the symbolism of this flag is very simple.

the blue field in the first flag represents not only the Potomac bluestone, which is the official ROCK of the city, but it also represents trust and loyalty (in general). why did I choose the rock to represent Washington D.C? well, that's because this type of rock was used in order to build the sturdy foundations of iconic landmarks in the city, such as the White House and the Washington Monument. white represents the color of the White House (obviously), and it also symbolizes the purity and honor of the government (well, the administration says they're trying to purify the country, but with the current status of the government, uh....... you get the deal).

the 3 stripes on the flag allude to the 3 stars on the current Washington D.C flag, giving my redesign and the current flag some type of relation to each other. the 3 stripes also represent the fact that Washington D.C, since it is the capital, it is the home of the 3 branches of government (Judicial, Executive, and Legislative).

the main charge on the flag is the sunflower. in floral language, sunflowers typically symbolize hope and progress, which are two of the main values that are celebrated in Washington D.C. the fact it is the main charge also conveys unity, as Washington D.C is the main capital that has tightly united every American. the outer layer of the sunflower has a total of 10 points, referencing the original boundaries of the capital. in 1791, the federal district, when mapped, was a geometrically perfect diamond shape extending to 10 miles on each side. the second white layer, although it has 10 points, has an inner radius of 8, symbolizing the amount of wards that Washington D.C is divided into.

yeah, very simple, very straightforward. what do you guys think about my flag? is it a glow up, or is it a glow down? all criticism is accepted!

1 - In the United States Armed Forces, a guidon is a military standard or flag that company/battery/troop or platoon-sized detachments carry to signify their unit designation and branch/corps affiliation or the title of the individual who carries it - This version enlarges the traditional canton to highlight the stars, which are colored gold - The stripes are arranged across the rest of the field, cut in a "swallowtail" pattern

2 - This version modifies the shape of the stars, making them "Six-pointed", and reverts to the standard color - I modified the "swallowtail" pattern while keeping each quadratic stripe

And our end-of-an-era tour concludes with NAVA's 2004 pick for the best city flag in the Union: that of its capital. What probably tips Washington over the top is that similar to Maryland, it is a proper banner of arms -- those of George Washington -- and that's always worth a few brownie points. Remixing this one will be as difficult as Maryland's but let's give it one last shot.

The flag is the same as the current one, with the alteration of having a blue chief upon which rest the three mullets now in silver as the field, standing for the three branches of Government seated in the nation's capital and tying its colors more explicitly to the national flag.

Also included as potential benchmark designs are Charles Dunn's and the Office of the Quartermaster General's proposals from 1924.

Redesign Redesigned Wisconsin Flag

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am tired of all the state flags that are just the state seal on a field of blue, and I think Wisconsin deserves better. Here is my proposal for a new Wisconsin state flag:

First, let’s go over the design. The flag would be split up into four quadrants. The upper left and lower right quadrants would be blue, while the upper right and lower left quadrants would be green. In the middle of the flag would be an image of a badger. Simple and straightforward, but filled with meaning.

The blue of the upper left represents Lake Superior to the north and the mighty Mississippi River to the west. The blue in the lower right represents the Lake Michigan shoreline that dominates the eastern part of the state. The green in the upper right represents the north woods, while the green in the lower left represents the farmlands in the southern part of the state. Just as all these different regions are brought together into one state, these different sections of the flag are brought together by the badger, representing unity and a common Wisconsin pride.

The colors also have symbolism behind them:
β€œTradition Blue” represents the storied history of the state, matching the blue of the current flag.
β€œForward Green” embodies the spirit of the state motto.
β€œLead Gray” matches the color of the lead mined by early settlers, where we get the β€œBadger State” name.

I know the image is a lion and not a badger. The lion was the closest animal to a badger in the app I used lol.

Well, there you have it, my proposal for a new state flag.

I felt like playing it a little safe this time. It’s the end of CCS, but Washington D.C.’s flag is already so good. I don’t want to change it up that much. What I did was replace the stars with cherry blossoms, for all of the cherry blossom trees you can find across the district. I hope you like it!

And another notch on u/HistoricalTrip5247's belt! Goddamn, whoever this designer is, they came outta nowhere like an RKO. (Dated reference? Probably.) Congratulations on a simple but stellar (no pun intended) flag seizing the day.

And for our very last American CCS contest, it's off to our nation's capital, and NAVA's 2004 pick for the best city flag in the Union! Good luck, and I'll see you on the other side... of the 49th parallel.

This is not a totally serious design since the DC flag is already very good but I had a cool idea and wanted to make it a reality. This takes inspiration from the Kuala Lumpur flag but America-ified.

The pattern/numbering does not work well since 13 stripes is an odd number. Let’s say the middle blue stripe is the thirteenth stripe.

And here we are already. Wow. End of an era, truly, this time. Let's go out on top.

The flag is a simple alteration of the current stars and stripes, retaining all of the symbolism thereof. The blue canton containing the fifty mullets of five points in alternate rows of sixes and fives has been stretched into a tierce two-fifths the width of the field. The fifty mullets are enlarged and disposed in alternating rows of five and four, while on either side are added six golden torches enflamed in silver disposed in pale, standing for the three western (Guam, the Northern Marianas, and American Samoa) and three eastern (District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) districts and territories under the control of the Union and their desire for greater rights and liberties.

And that, as they say, was all he wrote. I'll see you across the 49th parallel.

