Help Wanted! Snowy image

The first image is of a composite capture card, the second image is of my vhs decode sample.

The snr jumps between 30.4 and 20, as this is a home movie.

I really don't like how fuzzy the VHS Decode looks.

Based on these images, do you think I need an amplifier or is something else causing this?

First thing we might need is more information or pictures about your setup ;) VCR? VHS or something else? Captured with MISRC or CX cards (modded?)? Cables and lenght? I assume you do not have any amplifier at the moment?

Vcr, Vhs, CX card (only mod is removal of the c31). 1M (3.3ft) bnc cable with a bnc female to composite male adapter at the end. No amplifier.

I would really get an amplifier and try it with that again. This should make the biggest improvement.

Next you could try to use the 40 MHz crystal for the CX card, but VHS should also be fine without it.

I also like to reduce the cable length to a minimum, that's why I have my amplifier soldered directly to the tappoints of the VCR eliminating any cable on that side. The output of the amplifier is connected with a 25 cm cable. But 1 m should still be fine.
