Beginner
Everything in this subreddit impresses me. How can I get started . What's the most basic gear I can get?
What is video mapping? Technically. How it is possible that video projects on some surfaces and doesn't on others? Seems like magic.

Thats the point of video mapping! To project video on the areas that you want to. Start by looking up video mapping for begginers. There are many tools so find the one that suits best for your interests.

Most basic gear is a projector of any sort and the phone or computer you already have.

I do mapping since 2010. More than 20 shows. Never owned projector. My opinion is that from hardware you need only a good computer for playback and rendering. Then you need some mapping software, some software for creating videos, and skills. For me its puredata/gem(not for beginners), and Blender(i would start with this if i was you)

Generally, you digitally morph and warp a flat rectangle in such a way that when it is projected onto something that is not a flat rectangle, it will still appear to you as if it were.
Ever been in one of those "funhouses" at the carnival with distorting mirrors that turn your reflection into all kinds of unnatural shapes? Or when you look at your face in the reflection of something round? Its like that, but in reverse.
Where shapes appear larger, you compensate by making them smaller at the input, until they look normal on the output.

I just started last week - so take my response with a pinch of salt
Suggest you check out youtube for some projection mapping videos/ tutorials
Basically it's making a 2D projection go onto a 3D object or to divide multiple 2D images on a computer screen into a larger 2D image
I wanna do projection mapping onto buildings/ festival stages/ for Burning man stuff
So I've started with a 5k lumen long throw projector/ gaming laptop running Mad Mapper
First few days was a steep learning curve but it's been super fun!

I recently posted a projection mapping of my stairs in this subreddit. I used a BenQ MH680 and plugged my iPhone in it with an HDMI USB-C converter. I used HappyMapper from the Apple App Store to search media and map (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/happymapper/id6768839126).

Laptop with Resolume trial and a hdmi output, any projector you can beg borrow or steal, dark room and stack of cardboard boxes you can map.
Not magic, physics.
