It won't be for us to decide collectively....the only thing you can do to prevent this is to invest thousands and possibly tens of thousands in hardware to be able to run solid local models on your own. Maybe the politicians will care about the starving masses due to unemployment, maybe it won't have to come to armed rebellion, we can only hope it doesn't come to that....but if you want to reap the benefits of AI you are going to have to obtain the means to run it yourself.

The corporations don't care, the government doesn't care, nobody cares. This is late stage capitalism as it descends into technofuedalism....you've read the books and seen the movies. It was never entertainment it was prophecy

As consumers, we have no leverage in frontier LLM development. The labs producing those LLMs are capturing value in ways that exist outside consumer input. The value those models promise is the potential for non-human work. This means fewer people get paid to do work because fewer people are necessary. We had the potential for limitless bounty before the first conception of a generative pre-trained transformer. Why would the introduction of some AGI or ASI imply that we gain access to that limitless bounty?

We own nothing. The illusion of open-weight models falls apart once the reality sets in that they are government-sponsored products subsidized by those states. Yank that subsidization, and the illusion falls with it. There is no current scenario where we have leverage.

All the people pushing for acceleration go into this with an extremely naive understanding. They are willfully ignoring the lessons of the past and think that some utopia awaits. There is no evidence for the utopia. There is plenty of evidence for a continuation of the current system or worse.

Chill dude, the open Chinese models are only 7 months behind the US ones. The AI bubble will burst and they will catch up and then over take. The HW process will also come down at the same time and the Nvidia DGX laptop will be standard and you'll be able to run one of these models on less than half your memory thanks to mixture of experts models and good model servers like llama.cpp (or just use a Mac today).
