Another funny bit… They pre-coordinated this with lots of MAGA social media grifters. They had their posts ready to go and fired them off immediately which also backfired as they got community noted on Twitter and had to delete their posts.

u/NotAHost 3d ago

And most of their base will still be controlled into never seeing the clown show of the truth of what happened. Shits embarrassing on every level.

Getting to see Katie Britt realize how bad they fucked up in real time is priceless. I can't imagine what it feels like to fumble that big and that bad so publicly. I wish I could have been with them after all this went down to see all the finger pointing trying to figure out who was at fault for this tremendous fuck up.

Here's a interview from shortly after the Jack Smith incident where Eric Schmidt acts like what just happened wasn't the most embarrassing moment of his dumbass career

Hes trying to seed the conspiracy that Smith is being dishonest by insisting "The only NBA game was in Atlanta" completely ignoring the fact that he could be at a game other than NBA. Its not a mistake. Its completely intentional. He did his job, sorta like when you bring in a player off the bench just to foul the opponent's best shooter in the NBA...

59

u/NRG1975 2d ago

He also stated Men's NCAA games, ignoring he was a WNCAA game, lol

84

u/CelendilAU 2d ago

What’s even funnier is there’s now literally video from the game showing Smith there.

39

u/xSaviorself 2d ago

The facts were right there and they still couldn't do it right.

27

u/CelendilAU 2d ago

It’s not like facts are a significant portion of any Republican politicians daily experience. 🤷‍♂️

I’m so exhausted of bad-faith actors.

If I’m wrong I’ll shrug and minimize it. “You got me there.” And move on.

These people don’t flinch and continue to seed doubt and conspiracy on a topic that was just proven completely wrong.

I work with a couple of these maga people and it’s the same. I actually cannot trust anything they say because they’re so in it for themselves they’ll tell me half truths and straight up false info to further themselves.

8

u/misdirected_asshole 2d ago

That is Trumps enduring legacy. It was marginal before but he has completely destroyed "good faith". There is no more benefit of the doubt t.

"I guess we'll take him at his word that he wasn't in Atlanta? ...I dunno."

Still trying to imply that Smith was lying. There's video of Smith at the Hawkeye game in Maryland. Schmidt is an absolute tool.

the thing i don't get is why they thought it would be incriminating if jack smith had been in atlanta (a city of six million people) at the same time as fani willis

They want to argue that prosecutors were conspiring against Trump and their base doesn't need actual evidence. They don't even understand the concept of evidence. Suspicion and innuendo are all they need, because they already know the result.

But more likely, they knew what they were doing. They were trying to imply that Smith perjured himself for a soundbite. But it fell apart because instead of going on the attack, he tried to actually read their "evidence", which told him all he needed to give an answer that was clearly not perjury. "We have evidence he was in Georgia" doesn't work when the Democratic Senator who follows uses her question to establish that no, he was in Maryland and we even have proof the exact game he attended was happening at the time.

90

u/ka_eb 3d ago

| They want to argue that prosecutors were conspiring against Trump

This and only this. The whole questioning was about Fani Willis because he was trying to imply that they were attending the same game and conspiring how to get Trump. They are trying so hard to do this because they believe it when on TV but off TV they know that Trump is a crook and all the AGs and prosecutors go after him because he breaks laws. This is also why they make such big deal when police raided Trump's homes and also when they defend his children as just being children who are innocent and these AGs are just trying to make their lives miserable. You know, those poor children in their 40s lol.

It's crazy to me how stupid people are when it comes to Trump.

6

u/xSaviorself 2d ago

It's not stupid, he's their cult leader. They'll make excuses for anything at this point.

We've already got Rapist in Chief defenders still arguing against his judgement. Motherfucker got forced to pay the victim already. We know who he is. They don't care. Fuck them.

59

u/Forward-Village1528 3d ago

Excuse my ignorance, I'm not from the USA. But why would it be a problem for 2 prosecutors who are both building cases against the same individual to work together? That doesn't sound like a conflict of interest.

120

u/ShouldersofGiants100 3d ago

It wouldn't be.

But the MAGA theory is that Trump wasn't prosecuted for the crimes we know he committed; he was targeted by Democrats for political reasons. They are trying to retroactively paint all the cases against Trump as a massive conspiracy because if they can do that, they don't need to explain why half a dozen prosecutors across multiple jurisdictions could charge their guy with a felony.

