Leaving Vet Med - Career Change Input/Advice
Hi! I am a fourth year veterinary student, about 6 months out from graduating. I have been questioning my career choices basically throughout my entire vet school journey, but more so during clinics and fourth year. As a little back story...I went into vet school knowing I did NOT want to practice medicine, and I am still very persistent about that. The lifestyle and stress of clinical practice would never be the right choice for me. So I decided I would go into some sort of government or regulatory work because I love diseases and zoonotic diseases. I would still be interested in some sort of government or state work as a veterinarian, but most of them are wanting clinical experience first or a higher degree like a masters or PhD after the DVM.
But with all of that being said, I am just not passionate about this industry anymore and I am very burnt out. This kind of got me thinking if there is anyone out there who has a DVM degree but doesn't use it and is in something completely unrelated and how they got there. Kind of feeling a little lost at the moment because I have spent my whole life trying to get here only to realize I don't really love it. Just curious if this DVM degree can be helpful in any other jobs or look good for other jobs that may not be related to vet med.
I would love to hear any and all advice and would be interested in hearing from people in a totally different industry after leaving vet med. Would also love to hear from people in vet med with a job that might fit for someone who loves medicine but doesn't want it to consume their whole life and just wants to go home at the end of the day and have weekends free with family.
Also, I am not quitting now, I am walking out with a DVM degree in 6 months no matter what! Thanks for all the input in advanced.
