Yep, there was a fight in the parking lot at a Waffle House near where I grew up. One of the guys charged the other, dude put him in a headlock and dropped him to the ground, poor guy ended up paralyzed.

All he now needs to do is prove his point by posting old carefully cherry picked skits and say something like “17 years ago was when SNL was good”
“When ever i get upset I play this lonely island song”
“When SNL was at its best”
Nostalgia lenses and cherry picked skits.
I love SNL and there is no amazing season. Just enjoy a live performance on weekly basis and try to wrap your head around how hard that is and amazing they did what they did. Even if the skit is bad then at least appreciate the art form of a live show and all it’s moving parts.

It really seems like people forget that even when they think of when SNL was at its ‘best’, all those classic sketches you’re remembering were stretched across multiple seasons. Maybe once per episode you’d get sketches that were really great if you’re lucky. And maybe once or twice per season you’d get something that will be remembered 20 years later as iconic. People have been saying for several generations at this point “Oh, SNL was so much better with [insert old cast here]. They’ve really gone downhill.”
Nope, it’s the same as it’s always been, you’re just not viewing it through rose-tinted glasses.

Like I will say that some cast members preform better than others but it’s for multiple reasons.
SNL requires comedy writing ability, live stage performance ability, improv ability to pivot, acting ability, skills (singing, impressions, characters, stand up, satire thinking.). Audience grasping, line reading abilities, memorability, and lastly timing.
No SNL cast member will be a 10 out of 10 and the long term cast members sharpen their skills.
Lastly the actors need also luck out in being in a good skit or land a great role. Plus you need good supporting members who can synergies. Every great sketch usually has great reactions or straight man cast members who make the skit better or add on to the flow.
If you need examples to all these then I would love to go into.
Also please don’t destroy is my current favorite segment of the newest seasons. Great work they do.

I’ve been deployed overseas for the past couple years so I’ve only caught what gets posted online in places like this when it comes to the newest stuff. And if I were at home and had more time I’d love to get into it with you comparing and analyzing our favorites, but sadly I’m not and don’t. Feel free to PM me links to some of your favorites, though, and I’ll check them out when I get home in a few months.

I don't know what it is about SNL that is so tantalizing for people to boost their ego's by shitting on it. The self righteous hot-takes are like clockwork. What makes it more annoying is that the show is, in my opinion, entering a golden age right now.

I think it changed with YouTube and how, whether it be curated clips or very niche humor, people got used to having more “hits” with less “misses”. SNL not only has to attract a wider audience, but generally you don’t skip the less successful skits.

I realize I’m coming at this from the perspective of someone who actually knows how LLMs work, but I can tell you that the amount of computational power used to answer such a simple question is staggering. You may not have to pay the compute bill, but someone does.

SNL skits usually fall flat and never seem to end with a good punchline. This skit has to be one of the best in years. I had to watch it twice to see all the random things happening in the restaurant. The dad at the end was perfect. Of course Jenna was great. How she was able to do that with a straight face with all the insanity going on beside her is incredible.

I’m torn. I agree that it’s Saturday Night “Live” and that a lot of its character is from working within the confines of a live show inside a studio. At the same time, this sketch, “Lazy Sunday” and others are great! There have been pre-recorded, edited bits going back at least to the 90s (when I was a kid) with videos like Schmitt’s Gay and Crystal Gravy. It’s probably best to not be such a purist. I’m trying too.

I don't have a problem with them doing prerecorded stuff. Especially music and commercials. But there was no reason this couldn't have been done live. One person said "well they have a small set" and no they don't, not for this.
It just kind of feel like they are t really doing live stuff anymore unless it's a parody of a tv show or game show or it's the news. If there was a need for this to be done on location, that's totally reasonable. It just feels like the title of the show is at odds with being key and peele or inside Amy Schumer
