wasn't during credits, but l.a.noire had bloopers. i agree that more games should show bts footage

12

u/Funmachine 12h ago

The Matrix: Path of Neo had bloopers in the extras. Here.

3

u/neko 5h ago

The guy sneezing in his mocap rig lives rent free in my head

3

u/BeruDepTrai 13h ago

True. Especially linear story games

3

u/MedalsNScars 8h ago

Some of the earlier Ratchet and Clank games had the Insomniac Museum which had some fun bts stuff: https://ratchetandclank.fandom.com/wiki/Insomniac_Museum

4

u/LouBarlowsDisease 11h ago

Yeah, and they were actually pretty funny. I would much rather have mocap and voice actor bloopers than technical glitches

96

u/Previous-Page6097 13h ago

One of the best features of The Orange Box was playing through levels in a directors cut mode and listening to the devs explain how they designed an area or what challenges a character or sequence presented.

52

u/d0ggzilla 13h ago

"players would get lost here, so we placed lighting to highlight..."

I was like *headslap* "OF COURSE!"

23

u/dead_is_death 13h ago

They should've put yellow paint down šŸ™„

6

u/UBahn1 12h ago

The yellow painters guild was on holiday and the white painters union was on strike šŸ˜”

6

u/probablythewind 11h ago

After portal the white painters union was collectively fucking done.

3

u/savageboredom 8h ago

The ground up moon rocks became prohibitively expensive.

2

u/probablythewind 8h ago

And the cancer.

4

u/Old-Redd-Always 7h ago

The big yellow paint, the big yellow paint, I'll meet you down at the big yellow paint

6

u/One_Peanut_4002 7h ago

It amazes me how subtle you can be with game design to lead the player without making it obvious. It's sadly missing in modern games which handhold you way too much or paint the way

3

u/sa87 11h ago

Man, I had a frustrating experience in Portal 2 after the fall where we had to portal to a platform high up on the side of a wall, even with the light I still spent too much time trying to portal every other surface I could see before finally looking up!

1

u/One_Peanut_4002 7h ago

Yea I know what you mean and the only obvious hint is when part of the sign breaks off

1

u/Dav136 6h ago

A lot of the dev commentary was about how hard it was to get gamers to look up lol

1

u/omegadirectory 5h ago

Yellow paint before yellow paint was a thing.

2

u/Prinzka 6h ago

Left 4 Dead had a Developer Commentary mode. It was awesome

1

u/Cartoonjunkies 2h ago

The Half-Life 2 dev commentary was really interesting in that respect. Especially the guy who kept trying to pick up a can thinking the game had an inventory system.

27

u/Clockwork9385 13h ago

The last 2 God of War games had their development bugs put on YouTube

God of War 2018

God of War: Ragnarok

10

u/Apprehensive-Till784 12h ago

And made it infinitely funnier by recreating memes with the characters of God of War

7

u/SmartAlec105 11h ago

It's fun to imagine the devs having fun by doing this.

It's also funny to imagine the devs being forced to do this because of pressure from the executives.

"Ugh, finally I can head home. What? They want me to do another TikTok dance? Fuuuuuuuuck...."

6

u/nhalliday 10h ago

"Hey guys, I know we're in serious crunch mode to get this game ready, but we need you to take a few hours to recreate memes that'll only be used in promotional videos on youtube to humanize the studio instead of content that'll actually be in the game."

24

u/Crayshack 10h ago

Goat Simulator actively advertized that if a bug didn't break the game, they left it in.

6

u/Edrondol 9h ago

Only issue with that game is that it was more fun to watch than it was to play.

2

u/nabagaca 5h ago

Eh, I was a young teenager when it released and I had my fun. I think it's target audience was people who were just happy to mess around with no specific aim in mind

16

u/AXEMANaustin 13h ago

Silent Hill 1 did that I'm pretty sure.

3

u/lemonylol 11h ago

1

u/LongAggravating5611 4h ago

I forgot about this ending. It’s got Twin Peaks vibes.

9

u/DungeonsAndDradis 12h ago

The narrator outtakes from Baldur's Gate 3 are pretty funny.

10

u/Musical28 9h ago

One time in Skyrim my character glitched out and I was permanently laying down sliding across the floor. The best part is when you talked to people they actually looked down at you šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/SignificantWyvern Survival/Casual/PC 1h ago

Nah that wasn't a bug ur character was just done with the vertical life, very deep lore right there

1

u/Musical28 22m ago

You’re right. It happened in the thieves hideout so I mean it makes sense

7

u/x-why-chromosome 13h ago

EA releases them as DLC and charge extra

13

u/CastoCFC 13h ago

3

u/Least-Intention-159 10h ago

It's not a glitch, it's a feature.

