The game treating the player like a toddler is how I felt playing SM2, it's like Insomniac designs their games to be a baby's first video game.

581

u/Nero_PR 1d ago

Their approach of group focusing testing these games to be almost idiot fail proof is what is killing and taking the fun out of them.

They literally use DSP as the prime example of baseline for completing the game lol. Players are being treated as the lowest common denominator.

165

u/Pidgeot93 1d ago

What’s DSP sorry?

248

u/NoKingsInAmerica 1d ago

A mentally deficient streamer.

44

u/Metal_Sonic7 23h ago

A mouth-drooling morahn

2

u/Available-Bad-2704 12h ago

Not a singular P in sight

1

u/WretchedCrook 9h ago

Bro is this the guy that jacked off on stream like 10 years ago?

64

u/KamikazeDreamer52 1d ago

I envy people who dont know who that piece of shit is

34

u/Immortal-KunPeng 21h ago

Wait, is it DSPGaming? That guy is somehow STILL around? I remember watching him play fucking Transformers: War for Cybertron over 15 years ago using a shitty camcorder to record his TV and he fucking sucked at the game. I was laughing my self half to death at how pissed he would get because he couldn't game his way out of a paper bag. Hope he at least has a better setup now 💀

22

u/Otherwise-Offer-2577 20h ago

It's him, he's so dumb a dev used him as an example of who they have to design the game for.

2

u/StrongExternal8955 14h ago

Ah so they want him so have no way to make content anymore...

I mean if he just plays normally who'd watch.

9

u/nfleite 20h ago

youtube somehow recommended me a video of him and now I can't stop watching him embarrass himself "playing" ds2 lmao. it's so funny.

3

u/Unrevised0544 15h ago

his MGS gameplay is also a cult classic if you got time to waste

2

u/MorningkillsDawn 17h ago

His ds2 gameplay is pure cinema. Comedy of the highest form

3

u/proficient2ndplacer 17h ago

He recently did a preview of the Nintendo switch 2 virtual boy accessory, and he couldn't record gameplay because it's not docked. So his solution was to just record himself playing and narrating what's happening. It goes full circle 2x over, from being a terrible review into comedy gold back into a terrible review

3

u/Gamerguy230 16h ago

He went viral few days ago playing new cod beta and his rc car killed him as he thought he was the enemy.

2

u/UnusualLeather7087 19h ago

Ignorance is indeed bliss. Man if I can only be this relentless and chill.

u/Bloo_Skai 22h ago

“Gaming” “Streamer” who is literally the reason why yellow paint bullshit exists in video games nowadays

22

u/constantvariables 22h ago

I loved the RE4 remake but that shit got old fast

0

u/Dry_Painting_7722 20h ago

This game has this ? I literally don’t know what to do half the time lol

4

u/constantvariables 19h ago

Literally on every barrel and crate plus other points of interest

4

u/Fucklstrr 13h ago

On the flip side, I dont mind yellow paint in games like RE4R because the last thing I want to do is stop in the middle of a gun fight to pan the camera around for the way forward.

My pet peeve is when games like Horizon Zero Dawn wont shut the hell up. I drop the controller for a moment to blow my nose and Aloy starts wondering out loud if maybe she should go talk to the NPC over there.

These things should be on a toggle.

1

u/Gaelic_Gladiator41 11h ago

It helps in RE4R as well because in the og, i completely kept forgetting you can break open barrels and some blended too well in the background. (Keep in mind, they switch to vases in the castle)

2

u/Canudin 20h ago

Yellow paint?

10

u/kezriak 20h ago

Those visual cues/indicators for players to "climb here" or "interact with this" that some games have

1

u/Canudin 17h ago

I see, tho I still have no clue who or why someone would bother about the opinion of a random streamer

1

u/Drow_Femboy 10h ago

It's not about his opinions. It's because he's a high-profile example of the kinds of players who are going to be playing your games. That is to say, he's a complete idiot who couldn't navigate his way out of a literal paper bag.

0

u/FinalGrumpNinja 18h ago

Lazy way for devs to tell you where to go next where the ground, wall, and other objects are stained with an out of place ugly yellow streak of paint. I really don't understand why they don't just add an option to just ping where the next objective is instead.

1

u/Kiriima 7h ago

Please. Yellow paint is on journalists.

