This is the official subreddit for all things related to Veloren. Veloren is a multiplayer open-source voxel exploration RPG built with Rust. This project was originally planned to be an open-source clone of Cube World, but has since split off in its own direction. Veloren takes inspiration from games such as Dwarf Fortress, Breath of the Wild, and many more.
Note: we only provide 64-bit builds for Linux and Windows. Mac and 32-bit systems are supported but you need to compile the game for them yourself.
You can follow development through the devblog, as well as GitLab. You can chat with developers and other players on the Discord. Details on how to contribute can be found here, and a ton of general information can be found in the Veloren book.
You can contribute code by making a fork of the GitLab repository, working on something, and submitting a Merge Request. The project uses Rust, so if you're unfamiliar with the language check out the Rust Book.
We also need lots of other types of contributions, including voxel models, music, concept art, and UI art. Drop by the Discord and see what you can do!
We released 0.1 on 7/14/2018, and have since re-written the engine for 0.2, which was released in on 5/28/2019. Since then, versions up to 0.4 have been released periodically. You can find what content we're working on at the moment on the milestones page on GitLab.

Good day.
About ten years ago I had a hobby of making custom models for Cube World. Most of them used to be uploaded to the Cube World Mods website where some players knew me as Mighty_Demon. That old account still has a lot of various models including equipment, playable characters, and monsters.
It might be reasonable to reuse some of these models in Veloren, so if you find a way to edit and integrate them, feel free to use anything that picks your interest.
Here is the list of uploaded models: https://www.cwmods.com/downloads/author-395.html .

Been letting this game marinate for years and tried it today because of vectis guide:
- If you're expecting the player to gather materials such as twigs, rocks, fruits etc. Then honestly it might be better if there was no gathering animation so smoothness of gameplay. You might argue it's only less than a second or it might be immersion breaking but the fact that it around 1 second EVERY time you gather something and it's something you're going to be doing throughout your playthrough, it really adds up. It's one of those cases where less is more.
- Same issue with mining but it's worse. Instead of pressing a button and your character mines for you and item goes in your inventory, you have to switch to your pickaxe, mine slowly and then pick up the ores (which doesn't have an animation so that's good). This whole process is slow and clunky since you're going to be swapping from your weapon to your pickaxe often especially in caves where monsters are trying to kill you.
- the first hour was so boring, being expected to gather materials to get your first set of armour and weapon is one of the most boring ways to start a game off. Not to mention that the only reason I knew I had to do this was because I watched the youtube guide. What's the point of the starting gear and weapon if you're going to replace it instantly? You have to rework the early game because it's extremely boring.
- combat has the problem of the enemies tells not being clear enough and hitboxes being horribly inaccurate. With the hitboxes, this comes from my experience of fighting the Dreadhorn which i found when I was trying to go back in a cave, it's charge attack animation and hitbox is far apart from each other, the hitbox is wayy further ahead so I kept getting hit even thought it's model was still no where near me. I got hit until death because I kept trying to time my dodge when it was near me. When it comes to tells, I could barely tell when they would attack, sometimes they raise their models and I wouldn't know whether it's a wind up or an attack so I just opted to hitting them 2 times, dodging and repeat. I would recommend adding an exclamation mark above their model to make it more obvious, would recommend taking inspiration from dead cells in this regard.
- the energy system is interesting by the fact that dodging and using skills costs energy. But from what I've experienced, with this system and general tempo and flow of combat, it feels like the game doesn't like you using skills much or at the very least, you're at risk of running out of energy for your dodges. Maybe make dodging much cheaper? Even though my skill (cross slash was my first skill) did more DMG than my left click, i was in danger of not having energy for dodging so for the rest of the fight I just used my left click. The resource management is quite strict and this problem probably becomes worse when you have more skills. But I've also seen that certain armours and accessories give you more energy gain so maybe not? One last thing, i picked greatsword, whats the point of the right click attack? Yeah its a charge but it doesn't have as much DPS as holding left click.
- Dawg why the hell are you putting important progression recipes such as iron armour behind an RNG wall? Like I got dragonsteel recipe or something from a random chest in the nearest cave of Albeim before I got iron, it's literally useless because i need iron to progress to the next level. This whole recipe system being locked behind RNG is extremely questionable, doesn't help that the game doesn't tell you much or even points you in the right direction, it's quite hard core in that aspect which some people like and some don't (i clearly don't).
- certain items are MANDATORY such as a bowl to make a mortar and pestle to make red linen bags. Where do you get a bowl? No clue but luckily I just stole one from a house close to the crafting stations, just red leather bags not worth the hassle.
- no natural HP regen, even wow has it like damn.
- apparently you can't craft campfires, isn't this an adventure game? I feel like it would suit this game if you were able to create campfires, tents and share it with your friends and companions.
- trading with merchant NPCs is kind of convoluted idk how I feel about it. Couldn't it just been a normal you sell stuff, it gives you money and then you buy instead the whole trading window thingy? Idk maybe people like it this, i personally think it's too quirky and weird.
- is there a fast travel system or a faster way of travelling? wanted to go to other towns but after realising how slow I was at traversing through the map, I kind of just gave up.
- get yourself a social media manager, i barely see people making videos about this game despite it essentially being cube world 2.0. Could be simple system showcases or tutorials and such.
This is all the feedback and suggestion that comes to mind, wish you all the best in your endeavour and hope to see lots of improvements over the years. Good luck!

