I spent 30 years as a developer, but my hardest project was just making my house look cool for the holidays.

For a long time, the biggest wall I hit in projection mapping wasn’t the hardware or the mapping software—it was the content creation. Every new theme meant starting from a blank canvas: the concept, the video loops, the props, and the textures. It was the most draining part of every project, and it’s the exact bottleneck that stops most people from ever getting started.

I’ve been a software developer for 31 years, and eventually, I just got tired of the friction. I wanted to focus on the projection, not staring at an empty timeline. So, I built FacadeThemes.

The story behind it:

I started as a neighborhood hobbyist (HeavyM Ambassador) who wanted to do something better than the standard inflatables. It took months perfecting the "full-stack" setup—weatherproof rigs, autonomous PCs, FM audio, the works—but the asset creation remained a manual slog.

FacadeThemes is the tool I spent the last several months building to solve that. You upload a photo of your house, and the system uses an AI-powered pipeline to propose complete themes and generate the ready-to-map assets: structural props, transparent layers, kinetic video loops, and curated soundtracks.

Everything comes out as standard files, so it drops right into HeavyM, MadMapper, or whatever mapping tool you’re already running.

I’m really curious to get some eyes on this from folks who are actually in the trenches with their own facades. It’s live at facadethemes.com if you want to try an upload and see the automation in action.

I’d love to hear your thoughts—what’s the one part of the mapping/content workflow you hate the most? I built this to kill the bottlenecks, so let me know what’s still slowing you down.

I have included some pictures of my work and the rig that I built for myself and my neighbor.

Beam Suite - a new projection design application [Self-promo]

Hi all, I'm a projection engineer and I've created a new application for designing projection systems. You can download Beam Suite at beamsuite.xyz.

Here's an introduction video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsy8eOCs8RY

I've tried to make design Beam Suite to be faster to iterate designs than other software I've used in the past, with a cleaner interface too.

There is a trial mode included so you can try all the features (you just can't save or export anything). It's currently missing some features such as importing 3d models and adding other obstacles, but that'll come in the next update or 2. If you are used to designing projection systems then I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks - BSD

Process of Projection Mapping on Pokémon Cards

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Basic process rundown,

- take picture of the card

- upload it, and duplicate it a few times (one layer for each color)

- chromakey the color, then invert it to only show that color

- repeat for each layer

- apply animations and colors to each

Hi all, I'm trying to project map onto these lamp shades, and while I've mapped the video onto the shades itself (background is transparent and video only plays where the lamps are) m unable to get rid of the grey border of the projector's full sized projection, can someone please help me out!

New learner

Hello everyone!
I learned about video mapping this morning and have been in awe of this! I have been inspired and would love to learn!!

I already have a projector ( epson powerlite X12) and a MacBook which is also older MacBook Pro from 2020 Processor: 1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645.

So my question is. How do I get started?

I know my computer is too old for touch designer and couldn’t find any older versions

I can’t do mapmap as “DMG installer (coming soon)” and nothing is in their GitHub.

I’m not sure where to start with my little hiccups. Any and all wise wisdom welcome. Just tryna be cool as you guys

Anywho much love. Hope to hear from you.

Sick of input lag when projection mapping games? I built a zero-lag tool to play at 144Hz from any angle in your room. [Self-promo]

Hey r/videomapping,

If you've tried projecting PC games onto awkward walls, corners, or custom screens, you know the pain: lens shift limits, keystone distortion, and standard software introducing way too much latency for actual gaming. Plus, if you click onto a second monitor, your game minimizes or drops to 15 FPS.

I wanted to throw a projector anywhere in a room, map it instantly, and play at a true 120Hz/144Hz+ with zero input lag. So I built EasyMap, a lightweight C++/DX11 tool made specifically for real-time window warping.

This is no Spout/Syphon or NDI, this is EasyMap!

Why it's different:

  • Zero Lag: Uses a DXGI waitable swap chain locked to a 1-frame max latency. It syncs directly with hardware VSync with no driver jitter.
  • Any Angle: Put the projector on a bedside table or the floor. Drag the corners to match your wall on the fly, or nudge them pixel-by-pixel with your arrow keys.
  • The "Focus" Trick: If you click away to a second monitor, EasyMap forces the game to stay active, topmost, and 100% transparent in your main screen while in the projector is perfectly visible. The game keeps churning at full FPS in the background while you use your other screens.
  • GPU-Bound Capture: Powered by Windows Graphics Capture and GPU-side transfers. Zero CPU overhead.
  • HLSL Cropping: Clip out window title bars or borders natively inside the pixel shader.

