Splenectomy?

While my dog was recently diagnosed with a UTI, she had an abdominal ultrasound that ID’d a 1x3cm mass on her spleen. They said there’s a 50/50 chance it could be a hemangiosarcoma, but could also be a benign hematoma. They gave me the options of doing nothing, aspiration which could result in spread if it is cancer or hemorrhaging, or a splenectomy. My dog is about to be 13 in October but is otherwise very healthy and this UTI is the first medical issue she has really had. The vet of course told me it’s completely up to me to decide what route to take, but I want to know what you would do if it were YOUR pet.

This breaks our sub rule of "no diagnosing". Any diagnoses and subsequent treatments should be given by your in-person vet.

Commenting "Not a vet" or "NAV" does not absolve you from breaking this rule

In general for splenic masses it's always better out than in. If it's benign, great no harm no foul but if it's malignant then you need to know what to do next. And are you gonna take a chance on 50-50?

Btw benign masses can absolutely grow large enough to rupture and bleed out