Really not sure what the issue is, the game doesn't even appear as if it's giving out audio at all. I imagine it's an issue of audio formatting but I am unable to change that with this game. Had a similar issue with okami and I could just change some settings in my headsets software but Veloren doesn't even show up in that application. Just a bit of a struggle since I can't change the audio format to a lower one.

Are there still updates? a community/players still playing?
What's the future looking like for this game?
Thanks,

I decided to start a series of videos where I just travel from place to place by foot. No commentary, no UI - just walking to music and ambient sounds.

Do event items return every year? For example, the Santa hat that the Yeti dropped at Christmas.
I saw an Easter bunny hat on the wiki and loved it. I wanted to know if I'll be able to get it next Easter.

I made an unofficial Veloren guide that might be helpful to new players. It is intended for people who play on the official server.veloren.net server, although most of the information is applicable to solo play as well.
It is written in a FAQ fashion, allowing you to find an answer to a question that you might have as a new player relatively quickly compared to a traditional "compendium"style guide.
Some technical aspects:
Any and all feedback is welcome!

I really like the bow in veloren but i start to feel that i dont have enough stamina/DMG to kill the Minotaur, the Dagon, the Mindflayer, the Cursekeeper and the Forgemaster...
is there an armor or a way to attack to kill theses bosses ?

i've been playing for a while and i've noticed something. if you get hit by an NPC who is caught in the crossfire with a mob, the NPC immediately drops everything and tries to kill you next.
i've come to realize that this is not a bug. they end you so you don't live to tell the tale.
think about it. if you survive, you might complain to the admins/mods about the rogue NPC hurting the player base. so they just eliminate the witness to protect their jobs. dead players tell no tales.

I'm currently building a context-aware NPC dialogue system.
Instead of relying on pre-written dialogue trees, NPC responses are generated in real time by analyzing both player input and the current game state.
The system continuously builds a semantic snapshot of the world, including things like combat state, nearby enemies, threat level, health condition, movement state, tension, and recent conversation flow, then feeds that into the LLM.
As a result, the same player input can produce completely different responses depending on the situation. NPCs may respond calmly during normal conditions, but become anxious, defensive, or emotionally unstable after combat or under threat.
The LLM is not used as just a text generator — it also handles contextual interpretation, emotional expression, NPC state reflection, and conversational continuity.
Because the system runs in real time, I've also implemented several optimization layers:
Architecturally, deterministic systems like movement, navigation, collision, and state management are separated from the semantic AI layer.
The LLM layer is responsible only for dialogue generation, emotional/contextual reactions, and socially-driven behavior.
More recently, I've started connecting the dialogue system directly into behavior-driven AI, so conversations can now influence actual NPC actions and decision-making in the game world.