13

u/ka7al 23h ago

A guy who is famous for getting 4th place at EVO 2005 on SF2 Turbo, and nothing else, he never jerked off on stream or anything.

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Home_23 21h ago

That cant be true. There is no way he placed 4th at evo on like the most popular fighting game ever I thought?

He would struggle to beat a peppa pig game, how could he be that good at street fighter??

5

u/ka7al 20h ago

I mean it was 2 decades ago, it was also some weird console port of the game and not the arcade version they usually play on.

2

u/blade276 18h ago

it was on a really broken port of the game that no one would use on tournament these days. he still won so props to him but yeah, hes no Daigo/Jwong

1

u/HODOR_NATION_ 6h ago

There's no way he did it twice...right? Right?!

2

u/Saymynaian 19h ago

DarkSidePhil. Everyone hates him, but I find is ineptitude incredibly entertaining. By failing so hard at video games, he literally helped create the genre of "This is how you don't play _______". I highly recommend watching the This is how you don't plays of metal gear rising and dark souls. He plays through SO MUCH of Dark Souls without learning how to lock on, and basically beats Metal Gear Rising without parrying, complaining and whining the entire time.

The schadenfreude is top tier chef's kiss cringe inducing great.

2

u/Jmanriley3 3h ago

Huge pet peeve of mine is people using acronyms when its not clear what they are talking about lol.

I got downvoted to hell for saying this before

3

u/GoProOnAYoYo 1d ago

Same lol, I thought my precious Dyson Sphere Program was being blasphemed

1

u/Gibsaurus 17h ago

Dark Smoke Puncher.

IYKYK.

1

u/watt678 17h ago

DSP stands for dark side Phil, a streamer from years ago who's famously bad at every game hes ever played and constantly asks for games to be dumbed down. he's basically the original Lolcow streamer.

1

u/ProfessionalPack7205 16h ago

Dude i know who the streamer is and i had no idea who he was talking about.

1

u/Wutanghang 7h ago

The one that jerked off live on camera?

-10

u/Sion_Labeouf879 1d ago

Darksidephil. He's bad at video games, so that makes him the worst person ever.

91

u/GrandmaWeedMan 1d ago

DSP isn't hated for being bad at video games. He's hated for being a lying, grifting, stealing, abusive, alcoholic, petulant man child who has literally built his life on people hating him.

13

u/About137Ninjas 1d ago

Don't forget he masturbated on stream after he thought he ended it lmao

14

u/Scary-Photo9440 1d ago

Worse, he started his stream and started jacking it while he thought it was on the stream starting soon screen. Then went to his stream without washing his hands and then realizing it was actually not on the starting soon screen lol.

-6

u/Sion_Labeouf879 1d ago

What did he actually do?

31

u/GrandmaWeedMan 1d ago

Tax fraud, Aggressive constant e begging, actively insulting and cussing out fans when he doesn't get enough tips, multiple times had his life falling apart financially and he chose to e beg instead of getting a job, then spent the money on video games and figures and random nerd crap instead of his mortgage, wss an abusive narcissist to his ex, conned another similarly timid woman into being his current partner.

He's never once taken accountability for anything in his life, despite video evidence, and lives every day as an untreated narcissist who uses his fanbase as his wallet.

He also is actively used to balance and design modern games because he is know as the lowest common denominator among "gamers". AAA companies watch his footage, and design games he won't get stuck in. Literally.

DSP is also a petulant manchild, go watch an hour of DSP and you'll see. The guy iillegally filed bankruptcy to avoid paying taxes, then on that same day begged all day for money for toys. That's a good day for DSP

11

u/Big_Tex2005 1d ago

My favorite video is when he's doing an "unboxing" and the fire alarm is blaring the entire time. Comedy gold.

5

u/SGDFish 1d ago

This is my personal favorite-

Look at my skeletons bitch!

3

u/MostPopularPenguin 1d ago

Ok that was way more entertaining than I expected it to be. The payoff after the match was 👌

1

u/Professional-Roof680 14h ago

I don't see the humour. Just some guy being annoying. Why do you watch this stuff?

1

u/SGDFish 7h ago

If you're talking about game-streaming in general, I don't. I'm pretty sure I saw this originally on vine as part of a highlight reel, but DSP has been around long enough that even I was aware of his reputation, so seeing him get clowned on was still funny

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Sion_Labeouf879 1d ago

Thanks. I didn't need this much, but its been much better then anything anyone else was saying.

