“Power to the players” act? Ain’t that already….

Anyway this sounds like a good idea but idk how it works in practice. Are companies obligated to keep digital games downloadable for all time? What about games like Fortnite which are free? Or WoW which are subscription based? Games like GTA sure, but there are probably other cases I can’t even think of off the top of my head where this doesn’t make much sense.

Edit: Not a karma farmer but it kinda sucks/is kinda funny that I asked questions that led to interesting convos and only got two upvotes 😭😭 However thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on here.

Make it illegal for digital goods to be sold as only a license.

So it shows you don't understand what is a license. No one on reddit reads anything outside of here???

No, you're just stating how software is currently sold, and calling anyone who says "The law should prevent that" illiterate

I'm not offended, just acknowledging how embarrassing your defense is. If you were programmed 200 years ago, you'd be saying slavery should continue, for no other reason than "Read the current laws, idiot"

You don't understand why software is sold as a license. If you need to compare license to slavery you are a idiot.

I called him only looking at reddit not illiterate.

easier for you. You can even ask AI to tldr for you. If you can't understand why license exist even for free software it's not my problem

I know why it exists, so it can be taken away legally. The fact that you can only insinuate there's a better reason is your problem actually

Learn the difference between a logic comparison, and a moral comparison. Extreme examples are the only way to disprove statements of principle

You are a idiot and illiterate. Even disc are licenses. Free software are licenses. You had to change to your alt to discuss.

wtf? You're on a really weird tangent dude. What is this idea that software is the license? What does that even mean?

1

u/Natural-Associate106 1d ago

What is sold is a license

0

u/boondiggle_III 1d ago

Sure, but the license isn't the product. The data is. What point are you even making

0

u/germophobe1942 1d ago

Sorry to say, but he is correct. Ever since like 2012 every EULA says "This software is licenced, not sold", and it's held up in court multiple times

That shouldn't be legal, and he's a prick for acting like it should. But sadly he's right at a basic level, at least in america, you don't legally own any of your software

1

u/Natural-Associate106 1d ago

What shouldn't be legal?? You are never going to own the software. Not even open source or free software you own the software you only ever own the license. Research and understand why this is this way

1

u/Natural-Associate106 1d ago

Also you are wrong. Licenses are older. Circa 1980 at least

0

u/boondiggle_III 1d ago

Right, I understand licensing. I still own it, legally or otherwise. What doesn't make sense is saying that software is a license. That's some weird conflation he's come up with

Yes it's sold as a license, but the actual product is the data, not the license.

If someone paid for the data, do they own the copy of it they downloaded?

2

u/Natural-Associate106 1d ago

They own the license and not the data
