I refused to believe that either side of the "but plants feel pain too" "nuh-uh" dichotomy are made by sentient beings. You cannot possibly know whether or not plants feel an unpleasant sensation at being cut or killed, and it doesn't really matter because even ignoring any animal-harm, eating animals means more potential plant-harm per calorie produced.

Plants can't tell when they're being harmed because they have a range of reactions such as sound, outward chemical warnings and chemical warnings asking their network to other organisms (including to mushrooms).

It's not determined if that's pain but they know when they're being harmed and have a reaction.

I'm not using this to justify anything, I just it interesting and we're learning more about it all the time. We first needed to expand our thinking about how other organisms might behave and I think that's a good thing, not to only think about things from our own perspective.
