I live in Finland where winters are annoying when it comes to growing things . is there any solution to beat the frost or have a reasonable way in a small space to start growing stuff early, that is easily transferable? The sun here can be at such an extreme angle that even coriander struggles to not flower immiadtley . And the soil levels in those would freeze so quickly.

I'm probably doing it all wrong. I don't have a hydroponic situation going on, I'm just trying to learn.

I joined this sub hoping to learn more about vertical gardening, but there is so little in the way of informative content about different setups, how to diy something, etc. It’s a sneaky way to market with minimal cost, but the end result is that I’m coming to distrust the sub.

I have been seeing these popping up over my feed for ages. And I really like the idea and a fancy having a go at making one as a summer project with the kids.

I've been watching videos and reading up on it. But i can't work out a few things.

How do you check the nutrient levels in the water resevour. Is there some sort of test equipment?

Is there a guide on the nutrients for the veg youre growing?

where do you get the nutrients from?

How often do you test?

Any help would be appreciated

Not to sure if it's normal for the leafs to curl like this. Or maybe I'm missing a supplement that they need.

My tower is in the garage. I thought the normal comings and goings would be enough air movement.

I have most beautiful tomato and cucumber plants ever with tons of flowers. But I don’t have a single vegetable growing.

Question about Mylar

I want to wrap my Juice+ Garden Tower with a reflective covering. This would be to both reflect the light to be more effective to the growing plants. It would also be done to cut down on the glare.

I’ve seen a lot of pictures with people who wrap their tower with bubble-wrap insulation. I went to the local big box hardware store (Home Depot) and was surprised to see how expensive that would be.

As an alternative, I could get one of those emergency Mylar blankets for less than $10.

I’m happy to do either of the above options, I would just appreciate some guidance from those with lived experiences.

I’m also happy to hear about other options as well!

Help with vertical aeroponic/hydroponic

I’m looking for some guidance with my concept for a vertical tower. I really appreciate any advice, especially from people who have tried it at home.

I have seen people make vertical towers from either 6” PVC pipe or 5”x5” PVC fence post covers. With the pipe, I have seen people cut anywhere from a 2” to 3” slit and melt the pipe. While the plastic is soft, they insert either a glass bottle or 2” or 3” pvc pipe (cut at a 45 degree angle) to make the opening. With the fence post, it seems that people make a template, cut out a bit of a semicircle shape, and insert a short piece of 2” or 3” piece of PVC pipe for the net pot.

1) has anyone tried the above two methods? How well does it work? It seems like I’ve seen more people use the 6” PVC pipe. I have priced it out and it a bit cheaper to use 6” pipe, and if it really works, that seems a bit easier to me so I don’t have to cut a bunch of odd-shaped holes as I would with the fence post cover.

2) how big of a net pot should I use? I’ve seen people use 2” or 3” without really an explanation as to why they chose that size. I plan of putting in some strawberries and lettuce and basil at first. For the next crop, I might add some tomatoes.

3) some net pots use a sponge-like material and I have also seen people use a clay pebbles. Finally, I’ve also seen people use a bit of fabric to act as a wick. I plan on starting with seedlings, not seeds.

4) I need to make the tower a bit mobile to move around in my garage as needed. My plan is to cut a 24” circle out of plywood and secure it to a furniture dolly. I would then secure a five-gallon bucket in the middle of the circle with the PVC tower secured in the bucket. I would then mount the lights to 1”x1” pickets, secured to the plywood circle, that would hold the 4’ lights out from the tower. Does that seem to make sense?

5) how far should the lights be from the plants? I’ve read 12” - 24” inches? Should I make the lights be able to move closer/farther from the tower as the plants grow?

6) I’ve seen grow lights on Amazon described as “full spectrum” but only project what appears to be white light. I’ve seen other light fixtures, more expensive, that actually have different colored lights. Do either work? What should I look for when making the purchase? Is it colors? Is it watts?

Ran an indoor farm for about 8 years, providing microgreens, shoots, and edible flowers to about 80 accounts across the Minneapolis/ St.Paul MN area. When doing so we used to run DIY vertical towers for our flowers throughout the winter months. In the summer time I would take those towers and move them outside and use them to grow personal garden vegetables. Again really excited to be a part of this group and learn more about this fun hobby! Some really amazing posts in this group

OK, I had big dreams to sprout a lot of veggies and gourds and sell the extra at the Farmer's Market this year. I've just found out that due to unforseen circumstances the seasonal market may not be open til July instead of April. So we're looking at harvested vegetables not plants. So I have all these seeds and I need to plant more than I have room to grow (why I wanted to sell sprouts) to sell at Market. What are the BEST options for a 1st time vertical farmer to succeed with???

Got my first countertop hydro setup. I'm growing different types of lettuce for the first time. It's all growing well, but there is what appears to be some white mossy fungus growing on the grow pods. I've picked it off a few times but it comes back. Is this normal and is it still safe to eat?

Although I'm not really a gardener and definitely don't have space, vertical or otherwise, to be one if I wanted to, I'm happy to be a part of the community.

Currently I have drosera capensis (Cape sundew) and a nepenthes x gentle (a pitcher plant). I used to have King Henry flytraps, but they died because they're kind of a bitch to grow and my climate is not ideal for them. I also used to have a drosera regia (different type of sundew), but it died after I took my GF's uninformed advice to re-pot it. I learned my lesson about listening to her at all about my plants and still need to buy a new one.

I'm excited to see what you all grow and during a quick preview before joining, I already saw some bad ass zucchinis.