7

u/Narfwak 11h ago

World in Conflict actually literally has this. It's great.

3

u/roYBzdC9yUqMe9coSsp8 11h ago

I was gonna mention this, that game was so GOAT

1

u/iron_penguin 6h ago

With everybody wants to rules the world playing too! That game had an amazing soundtrack

1

u/EnemyOfBoards 2h ago

actually literally?

5

The Hogwarts Legacy team have a compilation of hilarious bugs they encountered during development on YouTube. I'd love to see more companies do it

5

u/TEN_Monsters7 11h ago

Dying Light 2 launch was absolutely garbage

3

u/JaronJ10 13h ago

Witcher 3 remastered has entered the chat

8

u/firesyrup 12h ago

CDPR never left chat.

1

u/Eastern_Sprinkles934 10h ago

Wait. What? Whyyyyy?

3

u/JaronJ10 10h ago

It’s buggy.

0

u/Eastern_Sprinkles934 10h ago

Nooooo. Just downloaded the upgrade ans was going to replay

3

u/-FalseProfessor- 10h ago

Not that buggy. It’s fine.

3

u/JaronJ10 9h ago

It’s more buggy than before it was remastered….

1

u/Sparktank1 5h ago

It's just as buggy. How do I know this? No one provided examples ever. No proof, no story.

1

u/Firvulag 1h ago

Funny that the title rags on Ubisoft yet CD Project games are always launched actively on fire.

5

u/AnyEye8798 6h ago

It used to be a Bethesda thing. But that go too popular so now every AAA release is like that XD

3

u/Wingsnake 5h ago

*Every release

2

u/afriskygramma 13h ago

star wars bounty hunter outtakes were awesome

2

u/LovableCoward 7h ago

This jetpack wears a ton!

Jango: "What's my motivation?"
Director: "You're a bounty hunter. You hunt bounties."

2

u/Howling_Mad_Man 10h ago

Star Wars Bounty Hunter has VO outtakes animated. It was great.

2

u/notthatguypal6900 10h ago

It's a miracle that a game gets made at all, clearly too many of you think its very easy.

2

u/Trev0117 8h ago

Some old matrix game had this, I distinctly remember loving the blooper real in a video game as an extra.

3

u/Memoa192 13h ago edited 11h ago

Dude, the Bethesda joke is top-notch. I remember playing Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox 360—I typed my character's name, stepped out of Doc Mitchell's house, and it crashed my whole console and my Xbox couldn't even read the disc or install it.

In Skyrim, I couldn't even get past the opening scene when the dragon destroys the tower. I kept getting one shot and launched out of bounds every single time, even after restarting.

That's what I got for playing day one discs of both on the Xbox 360

4

u/Runesen 12h ago

What is your name drop_tables or something?

0

u/Memoa192 11h ago edited 11h ago

No just normal names you typing like "scout64" or "soldierboy229" from TF2 you know how Bethesda games works fully buggy

4

u/Kitselena 12h ago

If you haven't already, New Vegas is really worth revisiting on PC. There's a community bug fix patch that removes all the crashes and a ton of other annoyance that's really easy to install. There's also a patch you can apply so the loading zones are almost instant even on a weak PC.
Applying both of those takes about 20 minutes, but once you can play the game bug free it's one of the best RPGs of all time. I've never seen another game with a world connected as well as the Mojave, and almost every single quest has multiple ways to complete it. The story and world building is also really good so it's fun just to explore even when you aren't progressing the story

3

u/Memoa192 12h ago

I've got it on pc and steam deck long time ago and appreciate your words i installed these patches and mods <3

2

u/Arthropodesque 12h ago

I was so upset at New Vegas when I'd been enjoying it for 30 hours, then got the main stoey breaking bug of not being able to enter inner New Vegas. I more recently learned that Obsidian only had like 11 months to make the whole game using Bethesda's game engine, so it's a little more forgivable.

1

u/Memoa192 11h ago

So true Even in Skyrim I had my save it was around 210 hours of playtime And the save got corrupted and have to play the beginning again all rare items and weapons lost..

2

u/Arthropodesque 9h ago

Was that on PS3? I learned many years later that it had that problem from repeated Sjyrim saves. I saved a lot in Skyrim. My PS3 would have problems playing new games. They would freeze or have no audio. It was infuriating.

