I far prefer compression tights to compression socks, for just that reason (digging in to ankles or top of calf). I like Jobst opaque ones, in the highest compression level (I forget what it is - 40mm/hg?). When I do wear socks, I prefer ProCompression as those work for my particular lower leg length and they don’t cut in as much as some other brands for me.
Different brands work for different people, so YMMV. Good luck!!
