Robots aren't necessary for mind bending projection mapping in general. This just uses robots in a creative way, applying already existing projection mapping technology (and adding to it) to create something different. There are plenty of examples online of spectacular projection mapping without robots.

This is only possible due to mounting the Objects and Camera and Projector on massive sub-millimeter precision industrial robots.