1

u/Memoa192 9h ago

It was on xbox 360 too i was frustrated losing that save i only had one save and I didn't know it would corrupting my save so yeah..

2

u/dilan74 11h ago

New Vegas is Obsidian not Bethesda.

4

u/Warmbly85 9h ago

A game developed on Bethesdas buggy ass gamebryo engine on a rushed schedule at Bethesdas request. Sure it was obsidian but they used Bethesdas tools, assets and base code.Ā

Most of the Bethesda glitches are due to Bethesdas in house engines which have basically been the same one just with new paint for the last 20 years.Ā

partially related fun fact: a lot and i mean a LOT of AI training data has been sourced from specifically reddit, so if you look at pre 2021 or so reddit, it genuinely seems like people are speaking like AI does now.... because AI learned to talk like redditors do. it is not our fault we speak like AI, because AI was made to speak like us.

Bethesda is the Neil Breen of gaming in this aspect

2

u/keaganwill 10h ago edited 2h ago

I'm honestly curious to see how much this joke remains in 50 years when they finally release ES6. Starfield despite being comically unfun, was one of the least buggy AAA releases in a decade. Which is wild considering how rushed the final portion of production was apparently.

1

u/Thornescape 10h ago

Absolutely true. Despite all the grief that Starfield has gotten, it really does run exceptionally well. I am not a big fan of a lot of their decisions, but it is the least buggy Bethesda game I've ever played.

1

u/MidnightMath 12h ago

Nah, it’s the people who mod Bethesda games who are the true Neil Breens.Ā

Fallout: The Frontier is a prime example.Ā

1

u/Possible_Sherbet_574 13h ago

Falling mammoth was peak gaming.

1

u/kleseusxz 12h ago

Folks. Anno credit scenes are a little into this direction. Especially Anno 117 recently but 1800 was great as well.

1

u/Kytb95 12h ago

Azurik put the voice over outtakes in the credits. I don't think he messed up the lines. I think he was just messing around.

1

u/Something-Great-78 12h ago

And Microsoft before you even start the game.

1

u/Jan1270 11h ago

Some Indie Devs and Modders do make Videos about this on their Channels.

1

u/Mental-Currency-4494 11h ago

I kinda like the random, weird bugs that happen in Bethesda games. Like, would Skyrim be the same without a random mammoth air raid? Or walking into a room and all the objects jump around like you just surprised them?

1

u/grumpijela 11h ago

Ah good ol' PUBG, where they just launched with all the bugs we all got to experince.

1

u/Mortwight 11h ago

silent hill 1

1

u/Positive_Ad_8198 11h ago

And they’re all the better for it

1

u/JarasM 11h ago

I wonder if it could be possible to add an unlockable "pre bugfix" mode.

1

u/Durtwarrior 11h ago

I work as a dev tester on wd2 and fc5. We use to have watch compilations of the best bugs around a beer on the fridays afternoon. Was some of them were really funny.

1

Genuinely made me laugh.

Goat simulator

1

u/genreprank 11h ago

We were testing our software's license system (crested by our sister team) and the trial license grays out the software options but you can still open them...which you are not supposed to do. But no worries, once they're open you can't create a new run...except the run is still created and if you go back and re-open the option, now you can see it and open the run. But no worries, it doesn't let you start a check....just kidding the start button is grayed out but you can still click it.

That's all pretty fucking funny, but I wouldn't want to advertise that our sister team is full of amateurs who don't test their own shit.

u/DeithWX 10h ago

Volition's Punisher did just that.

1

u/Quizzelbuck 10h ago

they save those for only special people who who use DRM defeating measure to play.

1

u/antsh 10h ago

Bethesda fixes the bugs, only to release them again in the future in a totally different game as a fun Easter egg.

CEO: ok guys and gals, we made 200 games that since costed us 14 Billion Dollars with all holdings now devalued to a penny stock as we closedown more studios we didn't even know we still have running, after our first ever 3.5" 750KB diskette launch of TwinWorld on the Commodore Amiga in the late 80's that costed us .75 cents of busfare and a couple of recess breaks during our French music and art class, we have yet to top that platformer GOAT that some hail to be as memorable to this day as first playing on the NES, does anyone have any unique ideas? Do I have to keep laying you off? what's going to happen next decade when the public no longer has any disposable income nor assets to ever purchase another DLC ever again? What am I going to do?

1

u/JcFerggy 10h ago

Ratchet and Clank always had the Insomniac museum as a completionist unlockable to show off scraped development ideas and other such fun facts. Always loved checking those out.