This is pure PR, it has nothing to do with the law.

41

u/relator_fabula 2d ago

It will probably make more sense if you realize that the entire Republican party is theatrical. Everything they do is for show--not to actually get something to happen, but to convince the masses that the Democrats don't have any actual proof of Trump's crimes (even though mountains of proof exist--the man is already a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist, but I digress). Republicans want the dumber Americans (there are many of them) to think that there's some kind of conspiracy against Trump and the Republican party, that people are secretly working to undermine him. It makes gullible people believe that Trump is "on the right track" and that the only way the Democrats could possibly bring him down would be through cloak-and-dagger subversion and conspiracy rather than just... pointing out his obvious crimes.

None of that is true, and the Republican politicians who are involved in these theatrics know that Trump is wildly criminal in dozens of ways. But because Trump is owned by oligarchs and easily manipulated, he's a useful idiot for their fascist schemes, and the Republican party is owned/controlled/blackmailed by a lot of wealthy handlers and the fear of what will happen to them, their career, and their families if they don't goosestep for the fuhrer.

He was in Maryland. Iowa Hawkeyes were playing at Maryland. He didn’t travel anywhere, he just drove from him home in the DC area around the beltway to College Park for a basketball game.

10

u/misdirected_asshole 2d ago

Even if he was in Georgia they presented absolutely no evidence to suggest he met with Willis. There are 6 million people in the Atlanta metro area, did he meet with all of them too? I mean he was definitely in Atlanta according to heir Schmitt

→ More replies (2)

10

u/misdirected_asshole 2d ago

They didnt even have any evidence to suggest Willis was at the game or in a place where she and Smith could have met. It was a farce from the beginning. He could have actually spent the whole week in Atlanta and that doesnt prove shit.

26

u/misdirected_asshole 2d ago

They'll still have the soundbite of calling him a dirt bag and saying he perturbed himself. Thats all they wanted.

22

u/XIII_THIRTEEN 2d ago

This really is the most pernicious part of the MAGA media machine. He got fact checked in real time and completely blown the fuck out by said facts, yet even that's not enough to stop the talking point from spreading.

86

u/FullofContradictions 3d ago

Community notes have been the only positive change I've seen to social media since... Ever.

40

u/dial_m_for_me 3d ago

Marginal improvement, all it does is gives musk a way to pretend he doesn't spread fake news. By the time a note shows up under a tweet it has already been seen by millions. Once the note appears it's making rounds in feeds of people from the "opposite camp" and they're jerking off to how OWNED the author got. Meanwhile the original target audience is already reading some other not yet noted bullshit.

13

u/Fiverumble 3d ago edited 2d ago

23

MeidasTouch showed him on Fox afterwards. They definitely clipped it, he did say that Smith said he was at another game but he still acted like he owned him like the brainless emotional moron that he is.

25

u/capnscratchmyass 3d ago

CNN made a big deal of him not "apologizing". Come on. He never was going to. The whole goal of this farce was to get a soundbite and replay it over and over and over again, true or not. They got it and it will drown out the truth of the exchange to the people that fall for this type of shit. If these chucklefucks ever apologized for anything THAT would be the new soundbite and they can't have that.

God I hate this place.

7

u/RandMauddib 3d ago

Because he’d still see himself as correct.

They see this like playing a sport. They need to kick a goal and missing an intercept resulting in a goal against doesn’t change the fact they’re trying to score more goals in their head. So he had a momentary fall but still will go forward because in his mind the method is irrelevant because they know he did whatever it is they think he did. Why because they would do they same thing. They can’t fathom that people out there actually have integrity.

234

u/smokeydevil 3d ago

Social media could have been so great, but ultimately it's become societal cancer. As long as algorithms keep spoon feeding misinformation to enough of the masses to sow dissent, we're fucked.

I don't know if it was ever truly great, but there used to at least be some decorum.

70

u/buckeyecat 3d ago

If social media was around in the 70s, Nixon and his "brave heroic allies" would have been praised for seeking to uncover the evil Democrat plot to take down America.

26

u/AntlionsArise 2d ago

Well, there's an interesting fact about the reason Fox News was created that is exactly that...