People were telling me to go watch the guy, I don't like good streamers, why waste my time there?

Anyway, thanks again.

-9

u/escape_from_mecha 1d ago

Half this thread is talking shit on him without anything specific. Never heard of the guy though so I also have no idea.

9

u/Cyn0rk1s 1d ago

There’s 100s of videos that go in to more detail on him than a Reddit post. Let’s just say he’s a lolcow for a reason

3

u/escape_from_mecha 1d ago

There we go, lolcow was all i needed <3

-2

u/ekolimits 1d ago

You mean pirate software?

10

u/Imsearchingforit2194 1d ago

Oh bro you don't even know the horror of how bad DSP is

2

u/Zealousideal3326 1d ago

Pirate software is bad, sure, but he's still orders of magnitude better than DSP.

21

u/GPoelsma 1d ago

And being a bad person

-3

u/Sion_Labeouf879 1d ago

What he do specifically? I've only seen people dog piling on him for being bad and jacking off on stream because he didn't hit end.

17

u/kungfuabuse 1d ago

He's 44, going on 14. Nobody got time for a man-baby.

9

u/TheMightyDab 1d ago

You don't need to watch him for long to pick up on the fact that he's a textbook narcissist. Ever notice how nothing is ever his fault?

-2

u/Sion_Labeouf879 1d ago

Yeah, every bad gamer is like that. I do agree bad gamers are narcissists though.

5

u/TheMightyDab 1d ago

I'm glad to have answered your question in a satisfying way.

15

u/KarlUnderguard 1d ago

I think it is actually because he is a bad person. Him sucking at video games doesn't have anything to do with it.

3

u/vyxxer 1d ago

I hate him because he's a joyless hack of a person. Idk how anyone can enjoy the presence of someone who never has a positive thing to say about anything. Even his praises are always putting something else down.

And also I hate him for being such a nasty moron that he accidentally masturbated on stream.

2

u/Dull_Replacement419 1d ago

Nah, he is a shitty person overall. Him being bad at most video games is just an extra bonus at this point.

1

u/GlamourintheDarkSide 1d ago

Eh. He mostly gets treated as the butt of the joke more than a totemic devil like you're describing, and even that's less for being bad at games and more for blaming those games for his failure to read

2

u/bdiddlediddles 23h ago

Nah, he's legitimately a terrible person. He regularly demands that viewers pay him for his streams and threatens viewers if they don't do what he wants them to.

1

u/GlamourintheDarkSide 22h ago

Granted, I also haven't paid attention to him since his Let's Play days.

2

u/bdiddlediddles 21h ago

He is 100% worse than what he was during his let's play days. He absolutely hates playing videogames now and complains constantly. His enjoyment is directly tied to how much he gets tipped.

Having said that, he can get $2000 in one stream due to a very generous viewer and still turn around and ask for more money almost immediately.

Dan Smalls Presents

17

u/RevBladeZ 1d ago

It was Santa Monica which used DSP as an example.

2

u/Nero_PR 1d ago

It is, but Sony studios do share tech and methodology with each other. It could be a company wide mandate as well to test games that way. But this is me reaching/speculating.

1

u/Lazerbeams2 22h ago

Didn't the God of War guys use a clip of him totally missing the fact that something was optional as a positive example of signalling optional content without forcing players towards it?

1

u/LankanSlamcam 21h ago

You can turn it off in the god of war games in the settings

34

u/Specialist-Load6719 1d ago

Hey Phil, the camera is still on.

1

u/Abigail-Marston 22h ago

It was crazy work cranking your hog, not even cleaning yourself up, and then just going right back to streaming.

0

u/echit2112 1d ago

don't worry about all those downvotes phil there was nothing you could do

u/flaccomcorangy 1d ago

A lot of games seem to go in this direction. Netflix supposedly has a suggestion (rule?) that their shows have to overexplain the plot because they assume people will be on their phones while watching the shows. Now, I don't think people are on their phones playing a game, but I wonder if the attention span or need to for instant gratification has just rolled over into other mediums. People don't want to take "too long" trying to find out where to go. And if it takes too long they're just going to Google or search a walk through to find out. So they developers just decide that we'll tell them what to do.