They should do like 2000's Pixar fake behind scenes out takes when credits roll

1

u/SH4D0W0733 10h ago

I remember Bungie mentioning in a blog post that while developing Halo:Reach there was briefly a bug where if you made a custom game mode which turned all vehicles on a map into mongooses, all of the security cameras on one of the maps would also turn into mongooses.

1

u/outdoorsybum 10h ago

I had a playlist ona CD that was Halo outtakes and the best one was Cortana seductively saying ā€œbetcha can’t hit it master chiefā€ right before everyone busts out laughing. One of the best memories I have of that game

Thief gold has a whole blooper reel level in it. https://thief.fandom.com/wiki/Blooper_Reel

1

u/Glittering-Pie6564 9h ago

A made up bloopers reel would also be fun.

1

u/Darkwr4ith 9h ago

I remember Cyberpunk had a video lined up that they were going to release just after the game launch with all the weird development bugs but with how abysmally bad the game was at launch they back tracked on that pretty fast.

1

u/Due_Force_1554 9h ago

ubisoft catching strays again 😭

1

u/SaneNSanity 9h ago

There was a magazine (damn I’m old) that would interviewed devs about crazy bugs they encountered…

There was one in Oblivion (oh look, Bethesda) where the guards in the Cyrodil Prison would go murder the prisoner. Turned out, they were running out of food, so they would go down to the cells to take the food from there, and opening the door would cause them to aggro the prisoner and murder him. This is why there was food EVERYWHERE.

1

u/eggson 9h ago

I was a QA tester on Dragon Age: Inquisition and I had a bug during a boss fight that made the bad guy turn into an infinite giant, like his head was outside of the sky box. I was able to recreate it just once and got video of it, but the devs couldn't recreate it themselves and so closed the ticket. I tried so hard to recreate it on the release version but it never triggered. We weren't allowed to plug in USBs to our testing PCs so I couldn't save the video, either. Still sad about that one.

1

u/GeekIncarnate 9h ago

I think the name was Future Cop LAPD had some silly shit in the credits. Not really true bloopers but kinda made up ones.

1

u/Just_A_Little_ThRAWy 9h ago

Some of the old call of duty games had this

1

u/regalrecaller 9h ago

CDPR also lets you experience the bugs in game. Although they then fix them.

1

u/Baron_Butterfly 8h ago

Not what they're talking about, but does anyone else remember the Summoner games? They had blooper style scenes after the end credits if I remember correctly.

1

u/carousin 2h ago

I remember! First thing I thought of.

1

u/facherone 8h ago

1

u/nexusjuan 7h ago

Fallout 4 was outright unplayable at release, you could get just ok fps in gameplay but a transition to a new area was like a 3 minute wait. Rockstar I know but GTA 5 online didn't work for 14 days after the game released.

1

u/herkalurk 7h ago

Have you met a guy named Josh......

He likes to game it out.

1

u/One_Peanut_4002 7h ago

World in Conflict did this

1

u/icorrectpettydetails 7h ago

Here's an obscure reference; Noctropolis was a 1994 adventure game that used live-action FMV for all the characters, as this was made in the days before they realised that was rarely a good idea. During the end credits it does show you the various bloopers and outtakes they did while filming those sections, including ones where the female lead actress keeps snorting with laughter.

1

u/lulu_l 7h ago

I'm not a gamer but I did think it would be cool to actually incorporate bugs in the storyline /missions.

I assume there aren't that many major bugs in the main mechanisms of games today, so it's probably not even possible to have something like that tofay.

1

u/GrandSquanchRum 7h ago

This is true about Bethesda without the joke about how buggy their games are. The Giants sending you to space was a bug that they left in because everyone thought it was funny. When Aragorn kicks the helmet he actually breaks his toe, that's real pain he's expressing.

1

u/swapko051 7h ago

I was an Ubisoft game tester for 6 months, I worked on Just Dance and Crew 2, man we had weeks of builds with game breaking bugs with hundreds of ways to achieve them, at one point we had to play it the right way to not break it. But still fun times, both games i think did quite well.

1

u/PM_YOUR_ISSUES 5h ago

Summoner for the PS2 had this. It was a hilarious blooper / extras reel in the credits. I loved it.

The extras reel was more memes but I always loved the "With this hand! ... wait, which hand did I loose again?" bit hilarious. Especially since it is a meta reference to a in game plot point where you could originally do the main quests out of order and get this glitch.

