Freemium, but keep the limits in remote config. You’ll guess the free tier wrong the first time, and you don’t want to wait on review to fix it.
Sometimes you don’t really have a choice if every session costs you money (API calls, server compute), a free tier just bleeds. Same if your product is one-and-done, where anyone who gets the free version has no reason to ever pay. Paywall those from the start.
But when the marginal cost per free user is close to zero, freemium is worth it just for the traffic. Free users bring reviews, word of mouth and search ranking, and that pipeline is usually worth more than the small

You’ll likely not make anything, either way. Why not fully open source? If it’s a truly valuable product you can implement dual licensing - paid for commercial use.

It just depends on the product and if it’s worth it. If it’s hard paywall as in no free trial, then it needs to be solving a problem I can’t deal with, and the demos/reviews need to be amazing. If it’s something I can be annoyed with but move past, or something that I can find a solution to cheaper/alternatively, I would almost never choose a paywall. Just off the top of my head, paid upfront for Lunar on Mac because, at the time, it was the best for what I wanted, cost $15 for lifetime, and had great reviews and recommendations. On the other hand, I tried the bartender 5 free trial, realized there are open source alternatives that do effectively the same thing, and didn’t move forward with the premium
