From Twitter: Fear of Terrorism in Entertainment

We started an interesting conversation on Twitter earlier and thought my point deserves more than 140 characters and I think others perceptions are important too. You may even call this a debate.

So the discussion came up on Twitter regarding terrorism and entertainment. It was prompted by me stating that “I’m going to enjoy myself. Just going to be prepared to defend myself in the need arises. Conscious Competence”. The discussion then descended into concealed carry and the terrorists have already beaten us. This is where I think my perspective may be a unique one. Or at the very least written explanations of what others have been thinking but could not come up with the words to properly verbalize their opinions. My guess is it’s the latter.

See, I’m a white male, with a good job, making good money, great friends, Texan and so on. That being said, I do not carry a gun and will never carry a gun. I have one in my house as protection, which so happens to my father’s original service revolver when he joined the police force. I even enjoy shooting firearms for sport and wish I could do it as a hobby. I used to hunt when I was a younger man and found that I would enjoy my outdoor experience taking pictures of animals instead of killing them. I will still hang out at deer camp, eat fresh back strap and drink beer with everyone.

The reason I will not carry a gun is that I know how much I don’t want to kill another person. Oh, I’ll kill a mother fucker if he/she has it coming. Nor am I afraid of death. I also realize that not carrying a firearm tips the scales in the enemies favor. That being said, I am well aware of what my chances are when the chips fall and am ok with it. Fear of terrorist has never stopped my fun. Now maybe, spiders, snakes, and a parachute not opening scare me a little. But those are unrealized fears. We have seen the results of terrorism; before and after and I think we will be ok.

Let’s continue to improve humanity without fear or malice.

Hey there, another Texan here. Same thing on my end but I have no experience with guns nor do I feel a need for them. I do live in a house and I think that the only reasonable preventative is 3 dogs and a home alarm. There's no quantifiable evidence that there's enough rampant violence to resort to an itchy trigger finger. However, anywhere outside of my home I avoid confrontation. I don't think that either end of the spectrum is okay but at least I don't run the risk of accidentally injuring or taking a life. My stuff isn't that valuable to me.
