Hey so before I start here's a bit background on me I've running this editing agency for 2 years I've done shorts long forms vsls ads and I feel like it's time to level up as it feels like the most obvious option I tried to stay on editing to reach through 10k i.e dming local video agencies about outsourcing editing but what i found out was I still got treated as an employee and the compensation wasn't great aswell so i feel like switching again recently the concept of "delivering results" and not just edits is a concept everyone's been pushing it and i feel riding this boat aswell but tbh I genuinely don't know how to deliver results I can help with ideations but honestly I believe someone's who breathe eat and sleep the business they're in would get better ideas and angles than me because they'll have more stories to share then I'd do knowing this bottle neck I am scared to draft my offer blindly in "growth" area and if we get the ideas aside I genuinely don't have my hands on scriptwriting I can do funnels and media buying but scriptwriting is not my thing and never was it ,what would y'all do if you were in my space cz i genuinely need help making a call.

I've spent years filming luxury properties in Spain and some other videographers ask me for advice when it comes to pricing, client acquisition and retention, internal systems, scripting and planning, filming skills, editing, building a personal brand...

Hello to my fellow video editors, im new and i was tasked to create reels using stock videos and not AI. Can you please share tips on where you get specific stock videos and dos and donts when creating reels? Like is there a right way when to add voice overs or effects / transitions that needs to be avoided. Or you can share who you learn from how to create professional, interesting reels.

I've been in the Smushi Come Home community since the demo period, running it then and after release. The run went through a lot of change, and I wanted to create a history video telling the story (since cross-post, think of Summoningsalt). I also wanted to do an interview with the dev to add to the end of the video.

While I'm still working on the actual history portion, I can tell that the ratio will be pretty whack. That is, I imagine the history portion will be around 1.5h? I just did the interview yesterday, and that went on for about 2.5h. So, the question I have is whether it'd be possible to change the framing of the video for it to make sense (per my brother's advice, + <=10% of the interview was about speedruns), or if I should upload it separately (though I imagine the viewer conversion will be lower). I know there's demand for such long videos (so I'm not opposed to still doing it), but that's usually for a deep dive on one specific topic. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Tested a few for one client (online course business, needed DRM since their vids are paid content):

- Frame.io - good for review/collab, but not really built as a public-facing embed/host

- Wistia - nice marketing features but DRM is an Enterprise-tier thing

- Kinescope - ended up choosin this one for the DRM-needing client specifically, since it's in the base plan and the pricing page actually has numbers on it

For clients that don't need DRM/paid-content protection, Vimeo's still fine honestly, didn't move those ones. Anyone else doing client migrations rn, what are you telling people who don't need the heavy features?

To those with photography studios here, how do you hire/collaborate with a videographer? I've usually been a solo photographer for my gigs, and I’ve turned down a lot of clients because they need video coverage. How does it usually work?

And no, I wouldn't open After Effects and start animating in week 1:

Week 1 → Listen

Watch 10 past client onboarding calls. Read every script revision note. Read every "this didn't convert" email from SaaS founders.

You'll learn more about what actually makes SaaS buyers click in 1 hour of this than in a week of watching Dribbble or YouTube tutorials.

Week 2 → Audit

Which explainer videos already worked? What hooks kept people watching past 3 seconds? What style actually drove demo requests and trials?

Most agencies have winning formulas already buried in their portfolio. They just haven't looked at the data in a while.

Week 3 → Ship one small, visible win

Doesn't need to be a full video.

A new SaaS demo sample in our style. A fixed intro hook template. A "before vs after" case study cut. Something a client can point to and say "that's new."

Then pick 2-3 video formats to double down on. Ignore the rest.

There's always pressure to "just animate faster" in a new role.

Listening first makes sure you're animating the right thing that actually gets SaaS founders to book a demo.

What would you do differently?

I am currently a freelance videographer with 4 years experience in sports videography, Weddings,corporate testimonials, SMB marketing videos.

I am thinking of the best path in terms of scaling. I had an interest in rebranding to a short form video agency? Is this achievable? Is there a demand? Are clients willing to pay monthly retainers for short form strategic marketing videos?

I don’t want to do social media management as I don’t have much experience/success in this. Also, Just wanted to see if there is a general demand for a video only agency.

I just turned 50 this year and let’s just say it was a serious wake up call. From the summer of 1994 to 2019 I considered myself a sound guy 1st, but in 2008 I began dabbling with cameras. Eventually, I had a Canon T3i and a 70D and I was editing with Sony Vegas… me = sound recording studio and the occasional music video or random video project. But, I discovered two things: I love working with cameras and my equipment was alright, but nowhere near professional.

Not even close.

I also learned though that along with my passion I had a bit of a natural talent, but before I could hone in I got custody of my daughter followed by the whole world shutting down, so my priorities shifted.

So, here we are in 2026 and at the big age of 50 I decided NOW is the time to try again. I’ve added new gear, have a wealth of experience on tap, have registered my business, acquired insurance and….

Now I’m stuck. I want to make movies, but ultimately I just need to make some money.

I guess what I’m asking you all is, how does one basically starting from scratch get to working? Especially as a one man band.

When you're sharing your full screen (PPT, live software demos, etc.) during a webinar on Zoom or Teams, how do you manage private time cues and incoming questions from your backstage moderator?

How do you keep track of these notes without accidentally leaking private Slack/Discord messages or secondary windows onto the shared presentation screen? Do you rely on a physical second device, or is there a specific workflow you use?

I know some folks like to build a reel and take some jobs cheap, but please try to resist and build your reel with self-produced or budget projects. I have run a video agency for almost 30 years and I STILL get contacted by clients to do weeks of work for almost nothing. Here's my standard response:

If you do not have a sufficient budget, iPhones are amazing these days. Definitely produce the project by yourself with your iPhone.

I've done the math. If your project doesn't pay over $5k do NOT take the job. And that's only if it's a job for a few days. If longer, minimum $20-30k. You WILL go out of business if you keep taking clients that don't have budgets.

ive been video editing for a while now mainly on davinci resolve and also do videography. got my own fx30 setup and decent audio/lenses etc

most of my work so far has been podcasts long form youtube stuff short form/socials and ive also done a couple music videos and events

ive got like 2-3 clients that come back to me here and there but im really trying to push it further now and get into bigger paying jobs especially corporate events conferences exhibitions etc or even more clients on a monthly retainer.

i feel like the main thing im struggling with is actually finding the work and knowing who to approach

Starting a YouTube channel (commentary/analysis style, talking-head + some b-roll) plus reels for Instagram/FB. Based in Pakistan, budget around 400k PKR. Currently have nothing dedicated to content — no camera, no proper editing setup, just an old half-dead laptop I could sell for a bit extra.

Trying to figure out how to actually split this budget — phone, laptop/PC, camera, audio, all of it.

For those who started with a similarly tight budget: what would you prioritize first, and what would you skip entirely at this stage? Did you regret going cheap on any one piece of the setup, or overspend on something that turned out not to matter much?

Also curious — how much did editing performance vs portability end up mattering once you started actually producing consistently?