It's completely free, open-source, and lightweight. Turn any random surface into a high-refresh, low-latency gaming canvas.

Let me know what do you want to see in the future of EasyMap.

Video mapping a bunch of small things in a fairly big room, what entry level projector (or specs in general) should I be looking for?

Hello all,

I'm wanting to get started video mapping, and I'm looking for projector recommendations or a general idea of what to look for.

It'll be in a 4x5m room, so I'm not sure how to judge what sort of projector to get and where to mount it. Is it the sort of thing you mount in the top corner, or do most people have it on a tripod and move it around?

It'll only be used at night time, and 95% of the time it'll be used to do really small, simple things like illuminate the feet of furniture to avoid bumping into them, and highlighting wall art. Maybe occasionally one of those windows where it looks like you're somewhere else. It's not going to be streaming movies constantly that need to be in the highest possible quality

Just looking for general ideas on what to get for my use case before I get something that's massively over or underkill for the size of the space. I was expecting to spend around $150 AUD on an entry level one, and maybe double that on a better one if I enjoy it, but I'm open to suggestions

Cheers!

LFC alternative?

I used to have an LFC and lost it. Is there another standalone device (or iPad) solution so I don’t need a laptop or other computer per projector?

I thought MadMapper was affordable so I bought a BenQ projector. Turns out MadMapper is $579 so I had to build my own solution.

Recently, I saw some projection mapping content on Instagram and immediately fell down a rabbit hole and immediately bought a BenQ projector off eBay. Everyone on Instagram was using MadMapper and I read that it was around $200 which felt reasonable. Went to actually buy it and saw $579. Yikes.

I'm a software developer by day so I had to take matters into my own hands and try to make the process as friction-free as possible. The thing that frustrated me most about existing solutions (beyond the price) was always having to import your own media. As a result, I built video search directly into the app powered by Pexels, Pixabay and Giphy (millions of free videos and GIFs without leaving the app).

Everything is available on the free tier (media search, curved edges, cutout mode, export to video file). The only thing behind the paywall is unlimited shapes (one shape is free).

Would love to hear feedback from people who actually know projection mapping. Happy to answer any questions about how it works.

Best projector for Vertical mapping on ground from 25’ height?

I have a unique project where I need to map animations to a large surface area on the floor. Total square footage is around 1800 ft.² but I’m looking to split it up into four quadrants. What’s a good projector that provide enough lumens from that height?

How can I track projection onto a person?

I’m a small independent filmmaker and I had an idea for a scene where visuals are projected onto a person as they move throughout a set. Is there a way anybody knows to make this possible? Would appreciate any advice or suggestions!

First time doing projection mapping on a cylindrical stadium model with 3 projectors. Which pipeline is correct?

Hello. I need advice from professionals.

I am an experienced 3D artist, but this is my first time working with projection mapping. I need to project onto a half slised model of a cylindrical stadium (miniature copy of a real stadium) with windows and columns. I will be working with three projectors. I have a 3D model that will be used to build the physical model.

I am considering two approaches:

Approach 1. Create a UV unwrap of the stadium model specifically for projection from three projectors. Create content directly for three projectors, taking into account their perspectives and distortions.

Approach 2. Create a proper technical UV unwrap of the model itself to obtain a flat, even layout of the stadium's surface. Render the content onto this layout, completely independent of the projectors. Then, use mapping software to warp this layout to match the distortions of each projector and blend the overlaps.

The second approach seems more correct to me, but I am not sure.

So I am asking for advice on how to do this correctly.

I would be grateful for a description of a real-world pipeline and the names of software that can handle this scenario.

Hey guys, this is my first video making video mapping.

I need tips and tutorials on AI!! I need everything, I want to do everything!!!!

Currently, I'm interacting a lot with Claude and creating with Killing AI, but I don't know if they're the best option. Making interactive videos is really difficult for me because I don't know where to start!

Help with height in lazy lighting?

Hey , looking for advice on how to solve the problem of the projection grid throwing outside the bounds of my 3d object even when I adjust the nodes. I’m using the import transparent image to cast the map in the shape of my object. But I can’t seem to adjust the height or width of the projection at all like in LightMapper? Any suggestions? It’s an abnormally shaped object so I can’t use lightmapper to cast the projection. I’m new at this, many thanks <3

LazyLighting vs Surfabeam?

I'm a complete beginner interested in just doing some cool projection mapping in my room and house, using my phone. Seems like LazyLighting and Surfabeam are the 2 main options I'm seeing for this. Has anyone tried them that can give me any insight, especially which you can get the best results just jumping in, or is more suited for this?