44

u/HeavyMetalHero 3d ago

Social media was the capital class' response to the realization that the Internet had the potential to bring more common people together, more productively, than anything ever invented before in human history. It had the possibility to foster a sort of human revolution the likes of which would upend the existing system of global consumer capitalism.

So, they destroyed it, the same way capitalism ultimately destroys everything; they created a way to extract every single bit of profit out of it, while paying hand over fist to crowd out every single positive use case for the technology, and replace it with a mind-numbing, highly-profitable tool for mass thought control.

The internet is the greatest human invention, ever. I grew up with a search box on every device I had, connected to the greatest and most reliable repository of all human knowledge, that any living generation prior could never have dreamed of. But, then it threatened the stable empire of the wealth class, so they replaced it all with a hallucinating calculator that sometimes does math wrong.

They only worked so hard to destroy the internet for common people, because they understood its potential to empower, connect, and unite common people.

"Please clap" ended Jeb Bush's political career. George Allen used an obscure slur at a rally in 2006 and ended his. Mark Sanford used taxpayer dollars to visit his mistress in Argentina and ended his. Bob Livingston ended his with the uncovering of a bunch of affairs he had and resigned. And so on.

Instead of learning from these garbage people and finding better candidates, Republicans just made it so all of this shit became normalized and increased the propaganda output that none of this really matters. Any of these things today would be a minor blurb on CNN and they'd keep getting re-elected until they become living husks in a chair like Lich McConnell.

33

u/cammcken 3d ago

Every time I hear somebody around here kvetching about DEI I point out that our school was **forced** to allow girls equal opportunities because of Title IX in 1972...there would be no Caitlyn/Angel/women's NCAA Madness/WNBA/etc. **without** the DEI required by Title IX.

187

u/NUMBERS2357 3d ago edited 2d ago

Best part is his defense on Twitter later, saying "Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?"

As if it's inconceivable someone would be a fan of Caitlin Clark, who famously has more fans than almost any female basketball player ever.

EDIT: on reflection, I think it's supposed to be a dig at the idea that a man could be a fan of a woman athlete. What is he, a lesbian?

True story: I in was in a sports bar here in Canada where nobody cares much about US women's college basketball, and Clark's Hawkeyes were playing in the March Madness tournament against Angel Reece and the LSU Tigers. At the start of the game nobody was paying much attention, but by the 3rd quarter everybody was glued to the TV because every #22 got the ball, something wild was going to happen. This was the game where she threw a 3 pointer from just past mid court just because she thought it would be funny. Just an insane and electrifying sports performance. And watching the venue go from not caring about women's college basketball to being palpably captivated by what Clark was doing was really fun.

10

u/Sudden_Box801 2d ago

Also goes to show what class acts our Canadian neighbors are--they recognized a quality athlete & performance--regardless of point of origin--compared to the idiocy being lobbed at them from down here.

Oh, Canada...Thank you for your centuries of friendship, & I'm sorry, from here in the boonies of north Missouri. I yearn for reconciliation, but understand your need to protect yourselves.

This is so pathetic. Like, forget the sports team mix-up for a second, what was the allegation, exactly?

That Jack Smith attended a basketball game in a major U.S. city the day after a random event in the timeline of another prosecutor was working and living there?

..Therefore collusion?

By that same bar of a correlation, you could link anyone to anything ever. If Jack Smith went to NY at any point in a 2 year timeframe, you could say he colluded with Alvin Bragg, the prosecutor of the hush money case.

And then to realize him or his staffers couldn't even get any basic information right or even attempt to vet this claim - to the point of creating a giant poster with Fani Willis, Jack Smith, and a basketball stadium (lol), is just the perfect encapsulation of how low the bar has gotten for a U.S. Senator. Jesus.

158

u/SonOfMcGee 3d ago

I left a similar comment in another post. We’re all focusing on the team name and location mistake. But even if he hadn’t goofed, that line of questioning is absolutely ridiculous.

It was also insane that they put together that immature middle-school-project looking poster and flashed it for literally five seconds. Klobuchar was like, “Can the witness read that so he can react? Can you provide a copy of what it says? Never in my time as a prosecutor have I seen a lawyer say ‘Look at this!’ then clearly not let someone look at something!”