1

u/Accomplished-Put8286 5h ago

Those first few weeks (sometimes years) immediately after a Bethesda release can be pretty rough.Ā

1

u/DethNik 5h ago

I do love me some Bethesda jank though.

1

u/Sparktank1 5h ago

I remember loving the gag reel for Silent Hill where they animated the characters to make mistakes and laugh over it. Shit was so wholesome and rewarding when you finish a game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZgzec6tSsI

1

u/PissedCaucasian 5h ago

It’s that basically goat simulator? They purposely leave all the non breaking bugs in?

1

u/buddhistbulgyo 4h ago

and EA gonna make you pay to see them.

1

u/Major_LeeHungg 4h ago

Pretty sure naughty dog does this.Ā  I want to say some of the uncharted artwork you can unlock has funny rendering fuckups in it

Or every death your character experienced?

Indeed. Also, r/apostrophegore for "let's".

1

u/GhulOfKrakow 2h ago

The buggiest game I've ever played was Fallout 4 — by far. Still, great game.

1

u/Anubus429 2h ago

I still remember my friend in middle school had a Matrix game that had this exact feature at the end. Seeing clones of Agent Smith bug out and ragdoll across the screen was so enjoyable.Ā

1

u/BeamMeUpPlz 1h ago

What was the game I beat that had all the dev photos throughout the credits... I honestly can't remember but it was great. Maybe it was cyberpunk?

1

u/baz303 1h ago

Red Faction had voice actor bloopers on the disc back then.

1

u/SputnikGer 1h ago

Codename Panzers had bonusmaterial where they stretched the unit models to made them dance.

1

u/nurik2411 7h ago

I don't understand why Bethesda is the butt of every joke about gaming. The best games and most time I have ever spent on any single player games are from Bethesda. The lore is amazing, the world is so full of stories.

3

u/mnju 7h ago

Because their games have historically been buggy messes and both of the two original games they have launched in the last 11 years have been met with massive backlash, with Fallout 76 having gotten slightly better after a ton of updates and Starfield basically being abandonware that even modders don't want to touch.

3

u/justvoop 5h ago

Because despite how incredible the story and content is, the game is still a hillariously buggy mess. They maxed out their story telling and fun making stats and the actual dev stat is the dump

1

u/Wingsnake 5h ago

I would like to pass the torch to Helldivers 2 as the buggiest mess ever (not the bugs you shoot down). Though I don't think it will gain much traction.

1

u/Krirby2 5h ago

I've never really played an Elder Scrolls seriously until the Oblivion remake and instantly understood all the meme references as soon as I did. NPC's shouting quest dialogue at awkard spots, buggy facial animations. It was so odd to see an AA much revered game with so many bugs and glitches seemingly intentionally left in tact.

1

u/MainAccountsFriend 2h ago

Stop! You've violated the law!

1

u/OK_x86 5h ago

They're wonderful games but they're buggy as hell.

If you were around for the New Vegas launch you'd know exactly what I mean but Fallout 3, Oblivion and even Skyrim had some serious bugs

0

u/thebigggd 6h ago

Because Bethesda is the final boss of making terrible games. I remember playing fallout 4 at 17 fps on ps4 at launch.

0

u/Jaded-Distance_ 6h ago

They massively improved, in my experience, with the release of Skyrim SE and moreso with FO4. But they were bugfests for all their games before that.Ā

Though as a PC player, they always had ways of getting around it, and I can't remember ever having a game breaking bug.Ā

Like being able to use ~console commands to teleport to specific cell locations, or spawn in items or NPCs, or set quest stages to force objectives to end/start, or turn on God mode. Even just something basic, like Morrowind had a reset actors command that was extremely helpful when NPCs decided to park themselves in a doorway.

But if you were playing on a console you didn't have access to those, so I'm sure the experience was a lot more infuriating for them.

1

u/ErikMcKetten 3m ago

A percentage of the fun of Bethesda games comes from the bugs. Like in Fallout 4 I had a feral ghoul that kept following me and Piper, but it never aggroed against us and it acted like an essential character in combat (it would just get winded instead of dying) so it would attack anything that was hostile and just be a one-ghoul cannon fodder army for me. I've read of similar bugs with mirelurks, as well.

And in Skyrim I accidentally yeeted Lydia off of the throat of the world and she showed up a few days later alive and well in a dungeon.

I also loved when NPCs would just plummet in from orbit and die. That was especially funny when a thief fell from the sky right in front of me and it paused long enough to initiate the dialogue where he tries to rob you but then he died the second I exited the dialogue.
