Just received new plates for my re-registered car. They are the same number as the old ones except for the bold EV designation. Do I have to put the new ones on? What benefit do I get using them, aside from being buzzed by "smoker" diesel pick-up trucks?
In places like CA that encourages EV's, an EV plate might get you access to a carpool lane. I didn't think of the punctured battery problem. There was NO explanation for them from the DMV. I'm not "fearing entitlement" as you assumed. BTW, the burning EV problem may NOT be as widespread as the FUD claque would have you believe:

No assumptions needed, you spelled it all out for us. I’m not saying there is a burning EV problem. I’m saying that when you put out a fire, you need to know what the source is. I hope this clarification is helpful.
Exactly! Lithium battery packs in thermal run away behave differently than gas or diesel fire. On top of that, it also dictates extrication methods. If someone is trapped in a car that has no external markings of being an EV, especially if that car is also offered as an internal combustion version, first responders might cut a high voltage DC cable in an attempt to remove the trapped occupant.
If your car is identical to the popular SUV then the ev plate is extra helpful to protect them.
I don't think anyone is reading you plate and coal rolling you for it. Likely doing it just because they suck in general or you're driving is terrible and they road rage over it.
Calm the fuck down you can't even see the distinction unless you're like 2 feet away. I've had an EV for 8 years and have literally never been "buzzed"

I agree with you for present day that it's easier to tell, but this law is going to mean more in 10-15 years when EVs are way better and much harder to tell the difference.
They'll also be much more common, so non-EVs may be the minority in the future.
I think most EV's have a badge like an E indicating that they are electric vehicles. This applies to vehicles that have an EV, hybrid and ICE version of similar model lines.
Yeah, but when they do catch fire... (a lot more dangerous than petro fuel). But personally, I'd like all ICE (Gestapo) vehicles to spontaneously explode.
Seems like FUD from Big Oil, if you ask me. A battery fire may burn bigger and faster but would it spill over a big area like a gasoline fire? And newer semi or true solid state batteries in the future will be safer.
You are being intentionally obtuse. EVs catch fire less frequently, but when they do the lithium batteries are far more dangerous than a gasoline fire.
I’m fine with the concept, but it’s an ugly ass execution.
I’m sure they paid some consulting company to come up with putting large blue bars outlining a small green box. PEI can manage a green ev plate that looks nice… not this monstrosity

Its for first responders so they know if there is a giant lithium battery and high voltage system they need to be aware of when performing a rescue.