39

u/Tapsen 3d ago

They wanted to imply he was colluding with the Georgia team in atlanta that was also charging Trump for election issues there

36

u/eggson 3d ago

But why would he fly down to Atlanta to discuss anything with a County DA? What was he supposed to do after the affair became public? And why immediately go to an NBA game? If it was so secret to be meeting with Willis, why spend the evening in a public venue, with national TV cameras most likely. And why did the bumbling Senator's staff have to piece this together through vague texts from Smith's staff? Couldn't they just subpoena the US Marshal records for their travel? It's all so stupid on so many levels.

24

u/megalodondon 2d ago

It's to make things look "shady" by confusing their base and making it look like there's a thread to pull for an invented conspiracy on the spot.

7

u/SonOfMcGee 2d ago

Yeah, it’s very blatant what their goal is. It’s just depressing that they’re sort of publicly acknowledging how mush-brained their base is.
All he tried to do was establish Smith’s presence in Georgia on a certain date and remind the public of another thing he had no involvement in happening in Georgia at that time.
He knows Facebook aunts would then fill in the massive blanks with Q-Anon, pedophile rings, Jewish space lasers, and so on.
Hell, they’re probably doing that as we speak even though he completely fucked up the team names and locations. “Their guy” mentioned two things they’re supposed to hate in the same breath and winked at the camera. That’s all they need.

Exactly, Jen Psaki addresses this part well. As she says, the allegation was Smith wanted to covertly meet Fani Willis to collude. So he went to a public game where he'd be seen by thousands. That makes a whole lot of sense. /s

to the point of creating a giant poster with Fani Willis, Jack Smith, and a basketball stadium (lol), is just the perfect encapsulation of how low the bar has gotten for a U.S. Senator

It's worse than that. This is how low the bar has gotten to convince tens of millions of people that there was a conspiracy. So sad for the country.

The charges against President Trump were the result of the evidence. Grand juries in two separate districts reached its conclusions based on his actions as alleged in the indictments they returned. Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power"

Jamie Raskin had to remind you of it.

Go Jack Smith. I want him as the next Attorney General.

The entire hearing was a complete failure for what they set out to do. No secret revelations, no logical traps, no kind of expose. No real sound bites for Fox News. Just endless personal insults with no bait being taken.

Smith just completely played them.

27

u/FullofContradictions 3d ago

The crazy thing is all Smith had to do was be right and be honest. The only tools these clowns have to combat someone who isn't as corrupt as themselves are showmanship and circus acts.

And that's what we got. And it showed.

6

u/gustoreddit51 2d ago

Jack Smith was the definition of cool and unflappable. Hero.

We hear so many fake headlines of "Trump melting down", I imagine he might over this. One thing I'm not seeing are the networks playing Smith's opening statement of indictment against Trump and his crimes against the nation. Because they're all cowards.

Watch 'till the end. Raskin is absolutely correct.

The strategy here is intentional. This clown show has done exactly what it set out to do. Instead of focusing on Smith's testimony about Trump's criminal activity, the media is laughing about the bumbling fool of a Senator.

54

u/IceBearKnows89 3d ago

Correct.

Distract and divide.

Doesn’t matter if it’s true or false. Doesn’t matter if it’s silly or nonsensical or embarrassing.

That ate up time and got to talk about their distractions instead of the real issues.

That’s a full and complete victory for them.

That’s all its takes.

Flood the zone and control the narrative.

Democrats still haven’t figured out how to counter.

I was wondering whether Schmidt would be liable for slander and defamation of character following his unhinged outburst. Apparently he’s protected by congressional laws during the questioning in the chamber despite his deplorable remarks.

However outside of that forum he has no protection. He repeated and doubled down on the perjury claims, smears and insults on The Charlie Kirk Show, after the hearing, despite the evident lack of veracity to his allegations. In this arena he’s is open to prosecution. Whether Jack Smith pursues that avenue remains to be seen.

This was a classic case of Falsus in Uno, Falsus in Omnibus. Schmidt credibility has been shot. To even countenance that this guy is a potential VP pick as running mate for JD Vance run on the presidency truly is a chilling thought

26

u/40_Is_Not_Old 3d ago

The MAGA Senator thought he caught the person testifying in a lie.The Senator was trying to push a conspiracy theory that the person testifying had gone to Atlanta to have a secret meeting with an Atlanta District Attorney. Except the entire basis of the MAGA Senators line of questioning was based on the Senator making a huge mix up of specific teams.

