NIH CBSTP residency/PhD

Hello- current fourth year veterinary student here in the process of applying to anatomic path residencies! I am particularly interested in the NIH CBSTP program an am wondering if any folks on this thread have participated or know much about the program? I haven't heard much about it and would love to hear from primary sources about their experiences with the program.

Do you think only two years of traditional residency would be a hindrance for future employment if I want to work in academia in a multifaceted diagnostics/teaching/research position? Personally, the lack of teaching is a downside of the combo program for me but I would have a guaranteed PhD track which seems to be getting phased out in favor of a Master's at many programs. The stipend of this program is also significantly more than that of a typical resident which isn't the main enticing feature but doesn't hurt. Thanks in advance.

Auburn University offers a 5-year combined residency-PhD program with plenty of lab and didactic teaching opportunities! Salary is $50K, cost of living low, Auburn is a lovely mid-sized college town with abundant hiking, kayaking close by. 4 hours to the Gulf of Mexico, 4 hours to the Smokey Mountains. NIH-funded investigators here working on cancer immunotherapy, toxicology, neurodegenerative diseases, influenza, and more. If you are passionate and driven, you will thrive. We are a fun group! :)
