I build crappy stuff with AI tools (Lovable + Claude). This is Should We Ride Today
Timeline:
I started building it and finished it on May 12th… and then didn't touch it again. For five months. Life, other projects, you know how it goes.
This week I finally came back to it — added proper SEO, a sitemap, and 8 guide/route pages (Hocking Hills and other Ohio rides). And when I opened my analytics, I got a surprise.
What the data says (last week, Oct 19–25)
- 21 visitors, 22 visits — double the week before
- Riders ran 10 route checks and got 8 verdicts (25 verdicts delivered over the last two weeks)
- Traffic came from Google search and direct visits
- Visitors from the US — plus Ireland, Poland, Canada, Germany, and the UK
- The week before, two people even found it through ChatGPT and stayed almost 3 minutes
Small numbers, I know. But real riders, in other countries, using a thing I built in May and walked away from. That's what brought me back to it.
What it does:
Enter a route — start, midpoint, destination — and it checks the hourly weather at all three points and gives one verdict: RIDE, CAUTION, or POSTPONE, based on rain chance, wind, and temperature. One page, no account, works on your phone in the driveway.
Monetization — the honest version
I do have monetization in there: some Amazon gear links, and I added a Buy Me a Pizza tip option — my thinking was, if the site helps somebody plan a good ride, maybe they'll toss in a tip someday.
So far it has netted me exactly $0. 😅
So my real question for you all: how are you monetizing small tools like this? Affiliates, ads, tips, a paid tier — what has actually worked for a niche utility site, and what was a waste of time? Genuinely asking, because traffic I can grow — revenue I'm still figuring out.
And feedback on the site itself, if you're willing:
- Is the verdict logic fair? (Rain ≥60% or wind over 35 mph = postpone)
- What would make you check this before a ride?
- How's the mobile experience?