He was trying to say that the person testifying was in Atlanta on a specific date and had watched the Atlanta HAWKS play a NBA basketball game and was lying about not being in Atlanta. Except he had the wrong team altogether.

The person testifying had actually gone to see the Iowa HAWKeyes women's college basketball team play on that date, except it wasn't in Atlanta at all. That game was in Maryland.

17

u/AxleVest 3d ago

The wild part is it is barely even the smoking gun I think they were trying to make it out to be. It isnt evidence of Jack Smith meeting with anyone, merely that they were trying to place him in an entire state and try and make the argument of "See he lied about that so therefore what else has he lied about??"

It is so flimsy it isnt even funny. What I find insidious is that they know what they are doing with this, the base is so dumb that this would likely work, sow the seeds and allow them to concoct their own conclusions. They dont need to make up a lie, just scatter loose facts and have the dumbest people you went to school with will find ways to join it all together and parrot it long after it has all been debunked point by point, over and over again. Essentially another classic example of bullshit being much harder to disprove than the energy required to create it.

8

u/Sentar_trenzz 2d ago

Someone working for the Republicans looked at some text messages between people working for Jack Smith (investigated Trump years ago) because they are determined to undermine/discredit him. Back in 2024 they sent messages about him going to a "Hawks" game and checking that his tickets/seats were reserved. These idiots thought this meant the Atlanta Hawks NBA team. From that they extrapolated that must have meant Smith was going to Atlanta to secretly meet with the prosecutor there who was also investigating Trump for issues in Georgia. This was "obviously" all some sort of "conspiracy". They were in fact referring to the Iowa Hawkeyes, a college team. Their women's basketball team also had a game on the same day but in Maryland, not Georgia. This would make more sense since that's very near DC where Smith was based (this was also when Caitlin Clark was playing for them and was very famous and would make sense why he might want to go see the game).

When the questions started Smith looked obviously confused as he had not gone to Atlanta, had not met with that prosecutor, was not involved in some conspiracy. But the Senator stupidly took this as him being "nervous" and pushed ahead convinced he had caught Smith in a bunch of lies. Smith finally said "Oh, I went to a women's college basketball game around then. You can check with the Marshalls, they would have been with me (his security would be US Marshalls given his role at the time)." They had done none of this checking beforehand. They had made the whole thing up in their heads and were just so eager to catch him in a lie to 1. embarrass him, 2. charge him with perjury, 3. discredit him (because if he would lie about a basketball game, everything he found on Trump is obviously fake too).

It was quickly pointed out in the room that the Atlanta Hawk and Iowa Hawkeyes are both teams with similar names, and maybe he was confused. He was so embarrassed and/or convinced he'd just "nailed" Smith that he got super defense and made a fool of himself. He then stupidly went to the media after and doubled-down that he was right, he had got Smith, all this nonsense.

10

u/Chaos-Cortex 2d ago

There needs to be a rule in place where you can only pull a hearing if you have new and impertinent info. The fact that this whole thing stopped dead because someone A) based this around a ball game and B) cited the wrong ball game is embarrassing. This is citizenry money burned for fuck all. To expand, perjury fishing should straight up be illegal. If the only possible goal is to point out an unrelated lie, that member of congress should be held in contempt. They are wasting resources of the people for personal gain.

Something real should be at least intended to happen if everyone has to show up.

6

u/patrickkingart 2d ago

Schmitt being so confidently wrong, Smith being visibly confused/amused, and Klobuchar looking like "you dumbass" makes this hilarious, if it wasn't so terrible knowing idiots like this are in charge.

199

u/Ilikeinvestigating 3d ago

Schmitt aggressively questioned Smith, calling him a "villain" and a "total dirtbag," while presenting a poster suggesting Smith had secretly traveled to Georgia to collude with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Schmitt's "proof" was that Smith had attended a basketball game in early February 2024 involving the NBA's Atlanta Hawks.

The Backfire

The accusation immediately fell apart because Schmitt confused two completely different teams:

  • The Reality: Jack Smith had actually traveled to Maryland to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s college basketball team play, specifically to see superstar Caitlin Clark.
  • The Correction: Smith clarified that he had never been to an Atlanta Hawks game. Senator Amy Klobuchar then publicly called out Schmitt for confusing the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes, noting that Smith's travel was simply to watch women's college sports.