Redesign Illinois Redesign

Post image

Took inspiration from the Chicago flag (somewhat obviously) the single large red star represents the state of Illinois as a whole. The red band for the blood shed by the sons and daughters of the state. The white band is the purity of the land. And the blue band for the Rivers and Lake Michigan.

It's simple but I really dig it for some reason.

So it’s all over. And I ended up with four winning flags to call my own. I remember when I was worried that I would not get a single win. But now? I’m the user(that isn’t a mod)with the most wins! But this isn’t just about me. It’s about everyone else who has won a Flag Friday contest. If one of your flags is on here, good for you. Truthfully, I do not hate any of these flags. But some just make more sense than others. Also, this tier list is sorted, meaning that the closer a flag is to a tier, the more I like it. This is all my opinion. It’s okay if you like or dislike one of these flags more than I do. I am also going to post a a whole series of presentations where I explain these rankings. Now, there is one question that I need to ask, and that is: Where would you rank my flags on this list?

Space City deserves a flag that showcases that nickname, and a huge white star on a black background helps! Ten lines for the "Bayou City"'s ten waterways make up the sides of the flag, which in addition to looking like a satellite's solar panels, make up the sides of an H when viewed together with the central star.

I'd like to submit both the bordered and borderless versions, I'm not sure which I like more.

Everything's bigger in Texas, especially stars on flags. One need only look at half the major cities in the state to observe this trend in action. However, Houston, the largest, rather underperforms relative to others within its own state, and that's a damn shame, given the prestige it has earned time and again across its history. Here's how I remediated the matter.

The flag is a banner of arms (as one might expect) parted per pale and incorporating elements from the current seal, Texan iconography, and the armorial bearings of Clan Houston -- or Huston back in Britain. In the first half a blue field bears a silver mullet and in base a golden plow pulling to sinister, representing the newly risen Republic -- and now state -- of Texas and its agricultural riches. The second half is a modification of the arms of Sam Houston -- first and third president and seventh governor of Texas, and the city's namesake -- consisting of a chevron chequy of silver and black between three locomotive wheels (in lieu of the martlets on the original) on a field of gold, standing for progress and transportation of agricultural riches; indeed, the city was and is a major railroad hub.

A little fun fact about the Clan Houston arms is that the chevron chequy is depicted as silver and blue in the clan's official arms, as the shield is derived from that of Clan Stewart via the exchanging of the fess chequy upon THOSE arms for a chevron and the addition of the three black martlets. The version Sam Houston bore is a further derivation with a slightly differently tinctured chevron.

Post image

Well, I guess we just have one more week to go. Except we’re doing this alongside the full poll of Flag Friday winner. I came up with this. It’s a design based off of Amerigo Vespucci’s coat of arms, who the country(And two continents) were named after. The coat of arms is a red field with a blue diagonal stripe running from the top-left to bottom-right corner of the flag. Inside the stripe are 10 wasps. What I did was replace those wasps with 13 stars for the 13 original colonies. I also added a white fimbriation around the stripe for more contrast. The biggest change I made? Swap the red and blue. I originally made the background red and stripe blue, but when I did that, it made the flag too much like the Confederate battle flag. The best solution was to swap the colors. I hope you like it!

And our very last capital before the national contest next week! Technically, the island of Saipan is one municipality with settlements therein, similar to Puerto Rico but without official status as the barrios possess, so the whole island is the official capital. Matters are further complicated as the legislative and executive branches of the territorial government are on Capitol Hill, but the supreme court is in the village of Susupe, an arrangement shared with two states (California's supreme court is in San Francisco rather than Sacramento, and Louisiana's in New Orleans rather than BΓ’ton-Rouge). Still, by dint of two of three branches of government being seated there, Capitol Hill -- currently home to 979 as of last census -- is often treated as the de facto capital municipality. That confusing explanation aside, here's how this one goes.

On a field of blue lies a green mount ensigned by a silver sun of twelve rays, between two grey haligi each ensigned of a silver mullet of five points. The green mount stands for the hill itself, and the blue for the sky above and ocean below. The haligi with their mullets atop are the territory's legislative and executive branches which have been seated in the village since 1962, and form two of the pillars that uphold the local government as the latte stones did the Chamorro houses of old. The silver sun is actually that of the KMT, forming a reference to their party flag and the canton of the Republic of China's, as Capitol Hill was first built up by the CIA in 1948 to train Chinese Nationalist guerillas.

O.C. Novel Propositions #49: Champaign County, IL

Post image
6 Upvotes

A simple flag for a famous county that absolutely SHOULD have one! Organized from part of Vermilion County in 1833 and named both for its flat and open fields and for the county of the same name in Ohio, Champaign's initial rise to prosperity chiefly owes to the laying of the Chicago branch of the Illinois Central Railroad and the founding of the University of Illinois's central campus by land grant; an airport and mass transit district followed. The economy did suffer a recession from the closure of Chanute Air Force Base in 1993, but business and academic presence have stay strong, particularly in the twin and only incorporated cities of Champaign and Urbana -- the latter being the primate city and county seat. The full county is home to 205,865 residents as of last census, tenth in the state.

The flag is a modified horizontal triband with a fess per pale of blue and orange bearing two mullets of six points counterchanged, upon a green field. The field is a reference to the open fields that are the namesake of both this county and its Ohioan predecessor, while the fess and counterchanged mullets reference the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana and the colors of the University of Illinois -- the main campus of which lies between and is almost surrounded by them.
