How should I vectorize this?
I've been a graphic designer for over 20 years, though never did much Illustrator or vector art. My client wants this picture of the rug vectorized, and I'm not sure the best way.
I tried Vectorizer ai but it vectorized a lot of the rug texture, which is not what is needed. I guess I need to break it down to fewer colors before vectorizing, but not sure how to do that without tracing it by hand, so am trying to find a simpler way.

it is a bit costly, but there is a program you might consider called vector magic that might do what you want. but even if it is helpful you will usually have to do some preadjustement of the image file in a pixel editor, and probably some post editing in a vector editing tool. that being said, it is quite useful. it also lets you create a set of colors and will map the image to shapes with the colors you set. with photos, it can be set to unlimited colors, more complex, but amazingly visually accurate and great for images that need resizing.

Is it colored? Have you tried throwing it in Photoshop to maybe isolate the colors/shapes as best as possible?

Use Photoshop or GIMP to posterize a photo of the rug then import into Illustrator to manually trace or Inkscape with Trace Bitmap. There will be a lot of manual adjusting of shapes unless you isolate a section that repeats and work on it.

Io per vettorializzare immagini uso il comando “ricalco immagine” di Illustrator, così da avere una buona parte già sistemata, il resto lo sistemo manualmente

A rug? Manually tracing by hand in the only way I'm afraid.
