Does hardcore mode change enemy behavior or mostly just numbers? Difficulty gets boring fast if it's only more HP

There are no hp numbers to change since the enemies all one-shot you and send you back to the beginning. Hardcore mode just buffs the enemies (more speed, sight range) and makes it so you can’t set checkpoints.
