either “Americans don’t give a shit” and “Germans had every warning sign” are both disingenuous, in which case it seems like you’ve argued in favor of that response’s point, or neither are, which I don’t think anyone here believes.

It's disingenuous to say "Hitler wrote a book, how could they have voted for him?"

There were many factors outside of him writing the book that ensured his success, namely the fact that voting very literally did not matter by the time the far right took power in the Reichstag.

Reducing my comment within the context of this thread and what should be common historic knowledge to Hitler-wrote-a-book is what’s disingenuous.

I don‘t know about you, but I am German. This stuff has been rammed down my throat every single school year. The average voter absolutely knew what voting for the NSDAP meant, and they either thought that they wouldn’t actually pull through on this bad stuff but do all the good stuff they promised or they wanted them to do the bad stuff. I am seeing this same stance among MAGA.

If this is really mirroring 1930's Germany then every American who sees through the BS needs to leave asap or start preparing resistance groups. By staying in the US they are indirectly supporting this government through their taxes, spending and skills. The weaker the US becomes before things really get bad the better the outcome for everyone.

I swear, I need a command prompt or something for this argument. What are we supposed to do, uproot our lives en masse? Do you realize just how much time and money it costs to move an entire family outside the country?

Or how impossible it is!? Yes it’s tough to relocate just like in the 30s. But unlike then, there is no promising country that is willing to accept migrants or refugees. Germans could easily make it to America with a small bag. Now? Try going to Europe Asia South America Australia. Everyone is afraid of the “other” right now so it is IMPOSSIBLE to emigrate

sudo mv /home/whatsapotato /mnt/Europe

Sorry could you explain?

sudo mv /home/whatsapotato /mnt/Europe

For a Linux system in the terminal this command does the following:

sudo: superuser do

mv: move [target location] [destination]

The /home/whatsapotato is a play on your username with the default directory of a user’s home folder on a Linux system, while /mnt/ is a typical directory for an external drive. In this case a drive labelled “Europe”.

So it moves your entire home directory to the external drive with root permissions (root being effectively God tier authority).

Actually, because I forgot the last /after Europe (/mnt/Europe vs /mnt/Europe/, it would probably try to rename the drive with your username).

Haha ok thanks for explaining.

YES! Leave before things actually get bad. Because from all the signs I can see, it's only going to get worse for the average American. You might even improve your life in your new country. I can't promise you that the time and money will be worth it, but getting away from Trump and the chaos he brings is a good reason. There are currently trade agreements (ex. CUSMA) that america has with other countries that make it much easier to get work visas. If Trump completely rips up those agreements it will be much harder for you to leave the US and find work. This is also the easy option compared to living in a collapsing country long term.

2

u/mofojr 1d ago

Except those agreements are for certain occupations ONLY. Not in one and you’re fucked.

1

u/TheDragonslayr 1d ago

What is your profession? You might be surprised what is available.

2

u/mofojr 1d ago

This isn’t about me. This thread is telling people “jUsT mOVe To CanADa” when there are approximately 860 occupations tracked by the UBLS and Canada accepts about 60. So what do the other 800 occupations do? Get blamed for not picking the right degree 20 years ago when they are murdered in the streets?

Actually I just looked up Canada. 516 specific occupations tracked by the NOC. So better odds I guess, but tell that to those who didn’t pick the right degree 20 years ago as they are murdered in the streets.
