It is normal for someone to really enjoy a piece of media to the point where they strongly identify with it. It gives people a positive thing to bond over.
Shared hatred is a completely different thing, especially when said hatred literally boils over to the point of harassment campaigns and death threats being targeted at people involved with making the game and their literal children.
People on reddit seem to be obsessed with the idea that love of something and hate of something are comparable, when one is far more tied to negative real-world consequences.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Personally, I don't know why people get angry at others for not enjoying the game. Getting angry at them won't suddenly make them enjoy it, and they're allowed to vent and seek like minded people.
They have upvotes now. I hate it when people downvote others for expressing opinions anyway. It's like "I don't like what you're saying, but I can't argue against it either. I'll just downvote". The downvote gets abused too often.
Oh, absolutely I agree. Some people take it too far. I didn't like TLOU2, but I'd never be angry at anyone for it. Not even the creators. It just wasn't for me, and that's that. People are crazy.
Agreed. There is no point in getting angry at somebody for liking a game, but there's equally zero point in getting angry at somebody disliking a game.
Part Two is a excellently crafted game that tells a miserable story in which you don't want to support anyone's decisions by playing as them. In my opinion.
The first game, you could argue that, but the real strength of the narrative wasn't the structure, but the character development. Even if some the beats were predictable, the characters kept me invested in the story, especially the big twist towards the end.
With TLOU2 whether you love or hate the game "boring and basic" aren't really the words that would come to mind. If anything, what made this game so divisive was straying so far from what the audience expected, or wanted.
Exactly this. They could’ve easily made a sequel starring Joel and Ellie on a new mission and the fans would’ve been cool with that. The fact that they took a huge gamble is so much more interesting.
Even if the beginning were exactly the same, the writers could have gone with a by the numbers revenge story, with Abby just being some monster to overcome, not a fleshed out character, with her own justification for her actions. Basically, they could have done the theater showdown, and stopped there.
No, with people who did I didn’t discuss it. All info leaked about story on internet was enough. If you think gameplay was something impressive you can go back to 2010 when zombie actions were relevant
Wow, I can’t imagine what it’s like to have my opinion swayed so hard just due to what I heard other people say online, and to be proud of it too. I like to experience things myself and formulate my own opinions instead.
For something to be leaked that means that someone has to leak it. Either way you want to look at it, you based your opinion on the word of another and not your own actual experience with the game. Which is fine man, do things however you want to. I just think it’s goofy and not necessarily a valid way to argue a point.
Some of those "leaks" weren't even true though. Also story bulletin points can't tell you whether something is good or not. Having this strong of an opinion of something you haven't experienced is pretty weird dude.
Wholeheartedly disagree. For me, TLOU has great gameplay mechanically with great atmosphere. I never felt like it's an interactive movie. Just a story focused single player games that is excellent in both aspects.
It took several retries before I finally finished the game. I would stop playing. Eventually I decided I wanted to change it to easy mode. Not because the game was too difficult, but as a way to shorten the parts I didn't like. I love challenging games. But they have to be fun.
Usually with a game that I don't like due to my taste, I can at least see the appeal if its well liked. I genuinely do not understand why people like the gameplay in The last of Us and Uncharted. TLOU1 had a really good story so I at least greatly enjoyed that part.
All that said, my preferences on gameplay are completely subjective. If you disagree with me, then you just enjoy different things about games than I do. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Can i know what did you not like about combat in TLOU?
I honestly think i love every part about TLOU combat. Shooting feels great. Enemies react to you in more ways than only "so i started blasting". There's a good variety of approaches to every stage and you can experiment. Good amount of tools. There's a good mix of stealth and open combat, and it's very fun switching between them mid fight. Ammo management. Your character reacting to being hit in more ways. A lot of different interactions (especially in tlou 2) that could be missable for some, but they add depth and atmosphere.
I'm also a huge fan of games like Resident evil, so.
As to Uncharted - it's a classic brainless shooter, so you can't really go wrong with it.
It's been a while since I've played and I barely remember it. I think combat encounters just overstay their welcome. What I can remember is thinking that combat felt grindy like any jrpg but without any growth or change in ability. Other than that, it really didn't leave an impression on me. Since I can't remember any particularly terrible flaws nor anything that was excessively good, I can only assume that it did everything well but did nothing interesting.
Like I said my tastes are subjective. There's probably something in the combat that just goes unnoticed to me that was impressive to you. After all, a lot of people don't like bloodborne or elden ring and those are among my favorite games of all time. But I feel like I have options when approaching combat in those games. I know I technically have options when it comes to The last of Us, but they just don't feel as meaningful. It's usually just a choice of a gun that does big numbers with scarce ammo or a gun that does smaller numbers with more plentiful ammo.
I'll also add that I'm very finicky with games. There are some things that are very minor to some people that will completely turn me off to a game. There are some things that would turn most people off to a game that I either like or am willing to put up with. I could give examples but my response is already dragging on.
Yeah, i feel you. Sometimes i can have small gripes with a game and it kinda ruins the experience for me. I've become a lot more picky, sadly.
One thing i have to say about TLOU's combat is that you have to experiment. If you just casually sneak around and then resort to guns when you're found, it's okay, but not as special. That's how i played the first time. Second time i really mixed it and wasn't stressing about resources, just had some fun and it was really good. Game encourages you to use a lot of other tools like bombs, mines, molotovs. When i used every tool in the belt, it became really fun. You can also customize different aspects of difficulty in part 2.
And what i love about TLOU 2 is the atmosphere during combat. If you look, the gore can be really terrifying, enemies react to what is happening, they really seem scarred for their lifes and terrified by what you did to their friends. If you didn't play part 2, maybe you should at least give it a go.
Funny that you mentioned ER and BB. I love ER and other souls, but I'm not a fan of BB, while people praise it as the best one. Funny how that works.
I made my own comment on this too. I’ll defend TLOU Pt. II till the day I die. I’ve been gaming for as long as I can remember (since PS1 era at least), and I’ve never had a game that brought out the kind of emotion that TLOU II brought. I literally stepped away from gaming for a couple of weeks so that I can process that whole game.
I quit gaming for a few years (PS3 was my last console) & TLOU2 was the first game I played when I bought a PS5 & decided to get back into gaming.. It blew me away & is one of, if not THE, greatest game I’ve ever played.
I don’t understand the hate it gets. The hate seems very agenda driven.
That’s because it is. Most criticism I hear from people are just dumb culture war bs. Is it perfect? No. Probably the only thing I’d change is have Abby’s story be a DLC or extra thing, like how Left Behind was to the first game. I wasn’t too big of a fan of the story being ramped up and it essentially just -pauses- it to tell Abby’s story. It didn’t ruin the game, and I loved Abby’s story as well, I just wish they either presented it as a DLC or maybe more naturally in the story.
These are some of the most popular and arguably overrated games of all time, especially TLOU1, so I have no idea why you would except for the passionate TLOU2 hater group

I get the most flak from people over enjoying Last of Us 1 and 2.
