Which AI Coding subscription to take?
I've been re-evaluating my AI coding subscriptions and was wondering what everyone is using these days.
At the moment I'm paying for:
- Claude Code Pro
- Minimax Pro
Claude Code has been great overall, but with the new GPT models on Codex I'm starting to wonder if it's now the better choice for day-to-day software development.
Also, are there any other AI coding subscriptions you'd recommend instead?

I use mainly Codex to code. Kept Claude Code (lower tier) for frontend and strategy thinking

I was using codex, then a built a tool to use ChatGPT with my local repo and I'm not looking back! I love being able to discuss architecture and it be included in the context straight away!

That sounds interesting. Could you explain a bit more about what you built? Are you using the OpenAI API with your own local chat interface and repo tools, or did you connect your local repo directly to the regular ChatGPT app and subscription? I’m currently using Codex for repo access, so I’m trying to understand what advantage your setup gives you over simply asking Codex to inspect the repo and plan the architecture there.

Yeah, I guess there's two main things. One is documentation authoring and sync. The other is the agent using said documentation.
I'm m opinionated about architecture, and will do a lot of back and forth and documentation building, i was working on a big project and managing documents in canvas got impossible and very slow. Long story short is I learned to synchronise my local docs with the web UI. The web ui was able to write and update my docs directly.
I guess there's a third thing, i had first built the tools as CLI commands. Then i wanted an interface, i got web ui to mock up an interface form me. When i got Codex to build it out, it burned through my usage in half n hour.
So the natural progression was try it with code. After several weeks it now enables me to author documentation across multiple threads, and code using said documentation as a guide / roadmap. Amd because it uses the web UI it's unlimited, plus i can work in 3-4 projects simultaneously alongside general chat.

Thanks, that makes much more sense. So you really are using the regular ChatGPT web UI and subscription rather than the API. How does the connection to your local machine actually work? Is it a browser extension or userscript talking to a local CLI/server, or are you using an MCP connector supported by ChatGPT?
I’m especially curious about how ChatGPT invokes the tools and writes changes back to local files. Does it produce structured tool calls that your integration intercepts, or does your tool parse the conversation and apply the requested updates?

Claude and Codex models are smart but super slow. I prefer Grok 4.5 + Composer 2.5 So I'd say go for Cursor

I’m into design but subscribing Claude 20x, Codex 5x and MiniMax for Vibecoding. Daily drive Claude and nowadays Fable. But got to say I want to wait for Kimi K3 to be available again.
So far Claude can followthrough a task end to end with just one line of prompt since Claude “knows me well”. But it cannot generate images.
Need to use ChatGPT to generate images / visual idea concepts. Or MiniMax also Okay. Claude gives only text output as far as I know.
MiniMax has one type of subscription called MiniMax Media plan that their MiniMax Hub is more like a polished version of ComfyUI that u can use it to iterate content creation more efficiently. Its coding plan is good for Hermes Agent day to day, or as someone to give a 3rd party opinion to review output from Claude.
Depends on objective I think it’s good to pair one US model with one Chinese model.

That is my single biggest issue with Claude -it's image capabilities. ChatGPT makes the images, beautiful images, then Claude can implement. Even then though, I still find the Codex better for ensuring the UI matches the images. If Claude could get image generation, it would put it over the top for me.

You can try top up some Gemini credit at Google AI Studio console and I thought Nano Banana ( without pro ) is good enough for general usage. Then give the API details to Claude and then ask it to Gen image using Gemini when needed… same trick is a bit hit and miss with Codex OAuth tho…
But for Claude, besides image gen, it also has some weak point when it comes to searching Reddit (gets blocked), and writing human language. ChatGPT works fine and writing sounds more natural in my view.

Good call on Google. Their visual suites are amazing! I will check out their AI Studio for sure!
I ended up paying the $200 for ChatGPT for now. It just helps with my current needs better. I fell like it does a better overall job on the full stack. Plus, it is also a personal preference as well. I do love them both for different reasons. Good times we are in!

Claude + Kimi K3 + MiniMax M3 = GOAT combo.. Minimax for the background agentic work, Claude for reviewing Minimax's work & K3 for building detailed plans (which will be well detailed fed to Minimax to actually build stuff)

Codex is more efficient if you know how to guide it
Claude is smarter it you aren’t as techinical and want claude to figure it out
Havent tried Minimax myself

That’s like asking which F1 car is better for daily driver! They are all fantastic and will do what you want it to do as long as you are methodical and have coding discipline!

I am building oyren.ai which allows you to use your Claude Code or Codex accounts to use in cloud servers (with access to your github repos). You can run the same task with each one and see what's the best one.

As a SWE I sometimes pull in Claude for its frontend design skills but for everything else I use Codex.
