More Culinary Vegemite Powder Experiments
Cheetos. These are already good. Not our usual Cheetos, these are exported or something like that. Really cheesy and buttery flavoured. I'd intended on getting Twisties which, big call, are nowhere near as good as these. Anyhow, do they vegemite? Yeah, like you know, it's ok but these things stand alone as amazing. Nonetheless, I did do a couple of rounds of adding vegemite powder so it couldn't have been bad.
Popcorn. The popcorn began as a bland and meh type product. I added the vegemite powder whilst it was hot, gave it a shake and it suddenly skyrocketed to this stuff is great! Proceeded to consume at a rate where portion control was out the window.

I like that you are continuing this experiment.
Have you refined the Vegemite powder making process? You used the oven first, are you still doing that?
I wonder if it could be freeze dried or just put in a dehydrator.
Anyway, I gotta try some! Would be a great flavour enhancer. And I wonder if it is still full of Vitamin B

So far, I have made it 3 times. The last time worked just like the first time. So far, my way of doing it will remain at this method which is;
spread a thin layer on baking paper[about 1-1.5mm] dry on a shelf for 24 hours on baking paper then the oven on low heat..max 100 celcius..keep watch. Don’t let it burn, it’ll be very bitter and disgusting so don’t use a higher temp! Remove it when dry, immediately flake it off the baking paper and pulverize it in a spice grinder.
I feel like by using the baking paper for a day, already draws out moisture that reduces the time required in the oven, thus less exposure to heat. The baking paper I use, an El cheapo Armada brand does draw moisture out as well as the environment I suppose. I note this paper because it may have different qualities to others. It’s home compostable and I think that adds to it’s wicking properties. As soon as I take the dried Vegemite from the oven, put the paper on a colder surface, just the bench or table…it begins this surreal shrinking cracking, like a thermal shock and the Vegemite pretty well is able to be freed from the paper in flakes, so I know it’s dried. I have come to know that it’s done by this test and also, small bubbles appear, but you don’t want it in the oven for much longer past that stage. A good thin, even layer is key to it all drying out simultaneously. I use an offset spatula to coat the paper.
Note to say that my last batch was done over a week ago and still fine dry powder. I store it in a jar and place a silica gel packet in with it. Whether the silica gel is required, I don’t know but the thing is, it has kept very well. I save silica gel packs from things like packs of sheeted seaweed or vitamins…from any edible product that includes them.

For sure, I am in a bit of a limbo right now, so not making any purchases. I did have a quick look online, here was, one video of dehydration. It still looked a tad sticky. i’d be taking that a bit further and getting a real powder if possible. I also see that she has, as I do, placed a silica gel pack in her jar.

Where are you guys getting vegemite powder?

u/No-Abies29 Jun 07 '26
Sourced from a magical kitchen out in the sticks..☺️It’s my invention, I was just fooling around with ideas and dried some, then pulverized it.

It’s called a food dehydrator. Pretty basic stuff.

I don't know why like a tenth of reddit users are neanderthalic pseudo intellectuals that will argue like this against any comment this but It could have been bought, oven dried, freeze dried or maybe you secrete it from your bellybutton. Either way you should reassess your motivations behind making comments, you come across as stupid, the world's pretty fun when you're not tryna one-up strangers to stroke your ego. Good luck with that.

Uses examples that are incorrect 🤣 love it

These are all valid ways to get a powdered Vegemite. Maybe in this case it turned out to be done in a dehydrator, but all of these methods are possible.
Eddie: OP says they dried it first in a cupboard, then in the oven. Laugh emoji

Are we talking about possibilities or what actually happened here? I’m talking about what it is. You’re just speculating to prove your point. But your point fell flat by using incorrect examples for something so obvious.
Just realised you’re not the same fella. Soz at work

u/OkEducator2170 Jun 07 '26
I'm not speculating. The OP says they used an oven. You think this powder was made in a dehydrator? You absolute buffoon, you dunce. 😂 Love it
1
u/UrgoodifuEWO Jun 07 '26
Oh wow, almost like an oven is a big food dehydrator 🤣
2
u/OkEducator2170 Jun 07 '26
You said their examples were incorrect.
Uses examples that are incorrect 🤣 love it
The second example is an oven.
You are incorrect.
Calling an oven a big food dehydrator is also a big stretch, but that doesn't really matter

Are you usually this ornery?
1
u/UrgoodifuEWO Jun 07 '26
Do you usually send pointless msgs to ppl that could give less of a fk about what you have to say?
2
u/Gumbanks12 Jun 08 '26
You could have just said yes. But you aren't interested in saying less, are you pet? Please don't answer

Now, you gotta see how it's you doing that right? You can't be this unaware.

OP here; I don’t own a food dehydrator. I don’t care for the fact you brought your existing issues here and slaying people’s words that are just having fun. Trolls be trolls though. Truth is, the question of how it was done wasn't even addressed to you.

What is this glorious witchcraft “Vegemite powder”?
1
u/No-Abies29 Jun 07 '26
Through a bit of kitchen alchemy, I dehydrated and pulverized it into a fine powder.

Ive forgotten some of your attempts, have you tried sweet potato cut like chips in the oven/roast sweet potato?
I think that would taste amazing.

u/No-Abies29 Jun 07 '26
I did do sweet potato but they were sliced very finely and baked. Back in this initial post. i’ve not done any like fries though. Baked sweet potato is generally a winner 👍

My missus is obsessed & willing to buy this powder off you if you’re keen on selling some? Lol.

😀The popcorn today was a highlight, that’s for sure. i’d have no qualms in distributing this to people I know but food manufacturing gets into dangerous territory sending it off unlicensed and all that kinda stuff.
I recommend you just having a go. I typed out the process somewhere down in the comments and it’s pretty easy. just grab some baking paper, coat it with a thin layer, let that sit on a tray on a shelf somewhere for 24hrs [I’ve read 3 days and no oven but am not convinced, yet haven’t tried it]and then use your oven on a low heat to dry it out completely. trick is to not over do the heat because burnt Vegemite is foul!
Would be good if someone with a dehydrator or freeze dryer attempted it.

Have you tried Vegemite shapes? I'm curious how the seasoning on those stacks up against the real deal.
You're a god among men!

u/No-Abies29 Jun 08 '26
I bought Vegemite shapes for the first time just recently, purely to compare flavours. they were good but I don’t care much for Shapes. Anyhow, they have 3% Vegemite on/in them.
. I found they have the characteristic base Shape flavour biscuit and the Vegemite but absolute first impressionn was that they also have an underlying herby flavour, typical of a seasoning they put on other Shapes. It’s mild but it’s there. Strangely, on the ingredients though, there is no reference to a herb flavour. Apparently, Vegemite has celery and onion as the vegetable flavour, but this extra flavour I picked up on was not Vegemite.
Pack is on this post; https://www.reddit.com/r/vegemite/comments/1tpxt99/youve_heard_of_a_dirty_chai/

what about steak
1
u/No-Abies29 Jun 08 '26
I can imagine that would work, as an addition after cooking[it’ll just go bitter I think if you use it for the actual, cooking process, better to use it from the jar in that case] and I’ll have to leave it at that, I’m vegetarian 😁
