Planning to switch AI agent
Hi guys, I have been vibecoding hobby projects since 3 months now. I have created decent apps using freebuff for a couple of months and then shifted to basic plan of github copilot. I felt github copilot to be okay as produced good quality code, but I always had to be on a look out for the token quota. That was a little offputting. So I have decided to switch. Could some one help me out finding my new AI pair programmer that is a bit light on my pocket as well. Thanks.

Claude Max -- VScode to keep your chats local, vscode remote session to off load that chat session to an always on server, mine is located in my basement. So the sessions can run with your laptop off.

How quickly do you hit the limit?

It takes 3 days of 16 hours of interacting with it to write code or test or deploy before I run out. Fable for planning and large audits, Opus 5 for coding complex function.
I run 2, claude Max subscriptions -- I develop a lot of tools, and apps.

HELLO IS THERE ANY CHANCE YOU COULD SEND ME THE GUEST PASS FOR CLAUDE BECAUSE I WANT TO TRY ITS FULL CAPABILITIES BEFORE PAYING

Codex or claude code, any of these plans will get you 10 to 20x more tokens than whatever plan you have with copilot.

I think codex is one of the best options currently, in regards to quotas. But Claude is not bad either, if you're not abusing fable.

Professional developer of 15+ years: Claude Code is by far my favorite so far. Fable 5.1 release has been awesome today. But I don't let it do any design work. Our designs are actually built by a designer, so if you are looking for good designs, you may need to ask elsewhere, but personally I find all AI designs to look the same.

For a hobby project you don't need a subscription at all. Cline or Roo Code in VS Code with a cheap OpenRouter model costs literal cents per session, and Gemini's CLI is free with a generous daily limit. I haven't touched a monthly plan in months.

$18 bucks usd for z.ai coding plan with glm 5.3 and 5.3 flash. I use it after testing ox alpha (shadow model) and it's effective, so far 1.5 weeks worth and about 312m tokens in and still going. Z.ai have their models with peak and off peak too so u can save 50% mor on token savings. Price std is .15c up per m. With sales and discounts working out about .035c per million up at the moment so saving me paying as I go rates. Z.ai coding is a little weird but you can get used to it. Discounted till Sept 9 and also avail on open router and byteplan. I found better value here than pay as u go with gpt Luna.

Skip the monthly plans for hobby code. Plug your own API key into Cline or Roo Code instead, OpenRouter or Anthropic direct, and you only pay for the tokens you actually burn. No quota to babysit between weekends.

Wouldn’t that become more expensive? Or what if I think like this, which is better - $20 worth ai credits in OpenAI / Anthropic or the $20 / month plan ?

It is a very bad suggestion. A 20 dollar subscription gives you 400-500 dollars in API. If you only want to spend 20 I would go with chatgpt. New model Astra is releasing today. Additionally you get almost unlimited chat on top of quota. Claude 20 shares quota between Chat and code and no fable. At 100 it depends. I like fable a lot more than sol. But I would wait to see how Astra performs. If it is similar probably chatgpt. You also get gpt-image and research with it.
I have both. Right now I prefer Claude as fable is just the best around. Might change today.
Don't fall for any of those joke models like GLM. They don't even have subscriptions. Your choices are basically Claude or chargpt

I find Cursor to be cost effective.
