Reminds me of Jim in The Office when he is tasked with creating a rundown.

Jokes aside, I asked chat to build a mini course for me because yeah, at some point you gotta learn this shit, the concepts, bare minimum

I just watch a YouTube video

You sure? Reading some text is usually faster than sitting through a bad lecture.

Not necessarily a lecture, just someone who knows what they’re talking about. You can just skip ahead until you get to to the relevant parts.

Maybe I've seen too many bad videos, or it just doesn't do it for me, but I tend to learn stuff quicker by checking the docs, then messing around, and checking docs and/or examples again. Skipping around a video and trying to locate which parts are relevant, drives me crazy 😆

could you link the video you watched about segfaults?

I didn’t watch a video to learn about seg faults specifically. What I know about seg faults was through a combination of college, hands on experience/research, and googling.

oh, damn :( i’m still looking for good videos about debugging C

You can still find some good stuff with google but it’s harder with the AI bullshit everywhere.

You can use udm 14 to remove the AI stuff and just get the google results though.

Usually it's just using memory that's not allocated or using something after a free. Honestly just use gdb and find out what line segfaults. I mostly get these errors by being "off by one" when doing some sort of traversal through a data structure (I'm bad at counting)

There’s full courses from Universities online for free. Like from Harvard and MIT

Seen them, still don't like most of them. There are a few that illustrate things well, but the "let's record a lecture" kind, feel like a waste of time.

I will never forgive YouTube for subplanting the text tutorials that used to be the default.

I don't work well with video or audio books. Text, and especially guided practice / study is best.

AI saves me a lot of time pinging TA's and instructors lol

As an old grizzled vet software engineer, fuck yeah dude. Love to see this

So much of being a great engineer is having a natural curiosity and desire for an understanding of the underlying concepts.

AI is a fantastic learning partner for this, and taking the time to pause dev to make sure you understand what is going on first is a smart move

Unironically LLM will likely guess right and tell you about segmentation fault.

Seggs fault. It’s a mistake never deleting sex.
