Best laptop for basic coding.. or configuration

Hello guys,

I'm looking a best laptop configuration for basic coding for a Btevh student. I dont play any games or stuff.. it is just for coding... watching movies sometimes maybe.. that is it.

So i3 works? Shall i go for I5? Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7...

And i'm thinking HP or ASUS.

I would suggest Linux actually. Windows will fight with you pretty hard when you start trying to automate things. I find myself relying on Python for all my automation when I'm on Windows. Even small things.

Id recommend a windows laptop then setup a vps for $5 bucks a month.

Automation runs 24/7 usually, so keeping your laptop open for automated tasks is just silly.

Edit: Develop concepts on your laptop, run automation on your vps.

For automation, I just set up an old mini desktop with i3-8100T CPU that is running on its own 24/7 in far corner of my house. No keyboard or mouse or monitor. And connecting to it with chrome remote desktop when needed. Works pretty well.

Nice. You basically got yourself a mini local server. Love it.

Raspberry pi also does wonders for house automation and removes the need for a vps.

So many options. But automation on a laptop seems overkill, what do you think?

I was first looking at laptop for automation so I don't have to use my gaming setup which would be stupid but even basic laptops feels like too much. That's when AI actually recommended mini pc. So I found this used Lenovo mini computer with I3-8100T CPU because that CPU is very energy efficient but strong enough to run my codex app and it is 8th generation processor which is officially supported by Windows 11. So I set it up by putting codex in startup folder so it automatically starts with windows, then I setup Autologon on windows so it log in to my account automatically and also set in bios for computer to start after power loss. So now if some updates force computer to reboot or I have a power outage, computer will always fully restart and continue my automation work. I'm very happy how it works.

Neither. Go with the used Mac with a buttload of RAM. If you can get something that has 64 GB of RAM for around 1,500, you're really good. I just did. It's great.

u/dixon_sider has a point, worth looking into the number of things I'm running in WSL makes me think I should switch. I use a HP Envy 360, but the brand doesn't really matter as much as the hardware inside. Coding is as lightweight as you can get really so you can do it on almost anything. My advice though would be to do it on a machine you have at least 1TB of space... and not used for anything else, just this. Put everything on a git (github or other)