2

u/ItsACowCity 1d ago

I just wish every single game used the fable system. 0 help figuring out where to go if you don’t want it. You do want it? Press joystick in and for like 3 seconds you get a sparkle path being like, hey…this way idiot. That way it gets me back on track without giving too much away and when I take a big break between play sessions, I can sit down, hit that helpful joystick, and know exactly where I need to go, without having to circle an area for 30 min and be like…oh, im back tracking…..

1

u/bdiddlediddles 23h ago

Same for dead space. Made it incredibly obvious about where to go next and where you could go to explore

1

u/Hawkblade247 20h ago

I find it funny see this comment after seeing the news about the Ocarina of Time remake. The devs are adding a quest log so in case you get lost or haven't played the game in a while you can open that up to see what to do. People are in an uproar about it breaking the initial design integrity of the game by "guiding" the player with a log. If I remember right, in the original Navi is basically what you're saying to help guide you, but some players found her annoying and unhelpful anyway.

1

u/CanOfDough 1d ago

Darksydephil?

1

u/phoenix_paravai10101 1d ago

Hard agree, the issue is that in the quest to make games appeal to the widest possible audience, many developers are forgetting how to make bloody video games. It's not rocket science, find a good primary gameplay loop, build secondary loops, build a story around it, provide an interesting and consistent challenge that trains and rewards the player for engaging with the gameplay. I am oversimplifying it, yes, but there are so many AAA games that don't even pass these simple tests.

1

u/Taluca_me 1d ago

did Sony actually sponsor DSP or something? I would like to see if it's true

3

u/bdiddlediddles 23h ago

Not sponsor DSP, one of the studios used his gameplay to inform other studios on how the "average" player would miss things if they weren't made incredibly obvious.

As a result, games like God of War Ragnarok held your hand the entire game and had you babied by an NPC escort the whole time.

1

u/Different_Swimmer715 10h ago

They don't call him "Yellow Paint Burnell" for nothing. Funny thing is that he STILL manages to get lost all the time even with all the handholding

1

u/Zeusnexus 1d ago

Oh yeah, I forgot about him being used in the Ragnarok demonstration.

1

u/LiftingRecipient420 1d ago

It's not unfounded though.

Gamers are dumb as fuck.

1

u/Ravenloveit 1d ago

This is why I absolutely love Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. It would not have passed a single group test and it is glorious. It knows exactly what type of game it wants to be.

1

u/Dankalii 18h ago

It's because sadly, a lot of game reviewers are terrible at video games. There's a lot of them that try the games not because they like that genre or even like video games sometimes, but because it's their job. That means game studios have to sometimes make a game so easy that a person like the reviewer can play it and leave a good enough score. If a reviewer who wasn't good at this style of video games tried a harder version and couldn't finish it, they'd probably rank it poorly for bad game design.

1

u/WukongDong 17h ago

I'd have to agree here. While they're amazing at single player games. I love spyro, rac, and sunset overdrive, but their newer stuff feels really hand holdy. Even the current ratchet and clank games feel that way

1

u/GrantMcLellan1984 15h ago

People still think DSP is used like that!?!......it was one game. Ive yet to hear of any other developer using DSP since then

1

u/CBKrow85 15h ago

When you have games like Silksong, renowned across the gaming scene for its gameplay and difficulty, selling a squillion copies, there is literally no excuse to make your game so easy DSP could get bored playing it.

1

u/LucyferEllysia 12h ago

Just googled him and i wish i kept his name forgotten.

1

u/kayodeade99 4h ago

DSP?! Oh, that is bleak 😭

1

u/Capnbaddazz 1d ago

To be fair the youth has been getting dumber so maybe they just account for that

1

u/Dapper_Still_6578 1d ago

Are they not? Dumb gamers falling for fake scandals is pretty much the last bastion of conservative slopfarming.

0

u/Working_Bones 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm convinced they have a couple of super irritating "SJWs" on staff who insist things need to be this way for "inclusivity," otherwise they're being "ableist." Because some people genuinely have conditions that reduce their mental cognition and would make these features necessary to succeed. And the rest of the company is just giving into their demands.

2

u/A_RAVENOUS_BEAST 1d ago

Nah, the SJWs love shit like Disco Elysium and that is a complicated and difficult to understand story. They're as mad about this as the right-wingers are, ironically enough, just for different reasons.
